To receive an international transfer into your existing bank account, ask your bank for its current incoming-payment instructions for the relevant currency and route, then give those exact details to the sender. Before the sender submits the payment, confirm the expected amount to be credited, fees, exchange rate and delivery estimate. Requirements differ by bank, country, currency and payment method, so do not guess a code or assume every transfer uses SWIFT or an IBAN.

What details do I give someone to receive an international bank transfer?

Start with the receiving bank, not a generic online checklist. Ask for its instructions for an incoming international transfer into your specific account, ideally naming the sending country and currency. The bank can tell you which fields apply and whether the payment must pass through an intermediary bank.

Ask your bank for the exact instructions

Request the bank’s current beneficiary details and any required routing or intermediary instructions. International payment chains can carry information in different formats; U.S. FinCEN guidance describes systems such as SWIFT, Fedwire and CHIPS, but it is not a universal consumer form. Australian Moneysmart notes that banks use SWIFT to connect financial institutions for international bank transfers; that does not mean every international payment method uses SWIFT. Australian Moneysmart’s transfer guidance explains its local context.

Give the sender the bank-provided information

Depending on the route, the sender may need:

  • Your beneficiary name exactly as recorded by your bank.
  • Your account identifier, using the format your bank specifies.
  • The receiving bank’s name and address.
  • Any required country-specific bank identifier or intermediary-bank details supplied by your bank.

Do not substitute a guessed SWIFT/BIC, IBAN, routing number or intermediary detail. Some destinations use these identifiers; others use different information, and not every transfer rail requires the same fields.

What should the sender confirm before submitting?

Ask the sender to check the payment details with their provider before authorizing the transfer. Confirm both the sending and receiving currencies, the exchange rate and when it is fixed, all stated fees, who pays intermediary charges, the expected net amount to your account, and the estimated availability date. A quoted sender fee alone does not establish what you will receive.

  • Net amount: Ask for the amount expected to arrive in your account after conversion and charges.
  • Fee allocation: Check whether the sender, you, or the payment chain bears transfer, intermediary-bank and receiving-bank fees. A fee option covering intermediary costs may be available on some routes, but terms vary.
  • Delivery estimate: Verify the provider’s estimate for the actual country, currency and payment route.
  • Deposit support: Confirm that the service supports deposit to your account in that destination and currency.
  • Tracking and recourse: Find out how to confirm delivery and how errors or complaints are handled.

Disclosure protections depend on where the transfer is sent, the provider and whether the transaction qualifies. In the United States, the CFPB’s Regulation E rules require specified disclosures for covered remittance transfers, including applicable fees, exchange rate and amount to be received, while noting certain third-party fees or taxes may reduce the amount. This is not a worldwide entitlement. CFPB Regulation E, section 1005.31 sets out the U.S. rule. UK FCA guidance says firms should make clear when intermediary or recipient-bank charges may be deducted; its example of an upfront option covering intermediary costs is not necessarily available on every transfer. The FCA’s international-payments review applies in its UK context. Canada’s FCAC also cautions that receiving-country charges and exchange-rate changes can affect the amount received. FCAC’s international money transfer guidance advises comparing costs and asking when the exchange rate is applied.

How long does an international money transfer take to reach my account?

Timing depends on the provider and route. Canada’s FCAC gives a general range of a few minutes to a few days and notes faster service may cost more; that is guidance, not a guarantee for a particular bank transfer. Use the actual provider’s estimate for the transaction. FCAC’s timing and cost guidance is Canadian consumer information.

Ask the sender to keep the receipt and transaction reference and share them with you. The reference helps the sending provider and receiving bank identify the payment if you need to check its status. FCAC recommends retaining the receipt and reference for tracing; the CFPB advises contacting the company promptly if there is a problem. CFPB guidance on remittance-transfer problems is for U.S. consumers.

Why did I receive less than the amount sent?

The amount sent may differ from the amount credited because of currency conversion, the provider’s charges, intermediary-bank fees, receiving-bank fees or applicable taxes. The exchange rate may also change the recipient amount, depending on when it is applied. Ask the provider and your bank to explain the specific deductions and conversion used; a sender-paid fee does not necessarily cover every charge in the payment chain.

What should I do if an international transfer is missing?

  1. Get the transaction reference. Ask the sender for the provider’s receipt, reference number, submission date and the amount and currency sent.
  2. Check with your receiving bank. Ask whether it can see the payment, whether it is pending review, or whether information is missing. Use the bank’s own incoming-payment instructions to confirm that the sender used the correct details.
  3. Ask the sending provider to trace it. Contact the provider promptly with the reference and request an investigation if the bank cannot locate the funds. The sender may need to initiate the trace.
  4. Escalate through the formal complaint route if needed. If direct investigation does not resolve the issue, use the provider’s or bank’s complaint process. Complaint rights and procedures vary by country and provider; for example, FCAC describes complaint handling for federally regulated Canadian financial institutions. FCAC’s complaint process is specific to that Canadian context.
