To calculate Indian GST, multiply the taxable value by the applicable rate and divide by 100. The harder part is confirming that rate: it depends on the product’s or service’s classification, the full wording and conditions of the relevant rate entry, the transaction date, and any later amendments. There is no single GST rate that applies to every product or service.
Calculate GST when you know the taxable value and rate
Use these formulas when one GST rate applies to the full taxable value:

- GST amount = taxable value × GST rate ÷ 100
- Total including GST = taxable value + GST amount
For example, at an assumed rate of 18% on a taxable value of ₹1,000, GST is ₹180 and the total is ₹1,180. This is an arithmetic example only; it does not mean 18% applies to any particular product or service.
Work backwards from a GST-inclusive price
If a gross amount includes one rate of GST and no other complications affect the amount, calculate the embedded tax as follows:

- Embedded GST = gross amount × rate ÷ (100 + rate)
- Taxable value = gross amount ÷ (1 + rate/100)
At an assumed 18% rate, a GST-inclusive amount of ₹1,180 contains ₹180 GST and a taxable value of ₹1,000. If the amount covers items taxed at different rates, or includes other charges requiring separate treatment, this single-rate calculation may not give the right result.
Confirm what counts as the taxable value
The GST calculation starts with the taxable value, which is not necessarily the sticker price or the amount before tax shown in a quotation. Under section 15 of the CGST Act, transaction value is generally used when the statutory conditions are met. The law also provides for additions such as incidental expenses and specified amounts the recipient pays on the supplier’s behalf. Discounts, related-party transactions, non-monetary consideration, reimbursements, and composite or mixed supplies may affect the value or classification. Review the applicable statutory rules for the transaction rather than assuming that every quoted price is the tax base.

Verify the correct rate for a product or service
- Describe the exact supply. Record the product or service, its composition and use where relevant, packaging or label details where relevant, and the transaction date. Rate entries may depend on these facts.
- Identify its classification. Find the relevant HSN heading for goods or accounting classification for services, then read the entire entry, including conditions, exclusions, and notes. The CBIC’s HSN/SAC guidance is historical; check current classification and reporting requirements against current law.
- Check the official rate schedule and subsequent changes. Consult the CBIC GST Goods and Services Rates schedule for the relevant entry. Then check the CBIC Tax Information portal for current notifications, amendments, or clarifications. The schedule includes historical notification references, and the portal says its content is being updated; a schedule entry by itself may not establish the rate in force on your transaction date.
- Determine the tax type. In ordinary intra-State supplies, CGST and SGST or UTGST generally apply; in ordinary inter-State supplies, IGST generally applies. The outcome depends on statutory place-of-supply rules and exceptions, not just the buyer’s billing address. See CGST Act section 9, IGST Act section 5, and IGST Act section 8.
- Reconcile the invoice. Check the description and classification, taxable value, rate, tax amount, place of supply where relevant, and whether reverse charge applies. The applicable particulars are set out in the CBIC tax invoice rules.
- Get advice if the classification is genuinely ambiguous. If two headings seem plausible or a condition or exemption may apply, do not choose a rate based on a generic search snippet. Confirm the notification in force for the transaction and seek qualified tax advice when the amount or dispute is consequential.
Why a percentage alone may not settle the calculation
When two GST treatments appear possible, compare the full circumstances—not just the percentages:
- HSN or service classification and the exact wording of each rate entry
- Conditions, exclusions, and exemptions attached to the entry
- The transaction date and amendments effective on that date
- How the taxable value treats included charges, discounts, or other amounts
- Place of supply and whether CGST plus SGST or UTGST, or IGST, applies
These checks matter because both the rate and the tax base can depend on details that a short product description or price label does not show.

What to do if you cannot confirm the rate
No specific rate can be confirmed without the item or service, relevant transaction facts, date, and classification. Use the exact entry and current notification history to verify it; if the classification or a condition remains uncertain, obtain professional advice before relying on a rate for a material transaction.
