Recommended Free Tools
Choose Koofr if you want documented access across Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android and Huawei, plus WebDAV, rclone and connections to Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive. Choose iCloud Drive if your files already live in Apple’s ecosystem and you want its built-in integration. For privacy, the key distinction is configuration: Koofr’s ordinary storage is encrypted in transit and on its servers, while its optional Vault encrypts files on your device; iCloud Drive is not end-to-end encrypted by default, but Apple’s optional Advanced Data Protection (ADP) makes it end-to-end encrypted.
At a glance: which service fits?
| What matters most | Better fit based on documented features | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Access from a wide mix of platforms and tools | Koofr | Koofr lists browser, desktop and mobile apps, WebDAV and rclone access. |
| Connecting existing cloud accounts | Koofr | It documents connections to Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive; it does not list iCloud as a connector. |
| Files integrated into an Apple account and device environment | iCloud Drive | Apple documents iCloud Drive as a place for files such as Pages, Keynote and Numbers documents, PDFs, Safari downloads and other saved files. |
| End-to-end encryption without turning on a separate option | Neither by default | Koofr’s standard storage is not described as zero-knowledge; iCloud Drive uses Standard Data Protection by default, with keys held by Apple. |
| End-to-end encryption for drive files | Both, with different options | Koofr offers its optional Vault; Apple offers optional ADP for iCloud Drive. |
| Price comparison | Not established here | Koofr advertises 10 GB free, but a current country-matched comparison of paid tiers was not established. Check current regional plans before choosing on price. |
This is a feature-based fit, not a performance ranking. The available official documentation does not establish which service uploads faster, handles simultaneous edits better, or has higher uptime.
Storage: what each drive is for
Koofr: cloud storage plus connections to other accounts
Koofr advertises 10 GB of free storage and describes the offer as free forever; that is a provider-advertised term and could change. It also says there are no individual file-size or file-type limits. Koofr’s feature page describes connecting Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive accounts and searching across them. Those connections do not mean the contents of the other accounts become Koofr storage, and Koofr does not list iCloud among the supported connections. See Koofr’s features and its homepage for current terms.
iCloud Drive: files within Apple’s account environment
Apple describes iCloud Drive as storage for files saved from Apple apps and other sources, including Pages, Keynote, Numbers, PDFs and Safari downloads. The security overview does not provide a matched platform-and-plan comparison with Koofr, so it does not support a broader claim that iCloud Drive is limited to a particular device type. Apple’s current storage plans and availability may vary by country; compare the live local plans rather than assuming a price winner.

Sync and recovery: documented features, not a speed test
Koofr sync options
Koofr says its desktop apps let users select folders for two-way synchronization between a computer and the cloud. Its mobile apps can automatically back up media. Koofr also says deleted files can be recovered for up to 30 days and do not consume storage during that recovery period. These are published capabilities, not independent measurements of reliability or recovery in every account configuration. Details are on Koofr’s features page.
What is not established for either service
The documentation reviewed does not provide a controlled comparison of upload or download speeds, uptime, simultaneous editing, or file-conflict behavior. Those depend on conditions such as device, operating system, network, file size and account settings, so there is no sound basis here to name a sync-performance winner.

Privacy and encryption: compare the actual settings
| Service and setting | What the provider says is protected | Who controls the file-encryption keys? |
|---|---|---|
| Koofr standard storage | Files are encrypted in transit and on Koofr’s servers. | Koofr does not describe ordinary storage as zero-knowledge or client-side encrypted; do not assume the user alone holds the keys. |
| Koofr Vault (optional) | Files are encrypted on the device before upload. | Koofr says only the user knows the Vault key. |
| iCloud Drive with Standard Data Protection (default) | Files are encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers. | Apple stores the keys and says it can decrypt this data for recovery or access on a new device. |
| iCloud Drive with Advanced Data Protection (optional) | Apple lists iCloud Drive as end-to-end encrypted. | Keys are held by trusted devices; Apple says it cannot recover ADP-protected keys. |
Koofr standard storage versus Vault
Koofr says data transfers use SSL/TLS and files are encrypted on its servers. That is meaningful protection, but it is not the same as encrypting files on the user’s device so that the provider cannot access the keys. Koofr’s optional Vault is the client-side, zero-knowledge option: its description says files are encrypted before leaving the device and Koofr does not know the key. Vault’s stronger privacy also makes the user’s key important; consult Koofr’s current Vault recovery guidance before relying on a recovery method.
Koofr says its automated system stores each file in at least three physically separate locations. That is a redundancy statement, not a guarantee against account deletion or service failure, and it does not by itself establish a complete backup strategy.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

Apple default protection versus ADP
Apple says Standard Data Protection is the default for an account. Under it, iCloud Drive is encrypted in transit and on the server, but Apple holds the keys. That means the default should not be called end-to-end encrypted. With ADP turned on, Apple lists iCloud Drive among the categories protected end-to-end, with keys held by trusted devices. Apple’s overview reports 15 end-to-end-encrypted data categories under Standard Data Protection and 25 with ADP; these are Apple’s own category counts, not an independent security rating. See Apple’s iCloud data security overview.
ADP’s recovery and sharing trade-offs
Apple says ADP users must set up a recovery contact or recovery key because Apple cannot recover keys for ADP-protected data. Before enabling it, make sure you understand and can use the recovery method you choose. ADP does not make every piece of iCloud metadata end-to-end encrypted: Apple says file name, type, size and timestamps for iCloud Drive remain under standard protection.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

Sharing also has exceptions. Apple says end-to-end protection for some shared content depends on all participants using ADP. iWork collaboration and public “anyone with the link” sharing are not end-to-end encrypted under ADP. If those workflows matter, check Apple’s current sharing and security details before changing the account setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Koofr work across Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android?
Koofr lists browser access, desktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux, and mobile apps for iOS, Android and Huawei, along with WebDAV and rclone. It also documents connections to Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive. Apple’s security overview is not a full platform compatibility matrix, so it is not enough to make a complete like-for-like platform comparison. If your requirement is a direct Koofr connection to iCloud, the documented Koofr connectors do not include it.

Which should you choose?
Choose Koofr when
- You want the documented range of desktop and mobile platforms, plus WebDAV or rclone access.
- You want to connect Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and search across those accounts.
- You need selectable two-way desktop folder sync or mobile media backup.
- You are willing to use Vault for client-side encryption and manage its key carefully.
Choose iCloud Drive when
- Your files and workflows are already organized around Apple’s account and apps.
- You want iCloud Drive’s default protection and accept that Apple holds its keys, or you are prepared to enable ADP and plan for recovery.
- Your sharing workflow is compatible with ADP’s limits, or you do not need ADP for those shared files.
Before deciding
- Compare current storage plans in your country; this evidence does not establish a paid-plan price winner.
- Decide whether your priority is provider-managed recovery or limiting provider access to file contents.
- For end-to-end protection, identify who will hold the recovery method or key and what happens if it is lost.
- Do not infer faster sync or greater reliability from feature lists; no controlled comparison supports that conclusion.
