There is no reliable lawful trick to erase an import charge that applies to your order. To avoid a surprise bill, check where each item ships from, review the destination-specific tax and import-charge lines before confirming payment, and compare the full delivered price with local alternatives. The answer depends on the country receiving the parcel: EU rules changed on 1 July 2026, while Great Britain uses different thresholds and collection rules.
What to check before placing a Temu order
- Confirm the delivery country and item shipping origin. Marketplace inventory can vary, and an item shipped from outside your destination market may trigger import rules that do not apply to locally stocked goods.
- Review the checkout total and breakdown. Look for separately shown tax, duty, import-fee, or delivery lines before you confirm payment. Save the order summary so you can compare it with any later carrier bill.
- Compare the landed price. Add the listed price and all displayed charges, then compare that total with a similar product stocked within your destination country.
Temu’s Spain Terms of Use say applicable taxes, duties, fees, and shipping are shown before order confirmation and that no additional payment will be required after checkout. The terms also say import charges may apply when an item ships from outside the EU. This is the Spain version of Temu’s terms, not a guarantee for every destination, seller, or delivery circumstance: Temu Spain Terms of Use, sections 13.1–13.2.
If your order is delivered to the EU
Customs duty changed on 1 July 2026
The EU ended the customs-duty exemption for qualifying low-value distance-sale imports on 1 July 2026. A temporary €3 customs duty per item applies to qualifying goods in consignments valued at no more than €150. This is not a universal €3 charge per parcel: the Commission describes it as a per-item duty, subject to the rule’s scope and conditions. This customs duty is distinct from VAT, a carrier’s own service charge, and the EU’s planned Union handling fee. They are separate charges with different bases and calculations; do not assume that one line in a checkout total represents all of them.

A separate handling fee is planned
The European Commission says an EU Union handling fee for small parcels is to begin by 1 November 2026. The amount was not yet set in the cited guidance, so there is no established figure to add to an order total here. Check the Commission’s customs reform update for the current status.
Why splitting or misdeclaring parcels is not a solution
Do not split a basket, undervalue goods, or misstate a parcel’s origin as a way to avoid duty. The Commission identifies undervaluation and parcel splitting among the practices the reform addresses. These are not dependable or appropriate fee-avoidance tactics.

For context, the Commission reported that 5.9 billion low-value e-commerce items were imported into the EU in 2025, four times the 2022 volume. That is an EU-wide figure, not a count of Temu shipments: European Commission, EU Customs Reform.

Great Britain’s rules are different from the EU’s. Under current UK government guidance, VAT applies to goods sent from abroad. For a consumer purchase of non-excise goods worth £135 or less, the seller includes VAT in the amount paid. Above £135, VAT may be collected by the carrier; customs duty depends on the product and its origin. Excise goods follow separate rules. Read the UK Government’s tax and customs guidance for goods sent from abroad rather than applying the EU’s €150 rule to a UK delivery.

What to do if a carrier asks you to pay
- Ask for an itemized bill. UK government guidance says the carrier will itemize charges due. Check what is listed and whether it is VAT, customs duty, or a carrier charge.
- Compare it with your order records. Review the saved checkout breakdown, delivery destination, product details, and any stated shipping origin.
- Use the relevant correction or refund route. GOV.UK explains how to request a VAT or duty refund for returned goods or overcharges. Follow the applicable carrier or official process described in its tax and duty guidance.
