How to Send Money to Family Abroad Safely and Avoid Transfer Scams

A safer international money transfer starts with verifying the request, checking recipient details, comparing the full cost, and saving a transaction record.

To send money to family abroad safely, verify the request using a phone number or contact method you already trust, check the recipient and payout details, compare the full cost and expected arrival, and use a provider you can identify and reach. Save the receipt and transaction number. If a transfer is delayed, incorrect, or suspicious, contact the provider promptly. Legal protections depend on where you send from and the details of the transfer.

1. Verify the request through a trusted channel

Before sending anything, contact your family member using a number you already have or another trusted route—not the number, link, or account included in the unexpected message. Confirm that they asked for the money, why they need it, and how they want to receive it.

Be wary of urgent messages that claim to come from a relative, including someone saying a grandchild or other family member is in trouble. Scammers may impersonate relatives or people met online. The U.S. Department of State advises: “Never send money to someone abroad if you have not met them in person – especially if you met online.” The State Department’s scam guidance provides further warning signs.

2. Confirm recipient details and a usable delivery method

Ask your relative which method they can safely and practically use. Depending on the destination and provider, options may include a bank-account deposit or cash pickup, among other channels. Availability varies, so do not assume a method offered for one country or provider is available for another. Canada’s Financial Consumer Agency and Australia’s Moneysmart guidance describe common options and considerations.

Before confirming, check the recipient’s name spelling and all account, phone, or pickup details required by the provider. Ask whether the recipient needs an account or identification to collect the funds. A transfer sent using incorrect details may be delayed or difficult to correct.

3. Compare the total cost and amount the recipient should get

Do not choose by advertised transfer fee alone. Compare the amount you will pay with the amount the recipient is expected to receive, and review the exchange rate, disclosed fees and taxes, and delivery time. A zero or low fee does not necessarily mean the transfer costs less overall: providers set their own exchange rates and fees, and costs can vary with the amount, destination, and delivery method. The recipient’s bank or local taxes may also affect what arrives. See the CFPB’s international money-transfer guidance and Canada’s cost-comparison guidance.

Compare the actual options available for your route, rather than assuming one provider is best for every destination. Check whether the quoted arrival time meets your relative’s need; delivery may take minutes or several days, and a faster option may cost more. Australia’s Moneysmart guide also notes that costs vary by route, amount, and payment method.

4. Choose a provider you can identify and contact

Research the business before paying. Check how to contact it if something goes wrong, ask what protections or guarantees apply, and confirm that it provides a receipt and transaction number. An advertised price or fast delivery time is not, by itself, evidence that a service is trustworthy. Provider availability and transfer methods differ by destination. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada recommends checking a provider and keeping transaction records.

5. Save your records and protect private information

Keep the receipt, transaction number, provider contact details, and relevant messages. These details can help the provider trace a transfer or investigate a mismatch, delay, or error. Do not post account or identity information publicly. The CFPB and Canada’s consumer agency both advise keeping transfer records.

6. If a transfer goes wrong, contact the provider promptly

Use the provider’s official contact channel and give it the transaction number, a clear description of the problem, and supporting documents or screenshots. If the recipient received less than expected, ask the provider to explain the exchange rate, fees, taxes, or other charges that applied; a receiving bank or local authority may affect the final amount. The CFPB’s guidance explains U.S. procedures for covered transfers.

What protections apply to international transfers?

Rights depend on the sender’s country, the provider, and whether the transaction meets the applicable legal definition. Guidance from U.S., Canadian, and Australian authorities supports checking costs and keeping records, but it does not establish identical legal rights across countries.

For covered transfers sent from the United States

The CFPB generally describes a remittance transfer as an electronic transfer of more than $15 sent to a person or company in another country through a remittance transfer provider. The protections apply only when the transfer and provider fall within the relevant legal definitions. For covered transfers, providers generally must disclose specified information before and after payment, including fees and taxes, the applicable exchange rate, and the expected amount delivered. Details are in the CFPB’s explanation of remittance transfers and rights, reviewed October 3, 2024.

For a covered U.S. transfer, the CFPB says a consumer generally may cancel within 30 minutes after sending it, as long as the recipient has not already picked up or received the money. Its current consumer guidance also says covered providers generally have 90 days to investigate a reported error, and a consumer can report a problem up to 180 days from the date the funds are available. These periods are U.S.-specific general rules, not guarantees for every international transfer. Check the CFPB’s current guidance and act promptly if there is a problem.

For transfers sent from other countries

Do not assume U.S. cancellation or error rules apply. Consult the financial consumer regulator in the country you are sending from and check the terms that apply to your provider and transfer. Canada’s consumer agency and Australia’s Moneysmart offer country-specific guidance on comparing and sending transfers.
