What IFSCA Authorization Means for Investors and Financial Firms

IFSCA authorization applies to a specific financial entity and activity in an Indian IFSC. Here’s how to check its current permission—and what that status does not guarantee.

IFSCA authorization is permission for a specified financial activity by a particular entity in an International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in India. It is not a blanket approval of a company’s entire group or every product it offers, and it does not guarantee investment returns or protect investors from losses. To check a firm’s status, search IFSCA’s official directory for the exact legal entity, activity, authorization number, validity dates and any remarks.

What IFSCA authorization means

The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) says it was established on April 27, 2020, under the International Financial Services Centres Authority Act, 2019. It is the unified authority for developing and regulating financial products, services and institutions in India’s IFSCs. IFSCA identifies GIFT IFSC as the country’s first IFSC. Before IFSCA was established, the Reserve Bank of India, Securities and Exchange Board of India, Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority, and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India regulated business in the IFSC. IFSCA’s official site

An authorization relates to a defined entity, activity and regulatory framework. Its scope and conditions depend on the permission granted and the rules for that sector. A familiar brand name alone does not prove that a particular legal entity has permission for the service being marketed.

What authorization requires of financial firms

Permission depends on the activity

For example, IFSCA’s Capital Market Intermediaries regulation text lists activities including broker-dealing, clearing, credit rating, custody, debenture trusteeship, depository participation, distribution, ESG ratings and data products, investment advice, investment banking and research. An IFSC unit carrying out a covered activity must obtain registration, subject to the applicable rules and exemptions. A unit conducting more than one activity may obtain unified registration in the manner specified by IFSCA. A firm should check the rules for its exact activity and status rather than assume that a broad label settles the requirement. IFSCA legal database

The legal database notes that the Official Gazette text prevails if it conflicts with the database copy. For a legal conclusion about a particular firm, check the relevant Gazette notification and current sector-specific rules.

IFSCA permission and the SEZ Letter of Approval are separate

In a circular dated April 3, 2025, IFSCA said regulated entities should maintain both valid, subsisting IFSCA permission and a separate Letter of Approval under the Special Economic Zones Act, 2005. The circular warns that expiry of the SEZ Letter of Approval or failure to renew it on time may lead to enforcement action, including cancellation of the entity’s relevant registration, license, recognition, authorization, permission or approval. How investors can check a firm’s authorization

  1. Open IFSCA’s entity directory. Search using the entity name, category or subcategory.
  2. Match the result to the exact legal entity named in the firm’s offer or disclosures. Do not assume that a group company, affiliate or similarly named business shares its permission.
  3. Check that the listed registration, authorization or license covers the activity the firm is offering.
  4. Compare the registration or authorization number and the validity-from and validity-to dates. Check the registered address, website and contact details as useful identity checks.
  5. Read the directory’s remarks for any qualification or limitation relevant to the service. If the listing is unclear or does not match the firm’s claim, seek clarification from the firm and verify against the applicable regulatory material.

The directory is a point-in-time record. Check it close to when you are assessing or using a service; a past authorization claim does not establish current status.

What authorization does not tell investors

IFSCA says its 2024 Listing Regulations were formulated to protect investor interests and support fair, efficient and transparent markets. These are regulatory objectives, not a promise that an authorized firm or listed product is risk-free, suitable for you or profitable. Authorization does not establish guaranteed returns, principal protection or the suitability of an investment for an individual. Rules and remedies can differ by activity and product. Assess the investment separately using its disclosures: consider its risks, fees, liquidity and fit with your circumstances. A firm’s authorization status addresses regulatory permission, not those investment characteristics.

How to compare two firms’ IFSCA status

Check What to compare
Legal entity Whether the directory entry is for the same legal entity named in each firm’s offer.
Activity and permission Whether the permission type covers the specific service each firm is marketing.
Authorization number The number shown for each entity in the directory.
Validity The listed validity-from and validity-to dates; confirm the permission is current.
Remarks Any qualifications or limitations that could affect the service being offered.

These checks compare regulatory status only. They do not rank the firms’ products or establish which investment is more appropriate.

IFSCA’s reported authorization count

IFSCA reported 1,260 registrations and authorisations as of June 2026, according to its official site. That dated, authority-wide figure is not a live count of currently valid permissions and does not confirm the status of any individual firm. Use the directory entry for the entity you are checking.
