To buy listed Indian shares directly, you generally need a bank account for money, a trading account with a SEBI-registered stockbroker to place orders, and a demat account with a registered depository participant (DP) to hold shares electronically. Complete the provider’s KYC and account paperwork, check all applicable charges and terms, and understand investment risks before adding funds or selecting shares.
What a demat account does—and what it does not do
A demat account holds securities in electronic form. It is not the account you use to place a buy or sell order: that is the trading account, provided through a stockbroker. A bank account is used to pay or receive trade-related funds. These accounts work together, but they have different functions.
India has two depositories, NSDL and CDSL. Investors access their depository services through DPs. SEBI explains the roles of depositories and DPs in its investor resources.
How to open the accounts
-
Choose a broker and DP
Check that the broker is registered with SEBI and verify the exchange where it is a registered member. Check the DP’s registration as well. A familiar brand name or social-media recommendation is not a substitute for checking the specific legal entity and its terms. NSE’s guidance explains how to find and verify an intermediary: NSE investor guidance.

Complete KYC and account paperwork
The stockbroker carries out initial client KYC and uploads client details to the KYC Registration Agency (KRA) system, according to SEBI’s FAQ. The exact documents and digital or in-person verification steps depend on the intermediary and your circumstances; confirm them directly before applying. NSE advises investors to complete KYC and agreement forms and obtain copies. SEBI’s FAQ is available at SEBI Investor FAQs.
-
Read the terms and keep copies
Before signing, review the account-opening forms, agreements, authorizations, and fee schedule. Ask for copies and save them with your account records. Do not sign blank forms or delivery slips. Pay particular attention to the scope of any power of attorney or other authorization.

Check charges before funding
SEBI’s Investor Charter states that there is no charge for opening a demat account and no minimum balance requirement for a demat account. That does not mean every service or transaction is free: brokerage, account-related services, and other fees may apply. Review the current tariff and terms for the provider you choose. SEBI advises investors to note applicable account charges, brokerage, and fees in its Do’s and Don’ts.
-
Link or designate the bank account and protect access
Follow the provider’s instructions for the bank account used for trade-related payments and receipts. Keep passwords and authentication codes private, and review your demat statements and transaction records. Consider making a nomination where applicable.

How to compare providers
There is no provider ranking established here. Compare the specific intermediary on the points that affect your use:
- SEBI registration and relevant exchange membership for the broker, plus the DP’s registration.
- The complete, current schedule of account, transaction, and service charges.
- The KYC and account-opening process, including how you obtain copies of agreements.
- Platform and customer-support features you actually need.
- Terms for authorizations, statements, and grievance handling.
Confirm details with the provider rather than assuming that a fee or process is the same across brokers.

Before placing your first order
Account approval only gives you the means to transact; it does not tell you what to buy. Before investing, understand the risks and features of the securities you are considering, and think about your investment objectives and risk appetite. SEBI’s investor guidance cautions against relying on hot tips or promises of guaranteed returns and says, “Don’t borrow money for investment.” See SEBI’s investor Do’s and Don’ts.
Do not treat a share as suitable simply because it is available in your trading app. This guide explains account setup, not an individualized recommendation to buy any stock.
