In Upstox’s comparison updated October 5, 2026, Suryoday Small Finance Bank has the highest listed 5-year senior-citizen FD rate among the banks shown here, at 8.50%; Jana Small Finance Bank leads the listed 3-year rates, at 8.30%. These are secondary-source figures, not a complete audit of banks’ live rate tables. Check the bank’s own rate schedule and exact maturity bucket before booking.

3-year and 5-year senior FD rates compared

The rates below are annual percentages reported by Upstox News Desk in its October 5, 2026 comparison. The comparison is a dated snapshot; verify the rate and eligibility directly with the bank on the deposit acceptance or value date.

Bank category Bank 3-year senior rate 5-year senior rate Source and qualification
Small finance bank Suryoday Small Finance Bank 7.40% 8.50% Upstox News Desk comparison, updated October 5, 2026; secondary-source figures.
Small finance bank Jana Small Finance Bank 8.30% 7.77% Upstox News Desk comparison, updated October 5, 2026; secondary-source figures.
Public-sector bank Bank of India 7.45% 6.75% Upstox News Desk comparison, updated October 5, 2026; secondary-source figures.
Private bank HDFC Bank 6.95% 6.90% Upstox News Desk comparison, updated October 5, 2026; HDFC’s official schedule has distinct maturity buckets.

Among these listed choices, the highest 3-year figure is Jana Small Finance Bank’s 8.30%, while the highest 5-year figure is Suryoday Small Finance Bank’s 8.50%. Upstox reported 8.50% as the highest rate in its 26-bank comparison for select senior-citizen tenures; that maximum is not necessarily available for every bank or for a 3- or 5-year deposit.

What official bank schedules show about exact tenure

A headline “3-year” or “5-year” comparison can conceal different maturity bands. Official examples available for this comparison illustrate why the precise tenure matters:

Bank and deposit scope Official 3-year bucket Official 5-year bucket Effective date and qualification
Central Bank of India; deposits below ₹3 crore 6.50% for 3 years to under 5 years 6.50% for 5 years to 10 years Official rate page, effective August 10, 2026; senior-citizen rates.
Punjab National Bank; domestic deposits below ₹3 crore 6.80% for over 2 years to 3 years 6.85% for 1,205 days to 5 years Official rate page, effective June 1, 2026; PNB lists separate 1,204-day and over-5-year buckets.
HDFC Bank; resident senior-citizen deposits below ₹3 crore 6.95% through 3 years 6.90% for 4 years 7 months 1 day through 5 years Official schedule effective August 19, 2026. It lists 7.10% for 3 years 1 day to below 4 years 7 months, and 6.65% for 5 years 1 day to 10 years.

These official examples do not replace the October 5 Upstox comparison: they are bank-published rates with their own effective dates and buckets. In particular, HDFC’s 3-year rate is not the rate for the longer 3-year-1-day bucket, and its 5-year bucket does not include deposits of 5 years 1 day or more. PNB’s 5-year bucket begins at 1,205 days, so a deposit with a nearby term can fall into a different rate band.

How to choose a rate that fits your deposit

Match the maturity, not just the advertised maximum

Compare the actual date your deposit will mature against the bank’s stated band. Special-duration deposits can carry a different rate from a standard 3- or 5-year FD. Ask the bank to confirm the applicable band for the precise number of days or maturity date before placing the deposit.

Check senior-citizen eligibility and deposit type

Eligibility is not identical across banks or account types. HDFC says its senior-citizen rates do not apply to NRIs. PNB distinguishes senior citizens aged 60 to under 80 from super-senior depositors aged 80 and above, and says its additional domestic senior rate does not apply to NRO deposits. Confirm your age category, resident status, and deposit type against the bank’s current terms.

Weigh interest against access to the money

A higher quoted rate alone does not establish that an FD is the better choice. Before booking, check whether the deposit is callable or non-callable, what premature-withdrawal rules apply, and whether you need periodic interest payouts or a cumulative deposit that reinvests interest. Those terms are bank- and product-specific and are not established by the rate comparison above.

Consider deposit insurance across your balances

The DICGC FAQ states a maximum insurance cover of ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including principal and interest held in the same right and capacity, subject to the scheme’s terms. It does not mean the full amount of a larger FD is insured. Account for your other deposits at the same bank when assessing how much falls within that limit.

What the RBI repo rate means for FD rates

The Reserve Bank of India’s current-rates page showed a policy repo rate of 5.50% at 1 p.m. on October 7, 2026. A repo-rate move does not automatically produce an equal or immediate change in a bank’s FD rates. Upstox’s October 7 comparison also notes that the repo hike does not translate mechanically into the same-sized FD-rate increase. Do not assume a bank will raise rates, or predict when it might do so, without a published bank update.

For a new deposit or renewal, use the rate schedule applicable when the bank accepts the deposit, rather than relying on an older comparison or the repo-rate announcement alone.
