How to search an address in OFAC’s list

Paste the complete wallet address into the ID # field and run the search. OFAC FAQ 594 says to search the address hash in that field; address queries use exact matching, not fuzzy logic. Read FAQ 594.

If a result appears, open and review the record. Check that the address string and currency identifier match, then read the associated entity and sanctions program information. OFAC’s search page explains that program codes indicate how a true hit should be treated.

If there is no result, record only that the address did not return an exact match in the official search at that time. Do not describe it as “clean,” “safe,” or “not sanctioned” based on that search alone.

What an address match does—and does not—tell you
An address is an identifier, not an entire wallet or identity
OFAC defines a digital currency address as an alphanumeric identifier that represents a potential destination for a transfer and is associated with a wallet. A match concerns the listed identifier; it does not, by itself, establish every person who owns or controls the wallet, or the full context of a transaction.
Exact matching means exact matching
For digital currency addresses, the ID # field does not return near matches, partial matches, or fuzzy matches. OFAC FAQ 246 describes fuzzy logic as a feature of name searches; other fields use character matching. A typo or a different address will not be surfaced as a similar address. See FAQ 246.

No result is not an all-clear
OFAC states that its digital currency address listings “are not likely to be exhaustive.” An unlisted address could still present sanctions concerns through ownership, control, indirect exposure, or other facts not captured by a direct address lookup. A search result also cannot determine whether a particular transaction is legally permissible.
How to interpret a possible result
Do not rely on a search label alone. Compare the full address and currency identifier shown in the record, and examine the listed entity and program details. Currency labels may appear in forms such as “Digital Currency Address – XBT” or “Digital Currency Address – ETH.” OFAC’s FAQ lists several currency examples, but those examples do not establish current coverage of every blockchain or token.

OFAC cautions that Sanctions List Search is one tool for using its lists, not a substitute for appropriate due diligence. If a possible hit could affect a payment or other activity, pause and assess it under the facts and applicable rules rather than treating the search result as a complete legal determination. For U.S. persons, OFAC says that when they determine they hold virtual currency required to be blocked, they must deny all parties access and meet requirements for holding and reporting blocked assets. OFAC FAQ 562 addresses virtual currency, and OFAC’s blocked-property guidance provides further information.
One-time lookup versus ongoing screening

OFAC makes its SDN List and other sanctions lists available for download in multiple formats, which can support broader screening. The appropriate process depends on the activity and risk; a downloaded list or automated match is not, by itself, a complete compliance program. OFAC’s Sanctions List Service provides access to list resources, while OFAC’s virtual currency industry guidance discusses customer, transaction, and ongoing screening.

Check the live list and understand the scope
Sanctions lists can change, so a saved result or old screenshot is only evidence of what the search returned at that moment. Check the live OFAC search page when screening. Its update dates change over time; the dates displayed on the live page are more useful than a date copied into an older article.
This method covers OFAC, the U.S. Treasury sanctions authority. It does not establish the rules or official lookup process for another country or jurisdiction. The consequences of a match depend on the people, property, activity, and applicable requirements, so do not infer transaction permission or a legal conclusion from a simple address search.
