A useful quarterly tracker separates revenue growth, margins, demand indicators, cash generation, delivery capacity, and management guidance—and records each company’s definitions, fiscal period, and accounting basis so unlike figures are not mistaken for comparable ones.
How do I track IT services companies’ quarterly results?
Build one row per company per reported quarter. Use issuer earnings releases, financial statements, investor presentations, and webcasts as primary sources; retain a direct link to the release and any reconciliation. Record the following context alongside the numbers:
- Fiscal period: quarter-end date and the company’s fiscal-year and quarter label.
- Publication date: when the results were released.
- Reporting basis: currency and accounting standard, such as IFRS, plus whether each measure is reported or adjusted.
- Metric basis: the issuer’s definition and whether a measure covers the quarter, full year, or trailing twelve months (TTM).
Fiscal calendars differ, so “Q4” alone is not enough to establish that two companies reported comparable periods. Keep reported-currency growth and constant-currency growth in separate fields, and preserve segment, service-type, geography, and industry breakdowns where disclosed.
A practical quarterly tracker
| Area | What to record | What to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue and mix | Reported revenue; year-over-year and sequential growth; constant-currency growth | Currency, calculation basis, and segment, service, geography, or industry mix |
| Profitability | Operating income and margin; net income; diluted EPS | Reported and adjusted values separately, with one-off adjustments and reconciliations |
| Demand and future work | Bookings or new bookings; book-to-bill; backlog or remaining performance obligations | Issuer definition and quarterly, annual, or TTM period basis |
| Cash and capital | Operating cash flow; free cash flow if reported; cash balance; cash conversion | Company definition, period, and denominator for each ratio |
| Delivery and workforce | Utilization; onsite/offshore mix; headcount; attrition; hiring or skill data | Whether trainees are included, and whether the measure is utilization or effort mix |
| Guidance and narrative | Forward revenue or margin guidance and management’s explanation of changes | Publication date, assumptions, and attribution to management |
What are the key metrics for IT services companies?
Revenue growth and business mix
Revenue growth is most useful when its basis is clear. Compare reported revenue with the same quarter a year earlier, then check sequential movement for more recent momentum. Constant-currency growth can help isolate exchange-rate effects, but it is issuer-calculated rather than a standardized accounting measure. Wipro says it translates current-period IT Services revenue using prior-period exchange rates and notes that divestitures can affect comparable growth; Infosys likewise describes converting current-period local-currency revenue at prior-period exchange rates. See Wipro’s Q3 FY2026 results release and Infosys’s Q4 FY2026 metrics for their respective presentations.
#1 Best Overall
Mix matters when interpreting growth and margins. Accenture’s FY2026 Q4 release reported $18.68 billion in revenue and 7% local-currency year-over-year growth, while also presenting revenue by consulting and managed services, geography, and industry group. These are dated company results, not an industry benchmark. The release is available as an SEC-hosted exhibit.
Operating margin, net income, and EPS
Record operating income and operating margin alongside net income and diluted earnings per share. If the company publishes adjusted figures, put them in distinct columns rather than substituting them for the accounting measure. Keep the reconciliation and identify any one-off adjustment, including its stated amount and period. This lets a reader see whether a reported change reflects underlying operations, a particular adjustment, or both.
Wipro’s release for the quarter ended December 31, 2025, illustrates the distinction: it reported a 17.6% IT services operating margin and separately discussed an adjusted view for a specified labor-code effect. The release also reported net income and EPS. Treat those values as period-specific examples, not targets for other firms. Wipro’s Q3 FY2026 results include the company’s presentation and related materials.
Bookings, book-to-bill, and backlog
Bookings or new bookings indicate work awarded or contracted under the issuer’s definition; book-to-bill relates bookings to revenue; backlog or remaining performance obligations represent work the company reports as future contracted activity. None is recognized revenue simply because it has been booked or included in backlog. Definitions, cancellation terms, timing, and calculation methods can vary, so record the company’s wording and whether the figure is quarterly, annual, or TTM.
Rank #3
Accenture reported $22.17 billion in Q4 FY2026 bookings and a quarterly book-to-bill of 1.2. CGI’s Q3 FY2026 investor results page reported $31.79 billion in backlog and 108.1% TTM book-to-bill, while showing bookings and book-to-bill on both quarterly and TTM bases. Cognizant reported $28.4 billion in TTM bookings and approximately 1.3x book-to-bill in its Q4 and FY2025 results. These figures have different periods and company definitions; they should not be ranked as if they were the same measure. Consult CGI’s Q3 FY2026 results and Cognizant’s Q4 and FY2025 results for the issuer context.
Cash generation and conversion
Track operating cash flow and cash balance, and include free cash flow only when the company reports it and defines its calculation. A cash conversion ratio is meaningful only with its denominator and period attached. For example, CGI reports cash provided by operating activities as a percentage of revenue and on a TTM basis; Wipro reported operating cash flow as a percentage of net income for its cited quarter. Those ratios answer different questions and should not be directly compared without accounting for their definitions and periods.
Utilization and workforce capacity
Utilization can help show how much delivery capacity is being used, but the denominator matters. Check whether trainees are included and distinguish employee utilization from effort mix. Infosys’s Q4 FY2026 metrics show utilization both including and excluding trainees; the figure excluding trainees was 83.0% for the quarter ended March 31, 2026. The same materials present effort mix, employee totals, and TTM attrition. Cognizant’s Q4 and FY2025 results include headcount and TTM voluntary attrition. Compare these measures only after aligning their definitions and dates.
How do you compare IT services companies?
- Start with each issuer’s own trend. Compare the latest quarter with that company’s prior-year quarter, then its preceding quarter. This separates company momentum from differences in business mix and reporting choices.
- Align the periods. Use quarter-end dates and fiscal labels to establish whether periods overlap. Do not assume two issuers’ Q4s cover the same calendar months.
- Align the currency basis. Compare reported-currency growth with reported-currency growth and constant-currency growth with constant-currency growth. Retain both where available.
- Separate accounting from adjusted measures. Keep IFRS or other reported accounting results distinct from issuer-defined adjusted figures, and read the reconciliation before drawing conclusions.
- Check demand metric definitions and timing. Confirm whether bookings and book-to-bill are quarterly, full-year, or TTM, and how the issuer defines backlog or remaining performance obligations.
- Compare business mix before margins. Consulting and managed-services exposure, industry mix, geography, and delivery model can differ. A margin comparison without that context may mislead.
What can make the numbers misleading?
- Currency effects: Constant-currency calculations are not necessarily identical across issuers. Wipro and Infosys each describe translating current-period revenue using prior-period exchange rates, but an issuer’s specific methodology and any divestiture effects still need to be checked.
- Adjusted metrics: Wipro states that its key metrics and non-GAAP measures are not based on a comprehensive set of accounting rules, may differ from other companies’ measures, and should not replace IFRS figures. Read financial statements and reconciliations alongside adjusted measures.
- Bookings versus recognized sales: Bookings, backlog, and book-to-bill are indicators of awarded or future work, not promises that the same amount will become revenue in a particular period.
- Utilization denominators: Including trainees can change the reported rate. Note the inclusion rule rather than comparing percentages at face value.
- Management commentary: Guidance and explanations are statements by management at a particular date, not verified outcomes. Record the assumptions and attribution, then compare later results with that dated outlook.
Where should you find official quarterly results?
Use the issuer’s investor-relations earnings page for its release, financial statements, presentations, and webcast. Regulatory filings can provide an official version of a release or detailed financial disclosures; Accenture’s cited FY2026 Q4 release, for example, is hosted as an SEC filing exhibit. Wipro directs readers to its investor section for IFRS results and segment reports. Store the exact release link with each tracker row, because metric definitions and guidance can change from quarter to quarter.
