How to Buy Gold: Coins, Bars, ETFs and Other Options Compared

Gold can mean bullion in your possession or financial-market exposure through funds, mining shares, or futures. Compare what each route owns, its costs, and its risks.

You can buy gold as physical bullion, through an exchange-traded product, by owning shares in mining companies, or through futures contracts. These choices do not give you the same thing: coins and bars put metal in your possession, while securities and contracts provide exposure through financial markets. Compare the full cost to buy and sell, what you actually own, and how much risk and work you are taking on before choosing a route. This guide focuses on US investor guidance; taxes, purchase rules, and product availability vary by jurisdiction.

What does it mean to buy gold?

“Buying gold” can mean taking possession of bullion or investing in a product whose value is linked to gold. The distinction matters. A fund share is not necessarily redeemable for a coin or bar, a mining share is ownership in a company, and a futures contract is an agreement that can create leveraged exposure to price movements.

Gold is not a guaranteed safe investment. Its price can fall, and the way you hold exposure can add costs and risks beyond the movement in gold’s price. Start by deciding whether you want physical possession or market exposure, then compare the specific product’s terms.

Compare the main ways to get gold exposure

Route What you own or use Costs and price factors Key risks and considerations
Physical bullion coins or bars Gold bullion in your possession, or held for you under a storage arrangement. Purchase premium over spot, resale discount or spread, and possible delivery, storage, and insurance charges. Authenticity, secure storage, theft, resale terms, and the possibility that the resale price will not recover the purchase premium.
Gold ETF or other exchange-traded product Shares or notes in a product; its structure may hold bullion or use futures or other derivatives. Fund expenses, brokerage or trading costs, and the market price relative to net asset value (NAV). Exposure depends on the product’s legal structure and strategy. A share is not automatically a claim to redeemable metal.
Mining-company shares Ownership in a business that explores for or produces gold. Share-trading costs and the company’s business and market conditions, in addition to gold-price movements. Company-specific and broader market risks mean the share price may not track gold closely.
Gold futures A contract providing exposure to a specified underlying amount and terms. Contract terms, margin requirements, and trading costs. Leverage can amplify losses as well as gains; losses can exceed the amount initially invested.

The labels “ETF,” “ETP,” and “gold investment” do not by themselves tell you what a product holds. Read its official documents to identify the structure, strategy, holdings or reference exposure, and risks.

How to buy physical gold coins or bars

Choose bullion, not a collectible pitch

Bullion coins and bars are sold chiefly for their metal content, with a stated weight and investment-grade purity. A collectible or numismatic coin may be priced partly for rarity or claimed future collector demand. That additional premium may not be recoverable when you sell. “Semi-numismatic” has no special meaning in the CFTC and FINRA investor bulletin, and collectible products may be less liquid.

Compare the complete transaction cost

The spot price is a reference price for gold, not necessarily the price a retail buyer pays. A dealer adds a premium, and the dealer’s buyback price may be below spot. The CFTC and FINRA put the basic relationship this way: “A dealer will always sell metal above the spot price and buy it back below the spot price.” Treat that as an investor-advisory warning about the spread, not a promise about the price or terms of every transaction.

Ask for the total price you would pay and the amount the seller would pay to buy the item back under the stated terms. Compare those figures across sellers for the same weight, purity, and product. A low advertised premium is not enough to judge a deal if other charges or resale restrictions change the economics.

Check the product, seller, and handling terms

  • Confirm the item’s weight, purity, and product description, and ask how its authenticity is established.
  • Ask how the seller earns money, including commissions, markups, and any fees not included in the quoted price.
  • Get delivery costs, payment conditions, expected delivery arrangements, and the process for addressing a problem in writing.
  • If the metal will be stored rather than delivered to you, find out who holds it, what storage and insurance cost, and what documentation establishes your interest in the metal.
  • Ask about resale or buyback terms before purchasing, including any conditions that could affect the price or your ability to sell.

Physical ownership gives you direct possession only if the metal is actually delivered to you. Using a storage provider instead introduces a separate custody and fee arrangement that you should understand before paying.

How to evaluate a gold ETF or other exchange-traded product

Some exchange-traded products hold physical bullion; others use futures or different derivatives. A product’s name is not enough to establish which approach it uses or whether investors can redeem shares for metal.

For ETFs covered by its investor bulletin—those registered as open-end investment companies or unit investment trusts under the Investment Company Act of 1940—the SEC explains that retail investors buy and sell shares on exchanges at market prices. The trading price may be above or below NAV. That bulletin does not cover every commodity ETP or exchange-traded note, so check the product’s own documents rather than assuming the guidance applies to every exchange-traded gold product.

Read the product documents before trading

  1. Identify the legal structure and the product’s stated strategy. Determine whether it holds bullion, trades futures, or uses another form of exposure.
  2. Review the holdings or other exposure, fees and expenses, and the risks described in the prospectus or applicable offering documents.
  3. For a covered ETF, check its historical premium-and-discount information and compare the exchange price with NAV. Market price can differ from NAV when you buy or sell.
  4. Check the brokerage account’s trading costs and how orders are handled. ETF shares and notes are commonly traded through brokerage accounts, but costs and market prices vary by product.
  5. Understand how you would sell and what the product does—and does not—allow investors to redeem or receive.

Ongoing expenses reduce returns, while an exchange price above or below NAV can affect the price at which you enter or exit. Those are separate considerations: a product can have fees even when its market price is close to NAV.

Mining shares and futures are not bullion substitutes

Mining-company shares

A mining share represents ownership in a business, not direct ownership of the gold it may produce. Company operations and other market factors can affect its value alongside gold prices. Use the company’s disclosures to understand its business and risks; do not assume that its share price will move in lockstep with bullion.

Futures contracts

Futures provide contractual price exposure and can involve leverage. Understand the contract’s terms and margin requirements before trading. Leverage magnifies both gains and losses, and losses can exceed the amount initially invested. Futures are therefore materially different from buying a coin or a fully paid share.

What to check before opening a gold IRA

“Gold IRA” is a sales phrase, not a reason to assume an arrangement is inexpensive, suitable, or equivalent to holding coins at home. CFTC and FINRA investor guidance warns about self-directed IRA sales, high fees and commissions, inflated collectible-coin prices, and claims that precious metals are safe.

Before proceeding, establish who holds the assets and ask for all setup and ongoing costs, how the seller and other parties are compensated, and the terms and likely costs of exiting or selling. Check whether the salesperson is registered when registration applies. Scrutinize any pitch that relies on fear, promises safety, or uses collectible value to justify a large markup.

A practical decision checklist

  • If you want metal in your possession: compare bullion by weight, purity, total purchase price, seller terms, delivery, storage needs, insurance, and the price and conditions for resale.
  • If you want exchange-traded exposure: verify what the product holds or uses, its legal structure, expenses, brokerage costs, trading price versus NAV where applicable, and how you can exit.
  • If you are considering company shares: account for the business and market risks that are distinct from owning bullion.
  • If you are considering futures: understand contract terms, margin exposure, leverage, and the possibility of losses beyond your initial investment.
  • If a salesperson is involved: ask how that person or firm gets paid, request complete costs and resale terms, and be cautious of claims that gold is risk-free.

This is general consumer information, not individualized investment or tax advice. Tax treatment, eligibility, dealer practices, prices, and product availability vary by jurisdiction and over time. Consult current local tax guidance and the official documents for the specific product or account.
