Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) is usually the simpler brokerage route: you get Bitcoin price exposure without personally managing crypto transactions or wallet keys. Buying Bitcoin directly gives you control of the Bitcoin—or lets you choose a crypto custodian—but adds platform, transfer, and custody responsibilities. Both routes carry Bitcoin’s price risk, and neither is right for everyone.
What you own with each option
Spot Bitcoin ETP
When you buy a spot Bitcoin ETP, you own shares or units of a product designed to provide Bitcoin price exposure—not Bitcoin in a wallet that you can transfer or use on-chain. The product’s structure and legal terms vary, so check its prospectus. Fidelity notes that FBTC’s performance will not reflect the specific return an investor would have received by buying Bitcoin directly (Fidelity Crypto Funds).
The word “ETF” is common shorthand, but it may not precisely describe the legal structure of every spot Bitcoin product. The SEC’s September 2024 investor bulletin explains that these products may use “ETF” in their names or be called ETFs in public discussion. For example, iShares says its Bitcoin trust is not an investment company registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 (iShares Bitcoin Trust). “Spot Bitcoin ETP” is a useful general term; the product’s own disclosures are definitive.
Bitcoin bought directly
A direct buyer acquires Bitcoin through a crypto platform or other purchase route. The Bitcoin may be held in a platform or custodian account, or moved to a wallet the buyer controls. Direct ownership can permit wallet-level transfers and on-chain use, subject to the platform, custody, and network arrangements. It is not the same as owning a security share in an ETP.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
How the two routes compare
| Consideration | Spot Bitcoin ETP | Bitcoin bought directly |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | Shares or units of a product intended to provide Bitcoin exposure; structure varies by product. | Bitcoin held in a wallet or through a crypto platform or custodian. |
| How you access it | A brokerage account and exchange-traded product; availability and eligibility vary. | A crypto platform or wallet arrangement; features and availability vary. |
| Who handles Bitcoin keys | The product’s service providers handle custody of underlying Bitcoin; you do not personally manage those keys. | You manage keys in self-custody or rely on an outside custodian, each with distinct risks. |
| Costs to check | Sponsor fee and any brokerage trading costs. | Possible platform transaction or spread costs, custody and transfer fees, and setup or closure fees. |
| Transfers and use | Owning ETP shares does not give you control of Bitcoin for wallet transfers or on-chain use. | Wallet-level control and transfers may be possible, subject to the arrangement and network. |
| Risks beyond Bitcoin’s price | Tracking and expense effects, plus product, sponsor, and custodian risks. | Platform, custody, key-loss, and transaction risks. |
This is a qualitative comparison, not a claim that one route always costs less. Product fees, availability, custody arrangements, and legal structures can change; consult the current prospectus and relevant brokerage, platform, or custodian fee schedule.
How to compare costs
Spot Bitcoin ETPs generally pay a sponsor fee that a direct Bitcoin holder does not pay, according to the SEC’s investor bulletin on ETPs providing exposure to Bitcoin and Ether. That does not make direct ownership automatically cheaper. A direct buyer may pay transaction charges or spreads, as well as fees for custody, transfers, account setup, or closure. Ask a custodian about annual asset-based charges, transaction fees, transfer fees, and account setup or closure fees, and check the provider’s current schedule.

For either route, compare the costs you are actually likely to incur: the ETP’s current sponsor fee and brokerage charges, or the direct platform’s trading, spread, custody, and transfer costs. Trading frequency and the services you choose can affect the comparison. Do not rely on an old fee ranking or a headline claim that direct Bitcoin is “free.”
Custody and security responsibilities
If you buy an ETP
You use brokerage infrastructure and rely on the product’s sponsor and service providers for custody of the underlying Bitcoin. That avoids personal wallet-key management, but it does not remove product, sponsor, or custodian risk. Read the product disclosures to understand the arrangement.

If you buy Bitcoin directly
You must decide whether to leave Bitcoin with a platform or custodian, or use self-custody. With self-custody, the security and recovery information—including the seed phrase—requires careful handling. The SEC advises investors to keep a seed phrase secure and never share it. A hardware wallet is an optional tool for cold storage, not a requirement or a guarantee of safety; physical devices typically cost money, and you remain responsible for recovery information. The SEC’s crypto asset custody bulletin outlines custody considerations for retail investors.
Which route may fit your priorities?
A spot Bitcoin ETP may fit if
- You want Bitcoin price exposure through a brokerage account.
- You do not need to transfer or use Bitcoin from a personal wallet.
- You prefer not to manage wallet keys or crypto-platform transactions yourself.
- You are comfortable evaluating a product’s prospectus, sponsor fee, and service-provider risks.
Direct Bitcoin may fit if
- You want the ability to control Bitcoin in a wallet or use wallet-level transfers.
- You are prepared to choose a platform or custodian and assess its fees and safeguards.
- You understand the additional security and recovery responsibilities involved in self-custody, if you choose it.
These are practical distinctions, not recommendations. The SEC has cautioned that listing spot Bitcoin ETPs did not amount to an endorsement of Bitcoin or the products’ custody arrangements. In his January 10, 2024 statement, then-Chair Gary Gensler wrote: “While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin” (SEC statement on the approval of spot Bitcoin ETPs).

Risks and tax considerations
Neither route makes Bitcoin a safe or low-risk holding. Bitcoin’s price can be volatile; an ETP also has product, sponsor, custody, tracking, and expense considerations, while direct ownership adds platform, custody, key-loss, and transaction risks. The SEC advises investors to weigh the potential risks and benefits of products that provide Bitcoin exposure.
This comparison does not establish which route is more tax-efficient. Tax treatment can depend on your jurisdiction, account type, and circumstances; consult current tax guidance for where you live or a qualified tax professional.
