Sherwin-Williams has a long record of cash generation and shareholder distributions, and its second-quarter 2026 results and outlook improved. At the same time, management described demand as soft, while input-cost inflation and higher financing costs remain concerns. The materials available as of October 7, 2026 do not establish whether the shares are attractively valued: they do not provide a current share price or a comparable valuation benchmark.
What makes Sherwin-Williams a potential long-term investment?
Sherwin-Williams develops, manufactures, distributes and sells paints, coatings and related products to professional, industrial, commercial and retail customers. Its three reportable groups are Paint Stores, Consumer Brands and Performance Coatings. Sherwin-Williams-branded products are sold through company-operated stores and facilities; other brands reach customers through mass merchandisers, home centers, independent paint dealers, hardware stores, automotive retailers and industrial distributors. The company says its Performance Coatings business serves construction, industrial, packaging and transportation markets in more than 120 countries. Its operations span North and South America as well as the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Australia. The 2025 Form 10-K and company investor overview describe the business and its reach.
The investment case rests partly on scale, a broad customer and end-market base, and the ability to generate cash across different conditions. Sherwin-Williams’ own investor presentation reports the following historical figures. They describe past performance through December 31, 2025; they are company-selected metrics, not independent forecasts or guarantees of future returns.
| Company-reported historical metric | Period and qualification |
|---|---|
| 6.9% adjusted EPS compound annual growth rate | Five years through December 31, 2025; Sherwin-Williams figure |
| 5.6% average same-store sales growth | Five years through December 31, 2025; Sherwin-Williams figure |
| $14.3 billion net operating cash | Five years through December 31, 2025; Sherwin-Williams figure |
| 47 consecutive years of dividend increases | Through December 31, 2025; Sherwin-Williams figure |
| 15.18% average annual shareholder return | Ten years through December 31, 2025; Sherwin-Williams figure |
Those figures are useful context, but they should not be read as a forecast of returns from buying the stock today. Historical shareholder return, in particular, does not tell an investor what return to expect at a different purchase price.

What do the latest results say about the business?
The 2025 full-year results and the quarter ended June 30, 2026 show a mix of sales growth, cash generation and stronger recent earnings. The periods are not interchangeable: fiscal-year results cover twelve months, while the Q2 figures cover one quarter. Q2 consolidated growth also includes Suvinil, acquired in October 2025, so it should not be treated as entirely organic.
| Measure | Fiscal 2025 | Quarter ended June 30, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Consolidated net sales | $23.57 billion, up 2.1% | $6.79 billion, up 7.5% |
| Diluted EPS (GAAP) | $10.26, down 2.7% | $3.43, up 14.3% |
| Adjusted diluted EPS | $11.43, up 0.9% | $3.70, up 9.5% |
| Paint Stores same-store sales | Up 1.7% for stores open more than twelve months, full year | Up 4.2% |
| Net operating cash | $3.45 billion, or 14.6% of net sales | Not stated in the Q2 release |
| Net income | Not stated here as a comparable annual measure | $843.6 million |
| EBITDA | Not stated here as a comparable annual measure | $1.43 billion, up 13.8% |
Fiscal 2025 therefore was not a uniform growth year: sales and operating cash increased, reported diluted EPS fell, and adjusted diluted EPS edged higher. Q2 2026 was stronger on sales and both EPS measures, but the company attributed improvement in part to growth investments, new account wins and a larger share of customer spending, and the acquired Suvinil business affected the year-over-year comparison. Management also said raw-material inflation pressured gross margin. The company’s releases provide the full period details: fiscal 2025 results and Q2 2026 results.
Keep GAAP and adjusted EPS separate when judging progress. Adjusted earnings can help isolate certain items, but the GAAP figure remains relevant to the earnings actually reported under accounting rules. Acquisition-related amortization and restructuring charges are among the adjustments identified in the company’s 2026 guidance.
What is management forecasting for 2026?
In its July 28, 2026 Q2 release, Sherwin-Williams raised its full-year outlook. The figures below are management guidance, not realized results, and may change:

| Adjusted diluted EPS | $11.80–$12.20 |
| GAAP diluted EPS | $10.92–$11.32, including stated acquisition-related amortization and restructuring expenses |
This July outlook superseded the company’s January 2026 guidance. Management’s Q2 release said customer sentiment and leading indicators pointed to continued demand softness in the second half, with no meaningful improvement in demand. Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer Heidi G. Petz said, “Sherwin-Williams delivered strong second quarter results and continued to outperform the market despite ongoing global uncertainty and no meaningful improvement in demand.” The Q2 release gives the outlook and management’s statement.

The same release described broad-based cost inflation across raw materials, energy, logistics and packaging, and pricing actions in response. It announced an 8% Paint Stores Group price increase effective September 1, 2026, and said Q2 restructuring actions were expected to generate approximately $17 million in annual savings. These are actions and expectations, not proof that pricing will fully offset costs, that customers will accept higher prices without volume effects, or that the expected savings will be achieved.
How much cash is being returned to shareholders?
| Period | Company-reported capital returned | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $2.4 billion | Share repurchases and dividends, reported by Sherwin-Williams |
| First six months of 2026, through June 30 | $2.23 billion | Share repurchases and dividends, reported by Sherwin-Williams |
These amounts show recent distributions, not a promise about future dividends or buybacks. For a long-term investor, the relevant question is whether distributions remain supported by cash generation after the company funds operations, capital needs and debt obligations. The figures are reported in the 2025 results and Q2 2026 results.

Demand and end-market exposure
Paint and coatings demand is tied to a range of customers and end markets, so a broad business portfolio does not eliminate cyclical weakness or guarantee that all segments grow together. Management’s Q2 commentary pointed to continued softness and no meaningful improvement. The key question is whether organic demand can strengthen, or whether sales growth depends increasingly on acquisitions and price increases.
Input costs, pricing and margins
Raw materials, energy, logistics and packaging costs can move faster than selling prices. The company specifically reported raw-material inflation pressure on gross margin in Q2 2026. Pricing actions may help recover costs, but the outcome depends on timing, customer response and volumes; investors should watch reported margins and volume rather than assume a price increase translates directly into higher profit.
Interest expense, debt and capital needs
The 2025 annual report forecast interest expense to rise by approximately $85 million in 2026, citing refinanced maturities, borrowing related to Suvinil, new headquarters and research facilities, and higher refinancing rates. That was a forecast in the annual report, not necessarily the current exact estimate. The Q2 2026 release later noted additional interest expense attributable to increased short-term borrowings and long-term debt. Together, these disclosures make borrowing levels and cash available after interest important measures to follow. See the 2025 Form 10-K and Q2 2026 release.
Acquisition integration and comparability
Suvinil’s inclusion in year-over-year results means consolidated growth is not a clean measure of underlying demand. Investors need to assess whether the acquisition contributes sustainable, profitable growth and how acquisition-related costs affect reported earnings and cash needs.
Broader business and market risks
The 2025 Form 10-K identifies risks including macroeconomic conditions, inflation and interest rates, tariffs, supply-chain disruption, raw-material availability and foreign-currency fluctuations. Performance can also differ across the company’s geographic areas and customer markets. This is a summary, not a complete list; consult the filing’s full risk-factor discussion before relying on it as a comprehensive account.

Which metrics should a long-term investor monitor?
Use a group of measures rather than treating one quarterly EPS result as a complete verdict. Read them consistently across periods and distinguish reported results from management guidance.
- Organic demand: Track Paint Stores same-store sales alongside sales volume and price/mix. Separate underlying growth from acquisition and currency effects where the company reports them.
- Segment health: Compare sales, profit and margins in Paint Stores, Consumer Brands and Performance Coatings. Look for whether strength is broad-based and whether input-cost inflation is being passed through.
- Earnings quality: Review GAAP EPS beside adjusted EPS and note acquisition amortization, restructuring charges and other stated adjustments rather than treating the adjusted figure as a replacement for reported earnings.
- Cash and funding: Follow operating cash flow, capital expenditures, dividends, repurchases and changes in debt or borrowing. Compare distributions with cash generation and financing needs.
- Acquisition results: Watch whether Suvinil contributes profitable, durable growth and how integration affects margins, cash and reported earnings.
- Valuation: Pair a dated share price with a clearly defined valuation measure, such as trailing or forward price-to-earnings using consistently defined earnings. Compare the price paid with growth prospects, risks and suitable peers. The company sources cited here do not establish a contemporaneous share price or valuation benchmark, so they cannot support a conclusion that the stock is cheap or expensive.
As of October 7, 2026, the latest reported quarter in the cited company materials was the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Sherwin-Williams had announced that it would report Q3 2026 on October 27, so Q3 results were not yet available at that date. The next reported period can help test whether demand, pricing, margins and cash trends are developing as management expects.
