How to Fix Missing or Uncredited Social Security Earnings

Review your my Social Security earnings history, compare it with tax and wage records, and follow the right correction path for missing or misassigned earnings.

If wages or self-employment income are missing from your Social Security record—or earnings appear there that belong to someone else—start by reviewing your full earnings history in my Social Security. Compare the year in question with your tax and wage documents, then use the correction route for employee wages, self-employment income, or a mistaken identity match. Social Security’s correction process concerns your earnings record; a paycheck deduction alone does not establish that earnings were credited to the correct record.

Check your earnings record and allow time for recent wages to post

Sign in to my Social Security and review the complete earnings history, not just the latest estimate of future benefits. Compare the year at issue with your W-2s, tax returns, and other wage records. The Social Security Administration (SSA) explains: “Every year your employer tells us how much money you earned so we can update your Social Security record.” See SSA’s Review record of earnings guidance.

A recent omission may be a posting delay rather than a permanent error. SSA says current-year or prior-year earnings may take time to appear and recommends checking in August to confirm the previous year’s amount. If a recent year is incomplete, compare again after that period before treating it as lost earnings.

Identify which kind of earnings problem you have

Employee wages are missing or recorded incorrectly

Employers report employee wages to SSA. Check whether the name and Social Security number on your W-2 match your SSA record and whether the employer reported the correct amount. A name change not reflected in SSA records, an incorrect name or number on the W-2, or an employer reporting error can prevent wages from being credited correctly. SSA explains that wages reported with a name/number combination it cannot match may not be credited to the worker’s record.

SSA reported in an April 15, 2021 release that approximately 10 percent of W-2s it received each year initially had mismatched name/SSN combinations. That is a historical figure from the 2021 release, not a current mismatch rate. See SSA’s 2021 release.

Self-employment income is missing

Self-employed workers report earnings and pay applicable taxes directly to the IRS. Review the tax return for the year and confirm that the income was reported on the appropriate return. SSA says self-employed people usually need at least $400 in net earnings for Social Security credits, although an optional method may allow credits below that amount. See SSA’s credits guidance.

Earnings appear that are not yours

Contact SSA to request removal or correction of earnings assigned to you by mistake. SSA may ask you to verify your identity, sign a declaration under penalty of perjury, submit Form SSA-7008, or provide other documentation. Bring copies of filed tax returns for the years involved if you have them. If you suspect identity theft, SSA directs people to the Federal Trade Commission for reporting and identity-protection steps; begin at IdentityTheft.gov.

Gather evidence before asking for a correction

Collect documents that show the earnings and the correct identity, employer, or tax reporting for the year in question. Useful evidence can include:

If you do not have wage documents, write down the employer’s name and location, dates worked, amount earned, and the name and Social Security number used at the time. SSA says the process can take time and may require you or the agency to contact the employer.

Form SSA-7008 is titled “Request for Correction of Earnings Record.” It asks for the years and employers involved, the correct wage amounts, supporting evidence, and separate information about self-employment earnings. If wage evidence is unavailable, the form asks you to explain why in the remarks section. Get the current form at SSA-7008.

Choose the correction route that fits the error

Problem Who reports or corrects it What to do
Employee wages missing or wrong Your employer reports wages; SSA maintains the earnings record Ask the employer to check its report. If the W-2 itself is wrong, the employer should file Form W-2c. You can also request an SSA earnings-record correction with your evidence.
Self-employment earnings missing or wrong You report earnings to the IRS on your tax return; SSA uses covered earnings information for your record Check the filed return and contact SSA about correcting its record. If the tax return needs correction, use the applicable IRS process as well.
Earnings belong to another person SSA reviews and corrects its record Contact SSA with identity information and supporting documents; ask whether it needs Form SSA-7008 or additional evidence.

If an employer submitted the wrong W-2

The employer—not the employee—should correct its W-2 reporting by filing Form W-2c, electronically or on paper. SSA says you do not need to make the W-2 correction yourself if your employer submitted the W-2c. Ask the employer to confirm that it filed the correction and keep copies of the W-2, W-2c, and related records. See SSA’s W-2c instructions for employers.

If you need to contact SSA

Eligible users can request an earnings-record correction through my Social Security. If online service is unavailable or unsuitable, SSA’s FAQ lists the national number as 1-800-772-1213 and TTY as 1-800-325-0778. For earnings that are not yours, SSA also describes local-office assistance and appointment scheduling. Check SSA’s current earnings-record correction FAQ and guidance on earnings that are not yours before calling or visiting, since contact and appointment procedures can change.

Know the ordinary deadline—and why older years may still qualify

The usual limit for correcting an earnings record is three years, three months, and 15 days after the end of the taxable year in which the wages were paid. SSA lists exceptions, including cases supported by IRS-filed tax returns, employee omissions from processed employer reports or missing reports, errors evident from SSA’s own processed records, and wages an employer reported as paid but that are absent from the worker’s record. See SSA’s earnings-record time-limit guidance.

Federal regulation 20 CFR § 404.822 allows a correction after the ordinary period when satisfactory evidence establishes that the record is wrong and an applicable exception is met. The rules distinguish wage cases from self-employment tax-return cases; for example, a post-deadline self-employment return may allow SSA to remove or reduce recorded earnings, but not increase them. Whether an older year can be changed depends on the facts, evidence, and exception—not merely on the age of the record.

What to expect after you submit a request

Provide a clear year-by-year account of what the record shows, what it should show, and which documents support your request. Keep copies of everything you submit and note the date and method of contact. SSA may need time to review evidence or contact an employer, and a request is not a guarantee that the record will be changed. If your case involves corrected tax reporting, coordinate with the employer or IRS as appropriate while SSA reviews its earnings record.
