Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProtect a self-custodied Bitcoin wallet by keeping its recovery phrase and private keys secret and offline, securing a wallet-specific backup, and checking the full destination address before every payment. A lost device may be replaceable if the right backup is safe and usable; a phrase disclosed to a scammer can put the funds at risk.
Keep recovery information out of scammers’ hands
A recovery phrase or private key gives control over the wallet it unlocks. Never send it to a person claiming to be support, enter it into a website or message form, or store it in an online note, email, cloud document, or photo library. Bitcoin.org puts the rule plainly: “no legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask you for your seed phrase or private key.” Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance explains why these details must remain private.
Scammers may impersonate a wallet maker, exchange, or support agent; contact people who posted questions publicly; or offer fake recovery help. They often create urgency, such as claiming an account will be suspended. Do not use a link or phone number in an unsolicited message. Navigate to the provider’s official website independently—using a bookmark or a verified address—and start the support request yourself. Do not install remote-access software at a stranger’s request or disclose a backup, PIN, or passphrase.
Ledger warns that unsolicited messages claiming to be from Ledger through text, messaging apps, phone, or post should be treated as phishing; Trezor also describes impersonation and urgency tactics. Use the support channel and recovery procedure published by your own wallet provider rather than assuming every provider handles support identically. See Ledger’s phishing guidance and Trezor’s scam guidance.

Check payments before approving them
Bitcoin payments are generally irreversible. Before sending, inspect the full destination address and the amount and other transaction details shown by your wallet. Do not rely on a few matching characters at the beginning or end of an address.
One scam, called address poisoning, puts small or zero-value transactions into a wallet’s history from addresses resembling ones the owner has used. The aim is to make the victim copy the attacker’s lookalike address later. Use a trusted saved address when appropriate, and verify every character of the destination before confirming. Bitcoin.org describes this and other payment scams in its Avoid Scams guidance.

Make a backup you can restore
Backups protect against a broken, lost, or stolen device only if they remain both available and secret. Follow the backup and restoration instructions for the particular wallet; formats and procedures vary. Bitcoin.org notes that most modern deterministic wallets can restore past and future addresses from one recovery phrase, but that should not be assumed for every wallet or backup scheme. Its wallet security guidance covers backup practices, while Trezor’s backup guide explains restoration after device failure or loss.
- Keep the backup offline and private. Never test it by typing the phrase into a website or online form.
- Consider more than one secure physical location so one fire, theft, or other incident does not destroy the only copy. Each copy creates another place that must be protected from discovery.
- Check the wallet maker’s official instructions for what the backup contains and how to restore it. Make sure you understand the procedure before relying on the backup.
- A durable physical backup, including a metal phrase plate, may help protect against physical damage, but no material protects a phrase that is stolen, exposed, or entered into a fake site.
For substantial savings, a Bitcoin hardware wallet can keep signing keys offline, and a durable offline recovery-phrase backup can help preserve access if the device is lost. These are security choices, not guarantees: a hardware wallet cannot protect funds if its owner reveals the phrase or approves a harmful transaction. Ledger’s recovery-phrase security advice discusses physically securing a backup and the limits of hardware protection.

Choose custody and security to fit how you use Bitcoin
Security options differ in who controls the keys, what must be backed up, and what can go wrong. Bitcoin.org advises keeping only small amounts on everyday devices and describes hardware wallets and multisignature as options for different needs. Its wallet security guide and overview of what users need to know explain the trade-offs.
| Approach | Control and practical use | Recovery and remaining risks |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile or desktop wallet | You manage the wallet on an everyday device; convenient for spending. Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small amounts on such devices. | Recovery depends on that wallet’s backup method. A compromised device, exposed recovery information, or mistaken approval can still put funds at risk. |
| Custodial service | The provider controls the keys or account access rather than giving the user full self-custody. | You depend on the provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. Its account recovery process is not the same as restoring a self-custodied wallet. |
| Hardware or offline wallet | Designed to keep signing keys offline while providing a way to approve transactions. | If the device is lost, recovery may be possible with the correct backup and wallet-specific procedure. The user still has to protect the phrase and verify transactions. |
| Multisignature wallet | A transaction requires approvals from multiple independent keys, reducing reliance on one device or location. | Setup and recovery are more complex. Plan how to keep each required key available and secure; losing or exposing keys can undermine the arrangement. |
Self-custody gives the owner control of the keys and responsibility for backup and recovery. Custody through a service shifts key control to that provider, but introduces dependence on its operations and policies.

What to do if a device or recovery phrase is lost
If the device is lost but the backup is safe
Use the wallet’s official recovery instructions with compatible wallet software or a replacement device. Do not follow recovery steps sent by an unsolicited message, and do not enter the phrase into a web form. Trezor’s backup instructions describe restoring after hardware loss; other wallets may use different procedures.
If the phrase may have been exposed
Treat the wallet as compromised. Consult the provider’s official, wallet-specific guidance about moving funds to a new wallet, and do not give the exposed phrase to a supposed recovery service. Keep any new wallet’s recovery information separate and private.

If both device access and the required recovery information are gone
A self-custodied wallet may be unrecoverable if the needed keys or backup are permanently lost. Bitcoin.org says a developer, miner, wallet provider, or exchange cannot recover funds from a permanently inaccessible self-custodied wallet. The US Federal Trade Commission likewise warns that cryptocurrency funds may not be recoverable after a wallet is lost or compromised. Those warnings concern self-custody; a custodial account follows the provider’s own access and recovery rules. See Bitcoin.org’s explanation and the FTC’s cryptocurrency and scam guidance.
