The reported case involved a demand for about 20 bitcoin—worth approximately $750,000 at the time in November 2023—and planned administrator-account changes and server shutdowns. The available account describes sabotage and extortion, but does not establish that files were encrypted.
What happened in the case
CTRLALTNOD reported on October 6, 2026, that Judge Michael A. Shipp imposed Rhyne’s sentence on September 28. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for New Jersey announced the sentence on October 5, according to the report. It says Rhyne pleaded guilty on April 1, 2026, to extortion involving a threat to damage a protected computer and intentional damage to a protected computer.
The employer is described as an industrial company headquartered in New Jersey. The court-material designation cited in the report is “Victim-1”; the company is not named.
How the reported scheme worked
The report says Rhyne used unauthorized remote desktop sessions and scheduled tasks in November 2023. The tasks were intended to remove administrator accounts, change passwords, and shut down servers. On November 25, he reportedly demanded about 20 bitcoin and threatened further server shutdowns.

The roughly $750,000 figure is the report’s estimate of the bitcoin demand’s value at the time, not a current conversion or an amount reported as paid.

These figures describe the complaint’s account of intended scope. They do not establish that every listed server and workstation was simultaneously unusable.
Was this a file-encrypting ransomware attack?
The reported facts support describing the case as an insider extortion attempt involving privileged-account changes and threatened network disruption. They do not establish that file encryption was used. A bitcoin demand by itself is not evidence that files were encrypted, so calling this a confirmed encrypting ransomware attack would go beyond the reported facts.

Were the company’s backups confirmed deleted?
The report says the extortion email claimed backups had been deleted. That statement is a claim made in the message, not independent forensic proof that every backup was deleted. The available account does not establish the full status of the company’s backups.
