What Amazon’s “Human Capital” Disclosure Says—and What It Doesn’t

Amazon’s 2020 Form 10-K changed its employee-section heading to “Human Capital” and expanded its workforce discussion. Here’s how that disclosure compares with its 2025 filing—and what it does not prove.

Amazon’s shift to a “Human Capital” heading in its 2020 Form 10-K was a change in how the company described its workforce, not evidence by itself of improved working conditions. The filing added discussion of diversity, safety and employee development, while removing the sentence “We consider our employee relations to be good.” The original headline described that 2021 disclosure change; Amazon’s latest annual report reviewed here, for 2025, continues to use the “Human Capital” heading and gives a broader account of workforce programs.

What changed in Amazon’s 2020 annual report

A Form 10-K is a company’s annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In a February 2021 comparison of Amazon’s 2020 filing with the prior year’s, GeekWire reported that Amazon renamed the section “Employees” to “Human Capital,” added material on diversity, safety and employee development, and removed the line “We consider our employee relations to be good.” GeekWire’s account of the 2020 filing change also noted that references to unions were removed from that employee section, while union-related references remained elsewhere in the filing. That distinction matters: the article did not say Amazon removed every union reference from the 10-K.

The wording put workforce issues into a formal corporate-reporting section alongside the company’s business disclosures. It did not, on its own, establish that Amazon’s employee relations had improved or that the revised language changed workers’ experiences. The cited sources show a change in disclosure and emphasis, not a measured cause-and-effect relationship.

What Amazon’s latest 10-K says about its workforce

Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K, for the year ended December 31, 2025, still has a “Human Capital” section. The company says its employees are critical to its customer-centric mission and describes the challenge of competing to attract and retain workers. Its discussion covers pay and benefits, flexible work, training, safety, development, mentorship and employee engagement. These are Amazon’s descriptions of its policies and programs; the filing is not an independent evaluation of their reach or effectiveness.

Workforce size and training

Amazon reported approximately 1,576,000 full-time and part-time employees as of December 31, 2025, and said contractors and temporary personnel also supplement its workforce. The filing also said more than 300,000 employees worldwide had participated in Career Choice, Amazon’s education and skills-training program. The passage presents this as cumulative participation, not the number enrolled during 2025.

For context, Amazon’s 2024 Form 10-K reported approximately 1,556,000 full-time and part-time employees as of December 31, 2024, and more than 240,000 worldwide Career Choice participants. The company’s approximate year-end employee counts rose by about 20,000 between those dates, while its stated Career Choice participation threshold increased. These disclosures do not provide a methodology for a precise like-for-like comparison, and the Career Choice totals are cumulative rather than annual enrollment figures.

Pay, benefits, safety and upskilling

Amazon’s 2025 proxy statement adds company-reported figures. Amazon said it invested $2.2 billion in 2024 toward increases in U.S. frontline employee pay and benefits, and that more than 350,000 U.S. employees were participating in upskilling programs by the time of the statement. It also said it had invested more than $2 billion in safety efforts since 2019.

The proxy reports that, in 2024, women globally and in the United States received 99.9 cents for every dollar paid to men in comparable jobs, and racial and ethnic minority employees in the United States received 99.4 cents for every dollar paid to white employees in comparable jobs. These are Amazon’s comparisons for comparable jobs, not a statement that all employees receive identical pay or that every pay gap has been eliminated.

What the disclosure signals about oversight

The change in terminology made workforce matters more visible in Amazon’s annual-report narrative. Board oversight is also described in the company’s governance documents: the Leadership Development and Compensation Committee charter assigns the committee oversight of human-capital policies, including diversity and inclusion, workplace environment and safety, and corporate culture. That establishes a formal oversight remit; it does not show how particular policies have affected employees.

How to read the “Human Capital” label

For investors and readers, the useful takeaway is that the heading change broadened the subjects Amazon chose to discuss in its regulatory filing. The 2025 filing and proxy show how the company now presents workforce scale, training, compensation, safety and governance. They remain issuer disclosures. The sources cited here do not establish that adopting the label, removing the employee-relations sentence, or adding program descriptions caused measurable changes in workforce outcomes or resolved differing employee perspectives.
