To order medicines online safely in India, confirm which pharmacy will dispense the order, follow prescription rules, and check the medicine and paperwork when it arrives. For prescription medicines, the Drugs Rules require a registered medical practitioner’s prescription; the Ministry of Health says they must be supplied from licensed premises under a registered pharmacist’s personal supervision.
How to check an online pharmacy before ordering
Start by identifying the actual dispensing pharmacy—not just the app, website, or marketplace through which you place the order. Ask customer support for the pharmacy’s name and relevant licence details if they are not clearly shown. Medicine-sale licences are granted and monitored by State Licensing Authorities, according to the Ministry of Health. The sources available here do not establish a live national consumer lookup that validates each online order.
- Check who dispenses the order: The seller should identify the pharmacy responsible for supplying the medicine and explain how to contact it.
- Look for pharmacist support: Check whether you can ask a pharmacist about the prescription or medicine. A 2017 CDSCO-hosted committee report recommended pharmacist prescription verification and access to clarification as part of a proposed retail model; that recommendation does not establish that every current service provides those protections.
- Watch for warning signs: Treat a hidden seller identity, an unclear dispensing pharmacy, or an offer to supply prescription medicines without the required prescription as reasons not to proceed.
The Ministry’s 2025 parliamentary answer says State Licensing Authorities grant licences for medicine sale and distribution and may act when licence conditions are violated. It does not mean that seeing a marketplace listing alone verifies the pharmacy or the particular order.
Can you buy prescription medicines online in India?
Ordering online does not remove prescription requirements. Under Rule 65(9)(a) of the Drugs Rules, 1945, medicines listed in Schedules H, H1, and X “shall not be sold by retail except on and in accordance with the prescription of a Registered Medical Practitioner.” The Ministry says prescription medicines are to be supplied from licensed premises by or under a registered pharmacist’s personal supervision.

Use a current prescription and follow the prescriber’s directions. Do not use a site that encourages you to bypass a prescription requirement. If the service proposes a change to the medicine, strength, or form, ask the dispensing pharmacist or prescriber before accepting it or taking the medicine.
What to check when the order arrives
- Match it to your prescription and order. Check the medicine name, strength, and form. If anything differs, contact the dispensing pharmacy or prescriber rather than guessing about a substitution or dose.
- Inspect the pack and label. Check the manufacturer, batch number, and expiry information. Do not use the medicine if its identity does not match, the packaging or label appears altered, or the expiry date has passed.
- Keep the paperwork. Save the invoice and order record so you can identify the dispensing pharmacy and refer back to the medicine supplied. A 2017 committee report’s proposed retail model included an invoice showing pharmacy identity, batch number, and expiry; this is a useful documentation benchmark, not proof that every service follows that model.
- Ask before taking an uncertain medicine. Contact the dispensing pharmacy or a health professional about a mismatch, damaged or suspicious packaging, or unclear labelling. Do not try to resolve uncertainty by changing the dose yourself.
The Drugs Rules include traceability particulars such as batch, expiry, and manufacturer information in their record and labelling requirements. If you suspect a quality problem, use the relevant consumer resources from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), including its information on not-of-standard-quality drugs, recalls, and adverse drug reaction reporting. These resources provide ways to consult information and report concerns; they do not certify the quality of a particular marketplace order.

What current rules say—and what they do not establish
India’s Drugs and Cosmetics framework regulates medicine sales, with state licensing authorities responsible for licensing and oversight. A separate question is whether a proposed nationwide e-pharmacy registration system or portal is already in force. The 2017 committee report and a government summary described proposals such as an e-pharmacy registration mechanism and a national portal. In its 2025 parliamentary answer, the Ministry said draft rules incorporating e-pharmacy provisions had been published for comments. Do not treat the older proposals as current requirements unless a current notification or amendment confirms them.
The committee report also discussed prescription verification, audit trails, patient counselling, and confidentiality as areas for a proposed framework. These are recommendations, not verified protections that can be assumed for every online service.
