Evaluate Alphabet by tracing its business growth into operating profit, then into cash remaining after infrastructure spending, and finally comparing that cash-generating capacity with the price of the shares. Alphabet reported strong fiscal 2025 growth, but its June 2026 outlook also pointed to unusually heavy investment. Without a current share price and updated valuation inputs, those facts are not enough to call the stock cheap or expensive.

Start with the full chain: growth, cash, then price

A useful stock assessment connects three questions: Are Alphabet’s businesses growing in ways that can produce durable profits? How much cash remains after the spending needed to support that growth? What expectations are already reflected in the share price?

  1. Measure operating progress. Compare revenue, operating income, operating margin, net income, and diluted earnings per share (EPS) across the same periods.
  2. Test cash conversion. Calculate free cash flow (FCF) consistently as operating cash flow minus purchases of property and equipment. Assess whether cash generation is keeping pace with earnings after infrastructure needs.
  3. Value the resulting earnings or cash flows. Use a dated share price, a clearly identified earnings or cash-flow period, and assumptions that account for reinvestment and share count.

Keep reported results separate from forecasts. The figures below are company-reported historical results or company guidance, not predictions of future returns.

What do Alphabet’s earnings say about growth quality?

Compare revenue growth with profit and per-share growth

Alphabet’s February 4, 2026 results release reported fiscal 2025 revenue of $402.836 billion, up 15% year over year; operating income of $129.039 billion; net income of $132.170 billion; and diluted EPS of $10.81. The release reported net income growth of 30% and diluted EPS growth of 31% for the year. These are results for fiscal 2025, not current trailing-12-month figures or forecasts.

Compare the growth rates rather than treating any single one as a complete picture. Revenue measures sales; operating income and operating margin show what remains after operating costs; net income also reflects items below operating income; diluted EPS measures earnings per share after accounting for dilution. If EPS rises faster than revenue, check whether operating profit improved, the share count changed, or non-operating items affected net income.

Look at business mix, not just the fastest growth rate

In Q4 2025, Alphabet reported Google Services revenue growth of 14%, Search and other growth of 17%, subscriptions, platforms and devices growth of 17%, YouTube advertising growth of 9%, and Google Cloud revenue growth of 48% to $17.7 billion. The company also reported that full-year 2025 YouTube revenue across advertising and subscriptions exceeded $60 billion.

Those figures use different revenue bases and businesses with different economics. Do not add their growth rates, infer profit contribution from growth alone, or assume the fastest-growing segment contributes the most earnings. Track the segment’s revenue alongside its operating income or margin where reported, and consider whether growth is large enough to affect Alphabet’s total results.

Separate recurring operating progress from accounting effects

Read operating income and operating margin alongside net income and EPS. Review taxes, interest, and investment gains or losses before interpreting a sharp change in net income as evidence of improved core operations. Alphabet’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 discusses substantial non-operating gains related to equity investments in 2026. Those gains can affect net income growth without representing recurring operating performance.

How much cash does Alphabet generate after investment?

Calculate free cash flow consistently

Start with operating cash flow, then subtract purchases of property and equipment for the same reporting period. Compare the resulting FCF trend with revenue, operating income, and diluted EPS. Use the same period and definition each time; working-capital timing can move cash flow between periods, while stock-based compensation can affect how reported earnings and cash generation compare.

FCF is a useful measure of cash remaining after property and equipment purchases, but it is not a promise that the entire amount can be distributed to shareholders. It does not capture every future obligation or investment need, and the figure can be affected by timing. Treat it as one part of the analysis rather than a direct measure of shareholder return.

Put AI infrastructure spending in the same frame

Alphabet’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K said the company expected a significant increase in technical infrastructure investment in 2026, including servers, network equipment, and data centers. It also anticipated higher depreciation, energy, equipment, and network costs as AI services scale.

In its June 2026 investor presentation, Alphabet reported $174 billion in trailing-twelve-month operating cash flow and forecast 2026 capital expenditure of $180–190 billion, with a significant increase expected in 2027. The cash-flow figure is trailing-twelve-month, while the capex range is a full-year outlook: they cover different periods and must not be subtracted as if they formed a matched-period FCF calculation. The capex range is guidance from June 2026, not a final spending result.

Test whether the investment is earning a return

Watch whether new capacity supports revenue and profit, not simply whether spending rises. Relevant indicators include Cloud revenue growth and operating margin, AI-related revenue where the company reports it, incremental operating profit, depreciation, and cash conversion over several reporting periods.

Alphabet’s Q1 2026 investor presentation reported Google Cloud revenue of $20 billion, a 33% operating margin, and a $462 billion backlog at quarter end. These are company-reported figures. Backlog is not recognized revenue: it indicates contracted or committed business under the company’s reporting definition, not cash already collected or guaranteed profit.

Which share count and capital structure belong in the analysis?

Alphabet has Class A, Class B, and Class C common shares. Its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 reported the following outstanding counts as of July 15, 2026:

Share class Shares outstanding as of July 15, 2026
Class A 5,868 million
Class B 835 million
Class C 5,527 million
Total, calculated from the class counts above 12,230 million

These are point-in-time outstanding share counts, not the weighted-average diluted share count used to calculate EPS. Use a current, appropriate share count when estimating market capitalization or converting an enterprise-value estimate to a per-share value; use diluted weighted-average shares when interpreting reported EPS.

Alphabet’s Q2 2026 earnings release reported $49.6 billion in net proceeds from a combination of Class A, Class C, and mandatory convertible preferred issuance, plus $20.3 billion in net proceeds from senior notes. The release also described an at-the-market common-stock program of up to $40 billion. These financing actions make it important to reconcile equity issuance, potential dilution, and debt through the valuation date rather than relying on an older share count or balance sheet.

The Q2 2026 filing describes a $0.22 quarterly cash dividend on common shares, subject to board approval. A dividend contributes to shareholder return, but does not by itself establish whether the shares are attractively valued.

How should Alphabet’s valuation be estimated?

Use valuation methods as cross-checks, not as interchangeable answers. Each requires a share price and financial inputs tied to a specific date and period.

Valuation lens Calculation or approach What to check
Trailing P/E Share price divided by diluted EPS for a stated trailing period Use a current quote and EPS covering the same stated period; identify whether unusual non-operating items affected earnings.
Forward P/E Share price divided by a clearly identified forward EPS estimate Name the estimate source, forecast period, and assumptions. Forecast EPS is not reported earnings.
Price to FCF Equity value divided by FCF for a stated, consistently defined period Align share price, share count, cash-flow period, and capex definition. Heavy investment can make a single year’s multiple unusually high or low.
Discounted cash flow Present value of forecast cash flows, including an estimate beyond the explicit forecast period Model revenue by business, margins, taxes, capex and other reinvestment, and discount rate. Test a range of assumptions; the result is not a precise intrinsic value.
Enterprise-value cross-check Market capitalization adjusted for cash and debt Update cash, debt, and share count through the valuation date before comparing enterprise value with operating measures.

For a DCF, make the assumptions visible: how fast each business grows, how much operating margin it earns, how much capital is reinvested, and what discount rate reflects the risk of those future cash flows. Test how the result changes when growth, margins, capex intensity, or the discount rate shifts. A single output can imply more certainty than these assumptions support.

Alphabet’s FY2025 diluted EPS of $10.81 can serve as a historical reference point, but it is not a current trailing or forward EPS figure for an October 2026 valuation. No current October 7, 2026 share quote, P/E, price-to-FCF multiple, peer multiple, or historical valuation comparison is established here. Do not label the shares cheap or expensive without recalculating against a dated market price and updated financial inputs.

Comparisons with Alphabet’s own past valuation or with other large platform companies are useful only after aligning fiscal periods, accounting treatment, growth, margins, and capital intensity. Otherwise, apparent multiple differences may reflect unlike earnings periods or investment burdens rather than mispricing.

Quick Recap

Which risks could change the earnings or cash-flow outlook?

  • Advertising concentration and economic sensitivity: Alphabet reported that more than 70% of its 2025 revenue came from online advertising. The company says ad demand is sensitive to economic conditions.
  • AI’s effect on search and advertising: Alphabet acknowledges uncertainty about how AI may reshape advertising and whether it can adapt successfully. Assess whether AI-driven usage can generate revenue sufficient to cover compute and infrastructure costs.
  • Infrastructure constraints and costs: Data-center capacity, power availability, equipment, networks, depreciation, and ongoing operating costs can influence both growth and cash conversion.
  • Competition and distribution: Monitor competitive pressure in search and cloud, as well as partner distribution costs, because these can affect revenue, margins, and the economics of customer acquisition.
  • Regulatory exposure: Include legal and regulatory developments in a risk assessment, but do not assign a financial impact or likely outcome without evidence supporting that estimate.

A practical review before drawing a conclusion

  • Use reported results for the exact fiscal or quarterly period, and label company guidance as an outlook rather than a result.
  • Compare revenue, operating income, margin, net income, and diluted EPS growth; investigate differences rather than relying on EPS alone.
  • Examine segment growth in context of revenue base, profitability, and contribution to the whole company.
  • Calculate FCF from operating cash flow less property and equipment purchases for matched periods, then consider working-capital timing and investment needs.
  • Update share counts, cash, debt, issuance, and any potential dilution through the valuation date.
  • Recalculate valuation using a dated quote and explicit assumptions; compare more than one method and test sensitivity to capex, margins, growth, and discount rate.
