Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteResearch a pharma stock by separating what the company sells now from what it hopes to develop, then test its clinical evidence, regulatory path, product durability, finances and valuation assumptions. For a U.S.-focused review, start with the company’s latest annual report and quarterly filing, and verify drug-development claims against FDA records and trial records. A promising candidate or favorable announcement is not proof of approval, future revenue or investment returns.
What does the company actually sell today?
Start with the latest annual report and quarterly filing. Make a list of approved products, the indications they are approved to treat, the geographies where they are sold, and the products that contribute most to revenue. Note licensing and collaboration arrangements, as well as the company’s stated risks.
Keep established-product cash flow separate from pipeline potential. An investigational drug is not established revenue: it has not been approved for marketing, and its eventual commercial value is uncertain. Management’s plans and forecasts can help identify what to investigate, but they are not evidence that a milestone or sales target will be achieved.
- Record revenue concentration: is the business supported by several products or mainly by one or a few?
- Distinguish the company’s own products from products commercialized through partners or licensing agreements.
- Note material regulatory, development, manufacturing and financing risks described in the filings.
How can you verify the pipeline?
For each candidate that could materially affect the investment case, create a separate record. Use the trial identifier to locate the underlying trial record, then compare that record with the company’s announcement. A phase label alone is not enough to assess what was studied or what the result means.

#1 Best Overall
- Candidate and intended indication
- Trial phase and trial identifier
- Study design, population or enrollment, dose and comparator
- Primary endpoints and trial status
- Disclosed results and the company’s next stated milestones
FDA describes Phase 1 as generally focused on safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics; Phase 2 generally assesses preliminary efficacy, dose response and safety; and Phase 3 generally gathers substantial effectiveness and further safety evidence in larger populations. These are broad descriptions, not guarantees of success or rigid boundaries: requirements vary, and phases may overlap or combine.
Where results are available, check which patients were studied, whether the primary endpoints were met, the size and uncertainty of the effect, the comparator, dose, study duration and adverse events. Consider whether the result appears clinically meaningful for the intended use and whether the pivotal study design could support the label the company expects to seek. A press release or a move to a later phase is not a substitute for the trial results and regulator documents.
What do IND, clinical-trial phases and NDA mean for investors?
These are distinct steps, not synonyms for progress toward a guaranteed launch. The FDA describes an Investigational New Drug application (IND) as the route into human clinical trials after required nonclinical and other information is submitted. A New Drug Application (NDA) is the formal request for marketing approval. The company seeking to market a drug is responsible for testing it and submitting evidence that it is safe and effective; the FDA reviews the NDA evidence and proposed labeling.

Review can involve requests for additional data, manufacturing inspections, limitations on labeling or postmarket requirements. Positive preclinical or early clinical findings do not assure success in later studies or approval. Treat each announced milestone as evidence of what has happened—not proof of the next outcome.
| FDA timing figure | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| About eight-and-a-half years | The FDA’s broad estimate of the time to study and test a new drug before it can be approved for the general public; the cited page does not state a year for this estimate. | A company-specific development schedule, probability of success or promised approval date. |
| 10 months | The FDA page’s standard-drug NDA review goal: action on at least 90 percent of applications no later than 10 months after receipt. The page does not state a year for this goal. | The full time required to develop a drug or a guarantee of a particular application’s review outcome. |
| 6 months | The FDA page’s review goal for priority drugs; the page does not state a year for this goal. | A guaranteed decision date or an estimate of the total development timeline. |
How durable are the company’s approved products?
For each major product, investigate competing therapies, pricing and reimbursement exposure, product concentration, and the potential for generic or biosimilar competition where applicable. Examine the product-specific patent and exclusivity record rather than relying on a single date in a company presentation.
Patents and statutory exclusivity are different protections, arise under different rules and may overlap—or may not. They can cover different aspects of a product. FDA identifies the Orange Book as the official vehicle for disseminating relevant patent and exclusivity information for covered products; check the current product-specific record and legal context.

| U.S. statutory exclusivity example | Period described by FDA | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Orphan drug exclusivity | 7 years | Applies when the statutory criteria are met; not interchangeable with patent term. |
| New chemical entity exclusivity | 5 years | Applies when the statutory criteria are met; not interchangeable with patent term. |
| New clinical investigation exclusivity | 3 years | Applies when the statutory criteria are met; not interchangeable with patent term. |
| Pediatric exclusivity | 6 months added to existing patents or exclusivity | This is an addition to qualifying existing protection, not a standalone patent term. |
These periods are examples listed on the FDA page, which does not state a year. They do not by themselves tell you when competition will begin for a particular product. Verify the current record and avoid treating every listed patent as protection for the same product features.
Can the company fund and manufacture what it is developing?
Scientific evidence matters only if the company can execute the next steps. Review cash and investments, operating cash flow, debt and maturities, anticipated trial commitments, partner funding, share issuance and the company’s stated liquidity runway. Treat runway as a company estimate based on assumptions, not a guarantee that financing will remain available on acceptable terms.

Also examine manufacturing capacity, suppliers, quality systems and inspection disclosures. FDA review includes manufacturing information, facility compliance and product-quality requirements. A development program can face practical obstacles even when a study result is favorable; the available general regulatory and risk information does not establish the current runway or facility condition of any specific issuer.

How should you turn uncertain milestones into an investment view?
Build scenarios instead of relying on one forecast. For each material candidate, write down the evidence and assumptions behind timing, potential patient population, competition, uptake, price and costs. Label projections as your assumptions; they are not sourced outcomes or guaranteed milestones.
- Progress case: the next key study succeeds and the regulator accepts the evidence. Identify which trial results and regulatory steps would have to support that case.
- Delay or additional-study case: development takes longer or more evidence is requested. Consider how that changes costs, timing and the need for financing.
- Failure or financing-pressure case: a study fails or the company cannot fund the expected work on its planned terms. Consider the effect on pipeline value and the business’s ability to continue development.
Then compare your assumptions with the current share price and the company’s financial position. The point is not to predict which case will occur with certainty, but to make clear what must go right for the investment thesis to work and what could undermine it.

Compare companies only when their businesses offer a useful basis for comparison. A diversified manufacturer with approved-product revenue and a single-asset development-stage company have different risk profiles; pipeline phase alone does not make them peers.

How to use this framework
- Read the latest annual report and quarterly filing; map current products, revenue concentration, partners and stated risks.
- For each material candidate, locate its trial record by identifier and compare the study design, endpoints, status and results with company announcements.
- Separate trial progress from an NDA and from FDA approval; assess the evidence and proposed label rather than assuming a milestone determines the outcome.
- Check competition, product-specific patent and exclusivity information, and commercial exposure for major approved products.
- Review liquidity, financing needs and manufacturing disclosures alongside the clinical case.
- Write progress, delay and failure scenarios, then compare the assumptions with relevant peers and the current valuation.
This framework is U.S.-focused. Regulatory requirements, exclusivity rules and records should not be generalized to other jurisdictions without checking the applicable regulator and local rules.
