What Does $100K in a Jumbo CD Actually Earn?

At the FDIC’s March 2026 benchmark of 1.52% for a 12-month CD, $100,000 would earn about $1,520 in a year if the APY applied throughout and interest stayed deposited. Actual jumbo CD earnings depend on the offer and its terms.

At 1.52% APY, $100,000 would earn about $1,520 over one year if that APY applies for the full year and the interest stays in the CD. That rate is a dated benchmark, not a verified current jumbo offer: the FDIC’s national rate table listed 1.52% for a 12-month CD as of March 16, 2026. Your actual return depends on the CD’s APY, term, and interest and withdrawal rules.

How much interest will $100,000 earn in a jumbo CD?

There is no fixed return for a $100,000 jumbo CD. The jumbo label does not specify the interest rate; use the APY and term in the specific institution’s offer.

For a one-year illustration, multiplying $100,000 by the FDIC’s 1.52% national rate for a 12-month CD gives approximately $1,520 in interest. If the interest remains deposited, the balance would be about $101,520 at the end of the year, before any applicable taxes. This assumes the APY applies for the full year. The FDIC table was last updated March 16, 2026, so this figure is a dated benchmark, not an October 2026 market quote or a promise of what a bank will pay. FDIC national rates

Why the APY and term matter

APY is the annual yield, including the effect of compounding. A quoted APY can help compare accounts, but it does not by itself tell you the maturity value of every CD: check the actual term, maturity date, and rules for crediting or withdrawing interest. Do not simply extend a one-year estimate across a longer or shorter term.

For a precise estimate, use the APY and maturity date in the offer and confirm whether interest stays in the CD or is paid out. For example, CIBC Bank USA’s jumbo CD disclosure says its quoted APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity and that fees or withdrawing interest reduce earnings. Its displayed terms were stated as accurate December 23, 2025, and may have changed since then; they should not be treated as verified current terms. CIBC Bank USA jumbo CD terms

What to compare before opening a jumbo CD

Compare the full offer, not just the account label or headline APY. These terms can change both the amount you earn and your access to the money:

  • APY and term: Check the rate for the exact term you want and the date the offer applies.
  • Minimum balance: Requirements vary by institution. CIBC Bank USA’s December 23, 2025 disclosure, for example, set a $100,000 minimum to open and earn its jumbo CD APY; that is one provider’s requirement, not a universal definition of “jumbo.” CIBC Bank USA jumbo CD terms
  • Interest handling: Find out how often interest is credited and whether it remains in the CD. Taking interest out can lower total earnings.
  • Early withdrawal: Check the penalty before committing. CIBC’s cited disclosure says a penalty may apply to early withdrawal; the amount and rules depend on the product terms.
  • Maturity and renewal: Read what happens when the term ends. CIBC’s cited disclosure describes automatic renewal and says the renewal rate is the rate offered on the maturity date for new CDs with the same term and features. Confirm the current terms with the institution before relying on that treatment.
  • Eligibility and availability: Verify that the offer is available to you and that you meet its requirements; rates and conditions are institution-specific.

Does a $100,000 jumbo CD fit within FDIC insurance?

The standard FDIC insurance limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. Coverage includes principal and accrued interest through the date an insured bank closes. The FDIC combines deposits held in the same ownership category at the same bank, so count your other deposits there too; a $100,000 CD may not be your only balance subject to the limit.
