None is a dependable stand-alone signal. A stronger dollar or higher expected real yields can make gold less attractive in some conditions, while uncertainty or stronger investment demand can support it—but other forces can offset those effects.
Why gold has no single price-setting driver
Gold does not pay interest, and its market spans investment and physical uses. Its price therefore reflects both its appeal relative to interest-bearing assets and changing demand for gold itself. The World Gold Council’s Gold Return Attribution Model groups monthly return drivers into four broad themes: economic expansion, risk and uncertainty, opportunity cost, and momentum. That framework helps explain why a move in one indicator does not automatically produce a predictable move in gold.
Each driver below describes a mechanism, not a rule or a ranking. Their importance can change over time, and several may be moving together.
Opportunity cost: real yields and interest-rate expectations
Because gold pays no interest, investors compare it with assets that do. Real yields—the return on an investment after accounting for inflation—are one part of that comparison. When expected real yields rise, the relative appeal of holding non-yielding gold can weaken; when they fall, gold may become more attractive by comparison. These relationships are conditional, not automatic.

Markets also respond to expectations about monetary policy, not just to a central bank’s latest rate decision. The Council’s Q2 2026 outlook identified real yields and monetary-policy expectations as factors to which Western gold ETF flows may be sensitive. A rate announcement alone is therefore not a reliable forecast for the gold price.
The US dollar and currency effects
Gold is commonly quoted in US dollars. A stronger dollar can make dollar-priced gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies and can coincide with weaker investment interest; a weaker dollar can support demand and the dollar price. The effect depends on the broader market setting, so currency movements should be read alongside yields, risk, and flows.

The Council cited dollar weakness as one condition supporting the 2025 rally. In its Q2 2026 account of ETF outflows, it also pointed to a strengthening dollar alongside upward adjustments to inflation and interest-rate expectations, particularly in North America. These dated examples show interacting conditions rather than a universal currency rule.
Geopolitical and economic uncertainty
Investors may turn to gold as a safe-haven or diversification asset when geopolitical tensions, economic concerns, or other uncertainty rise. That demand can support prices, but uncertainty does not guarantee a gain: changes in yields, the dollar, or investor positioning may counteract it. The Council identified geopolitical and geoeconomic uncertainty among the forces behind strong investment interest in 2025.

Investment flows and momentum
Investment demand includes gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs), bars and coins, over-the-counter activity, and investor positioning. These channels can change quickly. Buying can add demand, while outflows or selling can remove it. Momentum can reinforce interest after a price rise, but it does not ensure the trend will continue.
Global gold ETF holdings increased by 801 tonnes over 2025, the second-strongest annual increase on record, according to the World Gold Council’s full-year report published 29 January 2026. That figure measures ETF holdings growth during 2025; it is not a price change or a current-day flow rate.

Central-bank demand
Central banks buy gold for reserve diversification and other strategic reasons. Their purchases add demand, but the pace varies, and published estimates can be revised as more data become available.
- Full year 2025: Central banks made net purchases of 863 tonnes, according to the Council’s report published 29 January 2026.
- Second quarter 2026: Reported net purchases were 289 tonnes. The Council published this estimate on 30 July 2026 using data through 30 June 2026.
These are period-specific estimates, not a fixed annual or quarterly buying rate. They help describe market demand but do not, by themselves, explain a price move.

Jewellery, technology, mining, and recycling
Physical uses influence both demand and supply. Jewellery is a major use of gold, while technology applications also consume it. Higher prices can reduce jewellery volumes and encourage some holders to recycle gold. Mine production and recycling add supply, but mine output usually adjusts gradually rather than responding immediately to a price change.
The Council’s Q2 2026 summary described only modest growth potential from mine production and recycling, and reported technology gold use of 80 tonnes during that quarter. The figure is technology use for Q2 2026, not total gold demand or a price measure.
How the drivers can combine
Gold demand and prices are best understood as the result of several forces acting together. For example, in Q2 2026 the Council attributed gold ETF outflows to weaker prices and, particularly in North America, upward adjustments to inflation and interest-rate expectations alongside a strengthening US dollar. The example illustrates how expectations and currency conditions can coincide with investment outflows; it does not establish a formula that predicts the next move.
For context, global gold demand including over-the-counter activity exceeded 5,000 tonnes in 2025 for the first time, according to the World Gold Council’s report published 29 January 2026. This is a measure of demand across that year, not a price statistic.

A practical way to read a gold-price move
- Check real yields and rate expectations: Are the returns available on competing assets changing?
- Check the dollar: Is the US currency strengthening or weakening, and are buyers outside the dollar market affected?
- Look at risk and investor demand: Are uncertainty, ETF activity, or other investment channels changing?
- Separate demand from supply: Central-bank purchases, jewellery and technology use, mine output, and recycling describe different parts of the market.
- Keep the time period attached to figures: Annual and quarterly demand statistics describe those periods; they are not live readings or forecasts.
This approach can clarify the market context, but it cannot turn any one indicator into a certain prediction. Gold prices and the reported drivers change over time; the cited World Gold Council material covers 2025 and Q2 2026, with Q2 data through 30 June 2026.
