Shortlist products that meet mandatory requirements for adhesion, flexibility, hand, durability, and exposure resistance, then test finalists on representative material under consistent conditions. Acrylic, polyurethane, and silicone systems have different roles, but the available supplier descriptions do not establish a universal winner.
How to compare specialty leather and flexible-material coatings for your application
A coating that performs on natural leather may not perform the same way on synthetic leather, coated textile, or another flexible substrate. Even within one substrate category, the primer, base coat, topcoat, existing finish, and surface preparation can change the result. Compare complete coating systems in the intended layer and process, rather than treating “acrylic,” “polyurethane,” or “silicone” as a performance guarantee.
Build a comparison matrix for each candidate. Keep the test substrate, coating build, preparation, cure, conditioning, and test methods consistent wherever you are comparing results.
| Comparison axis | What to record |
|---|---|
| Substrate and layer | Natural or synthetic leather, coated textile, or other flexible material; primer, base coat, or topcoat role; existing finish and preparation. |
| Flexibility and hand | Required bending or flexing; softness, tack, slip, and drape; changes in feel or appearance after cure. |
| Durability | Adhesion, abrasion, rub, scratch, flex cracking, blocking, and wear after conditioning. |
| Exposure | Water uptake or repellency, stains, cleaners, oils, hydrocarbon solvents, acids or alkalis, UV and weathering, heat, and hydrolysis where relevant. |
| Process | Waterborne or solventborne system, application method, coat build, drying and cure conditions, compatibility with other layers, and production constraints. |
| Evidence quality | Exact product and revision, test substrate and preparation, conditioning, test method and result, and whether evidence is supplier-reported or independently tested. |
| Commercial fit | Confirm regional supply, technical support, minimum order, and lead time directly with the supplier; a portfolio page does not establish these details. |
Use requirements to narrow the shortlist
- Screen out failures first. Eliminate candidates that do not suit the substrate, coating layer, production process, or mandatory exposure conditions.
- Rank the remaining trade-offs. Decide which goals matter most in the application—for example, soft hand, abrasion resistance, water repellency, or compatibility with an existing finish.
- Compare evidence on equal terms. Request current technical data sheets and safety data sheets, including product revision and test conditions. Do not treat figures from different substrates or test methods as a head-to-head comparison.
- Validate finalists. Trial the complete coating system on representative material and evaluate it using agreed tests and acceptance criteria.
What acrylic, polyurethane, and silicone systems can do
Resin family is a useful starting point for asking suppliers the right questions, not a substitute for product-specific evidence. Supplier portfolios include multiple grades, blends, and coating roles. The claims below describe the cited suppliers’ products or general material-family guidance; they are not guarantees for every formulation or application.

Acrylic resins
Stahl identifies acrylic resins as sealers and base coats for leather protection in upholstery, garments, shoes, leather goods, and automotive applications. Its portfolio comparison considers abrasion, adhesion, flexing, and film resistance. This makes acrylic systems candidates to evaluate when a leather-finishing sealer or base coat is appropriate; it does not establish acrylic as the best chemistry for any of those uses. See Stahl’s leather resin information.
Polyurethane systems
Polyurethane is not a single performance profile. Dow’s leather portfolio includes polyurethane alongside acrylic and silicone chemistries. Dow’s leather portfolio describes a range of chemistry options rather than a universal polyurethane specification.

As one product-specific example, Siwo describes PUD-355F as an aqueous aliphatic polyurethane dispersion based on polyester and polyether for leather and textile coating. Its product page lists 35±1% solids, 1300–1400% elongation, tensile strength of 4.9 MPa, and modulus at 100% of 0.65 MPa, and claims adhesion, abrasion, hydrolysis, and water resistance. These are supplier-published figures and claims for that product, not independently established comparative results. Check the current technical data sheet, test methods, and revision before using them in a specification. See Siwo’s PUD-355F product page.
Silicone and silicone-modified systems
Silicone may serve as an elastomer or as a modifier in another coating. Dow describes DOWSIL 1248 Fluid as a silicone polyether additive used in polyurethane resin systems for synthetic-leather topcoats. The company says it can impart flexibility, lubricity, and water repellency, and describes slip, mar resistance, leveling, and improved abrasion resistance. Those are product-specific supplier claims; verify suitability and compatibility in the intended formula and layer. See Dow’s DOWSIL 1248 Fluid page.

Evonik’s September 2022 leather-coatings fact sheet describes SILIKOPUR 8081 as a silicone-modified polyurethane dispersion with high flexibility without tackiness, immediate hydrophobization, and fast air-drying. The fact sheet also cautions that hydrophobing emulsions differ in compatibility. Because this document is dated, confirm current product information and compatibility before relying on it. See Evonik’s leather-coatings information.
For general material-family context, a U.S. government handbook describes silicone elastomers as retaining flexibility across a wide temperature range while having poor resistance to hydrocarbon solvents. It describes polyurethane rubber as having high tensile and tear strength and excellent abrasion resistance, but weaker behavior at low and high temperatures. These broad descriptions concern elastomer families, not guaranteed properties of a particular leather coating. Read the U.S. government handbook on organic coatings.

How to test candidates before specifying them
Catalog descriptions alone cannot establish how a coating will perform on a particular material. The cited supplier materials do not provide a same-substrate, same-method head-to-head comparison of the named resins. A defensible selection therefore depends on trials that reflect the intended application.
Ask for comparable technical information
- Current technical and safety data sheets, product revision, binder family, and solids content.
- Test substrate, surface preparation, coating weight or build, cure conditions, and conditioning used for each reported result.
- Test method or standard, measured result, and whether the result is supplier-reported or independently tested.
- Compatibility guidance for primers, base coats, topcoats, additives, and existing finishes in the proposed system.
Choose tests around the actual service conditions
Agree on relevant tests and pass criteria with the customer, supplier, and any applicable industry or regulatory requirements. Depending on use, evaluate adhesion, flex cracking, abrasion or rub, water and stain repellency, chemical exposure, heat or cold flex, and appearance or hand after aging. The sources cited here do not establish one mandatory test standard for every application.

Use representative substrate samples and the intended preparation, application, and cure process. Record results and visual or tactile changes alongside numeric measurements; a formulation that meets a durability target may still alter the feel or appearance required by the product.
When evidence is not directly comparable
A supplier’s result for one product cannot be ranked against another supplier’s result unless the relevant conditions are aligned. Differences in substrate, coating build, preparation, cure, conditioning, and test method can change the outcome. Treat supplier figures as evidence to investigate, not as a market-wide ranking or proof that a chemistry will work in a different coating layer.
