First find out whether your account is closed, temporarily restricted, or affected only by a hold on one deposit. The right next step depends on which situation applies. Contact the bank through a trusted channel, ask what is blocked and why, protect incoming deposits and essential payments, and keep a record of every notice and conversation.
What to do first
- Contact the bank securely. Use the phone number on the back of your card, the bank’s official app or website, a secure message, or a branch. Do not rely on a number in an unexpected text, email, or social-media message; the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) warns that impostors may pose as official contacts. Never post account numbers or identity documents publicly.
- Ask exactly what happened. Is the account closed, temporarily restricted for an identity or fraud review, or is a particular deposit on hold? Ask the reason, which transactions or services are affected, how much money is currently available, what documents the bank needs, whether pending payments or deposits will be processed or returned, when the next review will occur, and how any remaining balance will be returned. Request the information in writing and note the representative’s name, date, time, and case number.
- Protect essential payments. List payroll and benefit deposits, rent, utilities, checks, automatic debits, and other time-sensitive payments. Contact employers, benefit providers, billers, and anyone who may send or cash a payment to arrange another destination or payment method. Ask the bank what will happen to each pending item. The CFPB cautions that returned checks, fees, and automatic payments can create additional costs and complications when an account closes.
- Keep evidence and act promptly on unauthorized transactions. Save statements, closure or hold notices, screenshots, deposit receipts, and correspondence. If you see a transfer you did not authorize, report it to the bank as soon as possible and follow its written dispute procedure. CFPB guidance says the bank generally has ten business days after notice to investigate an unauthorized electronic-transfer report. Consumer liability under Regulation E depends on the type of transfer and how promptly you notify the bank, so do not assume one liability limit applies to every case.
How to tell a closure from a freeze or deposit hold
These situations can look similar when a card stops working or an online balance becomes unavailable, but they are not interchangeable. A closure ends the account relationship; a restriction may block access while the account remains open; and a deposit hold delays access to specified funds. A bank outage can also temporarily prevent access without either a closure or a freeze. Ask the bank which status applies before deciding what to do next.
If the bank closed your account
Can a bank close a checking account without your permission?
Yes. The CFPB says a bank or credit union can close a checking account without the customer’s permission. Its examples include writing bad checks, not having enough money to cover fees, and leaving an account dormant for a long time. Whether advance notice is required can depend on state law, so do not assume the bank always must warn you first—or that it never has to.
Get the closure details and settle the balance
Ask for the effective closure date, a final statement and transaction history, an itemized explanation of fees or any negative balance, and instructions for receiving any money left in the account. If a transaction or fee is wrong, dispute it with the bank in writing and retain proof that you sent the dispute. If the account has a negative balance, ask how to resolve it and whether the bank has reported it to a checking-account reporting company.

Do not treat guidance about a customer-requested closure as a rule for every bank-initiated closure. The CFPB advises consumers who close accounts themselves to check for pending checks, fees, and automatic payments; returned items can lead to fees and may make it harder to open an account elsewhere. Its guidance also says state law generally requires an institution to close an account within a reasonable time after the customer asks to close it. That is a different situation from a bank deciding to close an account.
If the bank reopens an account you had already closed
If you had already closed the account yourself and the bank later reopens it to process a debit or deposit, save proof of the original closure and any later activity. In Circular 2023-02, the CFPB says reopening an account in those circumstances can be an unfair practice under the Consumer Financial Protection Act. Raise the issue through the bank’s complaint process and, if needed, submit a complaint to the CFPB.
If the bank froze access or is holding a deposit
When only one deposit is on hold
Ask whether the restriction applies to the whole account or only to a particular deposit. Deposit-availability rules depend on the kind of deposit, when and how it was made, and the bank’s policies. CFPB guidance last reviewed August 28, 2026, says cash deposited in person, certain smaller checks deposited in person, electronic payments, and specified official checks generally must be available by the next business day. It also describes circumstances that may allow a longer hold, including a new account, repeated overdrafts, suspected fraud, an emergency, or a large check.
Ask which rule the bank is applying to your deposit and the specific date the funds should be available. The ordinary deposit timetable does not establish when a bank must lift a broader account restriction.

Use a verified bank channel to ask what identity or transaction documents are required, how to submit them securely, and when the bank expects to review the case. Get a case number and keep copies of anything you send. A bank may not disclose every detail of an investigation, and there is no universal deadline established here for releasing funds during a fraud-related freeze. Avoid relying on a promised timetable unless the bank confirms it for your case.

When an electronic transfer was unauthorized
Notify the bank as soon as you discover the transfer and follow up in writing if the bank requests it. The CFPB says the bank generally has ten business days after you give notice to investigate. Regulation E’s liability rules vary with the circumstances, including whether an access device was involved and when you reported the transfer; the ten-business-day investigation period does not mean every case must be resolved or funds released by then.
If a court order, garnishment, or levy caused the restriction
A legal restraint is different from a bank’s own fraud or identity review. Ask the bank for the issuing court or agency, order or case number, date it received the order, amount restrained, creditor identity, any response deadline, and instructions for claiming an exemption. The type of order and state procedure determine how to challenge it; do not assume a universal form, deadline, or outcome.
Federal rules provide an additional safeguard for qualifying federal benefits paid by direct deposit. The financial institution must review the account and protect qualifying benefit payments deposited during the preceding two months. The FDIC’s compliance materials describe notices that identify the protected amount and explain that an account holder may assert further exemptions through the applicable local process. For funds beyond the automatically protected amount, contact the court, creditor, legal aid organization, or a lawyer promptly. State procedures still matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill a closed checking account hurt your credit?
A checking-account closure by itself usually does not appear on the three major traditional credit reports. That does not mean a closure can never affect your financial record: specialty checking-account reporting companies collect banking history, and an unpaid negative balance or suspected fraud may be reported to them. If a debt is sent to collections, it may also affect traditional credit reports.
If another bank denies your application based on a report, its adverse-action notice should name the reporting company. Request a free copy of that report, check it for errors, and dispute inaccuracies with both the reporting company and the bank or other business that supplied the information. The CFPB says most negative information on checking-account reports cannot be included after seven years, subject to the governing rules.

How to escalate an unresolved problem
Start with the bank’s formal complaint channel. State what happened, what you want the bank to do, and the relevant dates; attach copies rather than originals and keep the case number and response. If the problem remains unresolved, the CFPB accepts complaints about checking and savings accounts and other banking services. A complaint can prompt a response, but it does not guarantee that access will be restored or money returned.
The institution’s regulator depends on its charter. For an unresolved issue involving a national bank, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) identifies its Customer Assistance Group as a possible next contact. A credit union or state-chartered bank may have a different regulator, so identify the institution’s charter or regulator rather than assuming the OCC supervises it.

If you need another checking account
If you cannot open an ordinary account, a second-chance checking account may be an option. These accounts are generally designed for people with banking-history problems and may offer reduced services or fees; eligibility and terms vary by institution. Before applying, compare:
- Monthly and transaction fees, plus the minimum opening deposit.
- Eligibility rules and how the institution treats a prior negative balance.
- Overdraft policy and access to branches or ATMs.
- Direct-deposit availability, check-writing, and bill-pay features.
- Whether the institution reports account activity to specialty checking-account reporting companies.
Confirm current terms directly with the provider. If a report caused an earlier denial, correcting an error in that report may also matter when you apply elsewhere.
