The $1,000 Anthropologie rock was a joke, not a real product. TikTok creator Phoebe Adams started the gag with a rock she found outside; the retailer later joined in with staged displays and social posts. The story caught on because it played on a familiar question about taste and spending: “Would you pay for this?”
Where the Anthropologie rock joke started
On September 14, 2025, Phoebe Adams posted a TikTok showing a rock she had found outside and pretended it was a new Anthropologie purchase. She told her boyfriend it had cost $150 on sale. The Daily Dot reported that Adams’ original clip had more than 11.8 million views as of its September 25, 2025 report; that is a dated platform snapshot, not a current view count. The Daily Dot’s report documented the setup and its early spread.
The $1,000 figure belongs to mock display content, not an Anthropologie product listing. Coverage describes the rock as a prank and the in-store tags as part of the staged joke—not as evidence that the retailer sold that particular stone.
Why the price seemed plausible
The gag borrowed credibility from Anthropologie’s real decorative-home assortment. The retailer has sold stone-related decor, including geode bookends and petrified wood slabs, as well as sculptures. That history made an absurdly expensive pebble feel just believable enough to invite a second look, but it does not turn the viral rock or its mock price tag into merchandise. FindArticles’ October 25, 2025 analysis discusses that context and distinguishes the prank from an actual corporate listing.

That tension is also what made the audience prompt—“Would you pay for this?”—work. It turns a found object into a quick debate about whether price reflects material, craftsmanship, design, or simply the story attached to an object. The question appeared in commentary; it was not a measured survey of shoppers.
How Anthropologie joined the bit
After the prank spread, Anthropologie commented on Adams’ videos, helped stage a mock in-store rock display, and posted its own fake-sale video, according to The Daily Dot. Vogue later reported that the company’s team made CEO Tricia Smith a palm-sized mock rock marked $1,000 for her desk.

In an October 29, 2025 interview with Vogue, Smith said: “You have to make light of yourself as a brand — I think younger generations want to see brands participate with an authentic voice.” She also said: “No one can expect or anticipate it, so how do you respond when something like the rock comes up?” Her comments describe the brand’s choice to join the joke, not a launch of a rock collection. Vogue’s interview with Smith includes the remarks and desk-rock anecdote.

Viral attention is not, on its own, proof of any of those business outcomes.

The viral rock was fake merchandise; Anthropologie’s participation in the joke was real. The episode works as a small lesson in how easily a price tag can become the story around an object—and why it helps to check whether a viral “product” is actually listed for sale before treating the joke as a shopping opportunity.
