Regular-hours trading runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time for the core sessions described by Nasdaq and NYSE. Hours, eligible securities, order rules, and handling of unfilled orders vary by venue and broker, so check your broker’s policies before placing an extended-hours order.
What is pre-market trading?
Pre-market trading is an extended-hours session before the regular trading session. “Extended-hours trading” is the SEC’s umbrella term for trading before or after regular hours. Pre-market access is not identical across exchanges, trading systems, brokers, or securities; an investor’s actual access depends on the broker and the venue handling the order.
For Nasdaq, the weekday schedule described in a January 2026 Federal Register filing is 4:00 a.m.–9:30 a.m. ET for pre-market, 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET for the regular market, and 4:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. ET for post-market. The filing also discusses a proposed expansion, which is distinct from the schedule it describes. Nasdaq filing in the Federal Register
NYSE’s core session is 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET, but its pre-opening and early-session arrangements vary by tape. For Tape A, orders can be entered from 6:30 a.m. ET and queue for the 9:30 a.m. opening auction. For Tapes B and C, pre-opening orders queue until 7:00 a.m.; the early session then runs from 7:00 to 9:30 a.m. ET. These differences are one reason not to assume Nasdaq’s 4:00 a.m. start applies across U.S. exchanges. NYSE trading hours and calendars

How does pre-market compare with regular-hours trading?
| Factor | Pre-market | Regular hours |
|---|---|---|
| Access and hours | Before the core session; start time and availability depend on the venue, broker, and security. Nasdaq’s stated weekday schedule starts at 4:00 a.m. ET; NYSE’s arrangements differ by tape. | Core session is 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET for Nasdaq and NYSE. |
| Trading interest and liquidity | Generally less trading interest; some stocks may not trade. Orders can be partially filled or remain unfilled. | Generally more trading interest and price competition than in extended hours. |
| Quotes and spreads | Quotes may be unavailable and bid-ask spreads are generally wider, which can make execution less favorable. | Greater trading interest generally supports more price competition, though no execution price is guaranteed. |
| Price movement and reliability | Limited activity can produce larger price fluctuations. Prices can differ from the prior regular-session close and the next opening price. | Prices reflect trading during the core session; they are not a guarantee of a later price. |
| Order types and routing | Accepted securities, order types, and routing depend on the broker and venue. Many firms accept only limit orders in extended hours. | Order types and routing depend on the broker and market rules. |
| Unfilled orders | Whether an unfilled order is canceled or carried into the regular session depends on the broker and venue. | Order duration and handling depend on the instructions and broker. |
The SEC and FINRA describe reduced trading interest, wider spreads, price fluctuations, and venue differences as key extended-hours risks. FINRA’s notice discusses these risks as a model disclosure; it is not a promise that every security or broker will behave identically. FINRA Notice to Members 00-07

Why can pre-market prices move sharply?
Less liquidity can magnify individual orders
With fewer interested buyers and sellers, an order may have less opportunity to meet a matching order at a nearby price. Some stocks may not trade at all during a particular extended-hours period. A trade can also fill only in part, or not fill, even if the displayed price appears close to the limit you set.
Spreads can raise the effective cost
The bid is the highest displayed price a buyer is offering; the ask is the lowest displayed price a seller is offering. The difference is the bid-ask spread. When extended-hours trading interest falls, that spread can widen or quotes may disappear. A buy order may therefore cost more than a recent trade price suggests, while a sale may bring less.

News can meet thin trading
Companies sometimes release important news or financial information outside regular hours. If fewer orders are available when that news arrives, prices can move substantially. A pre-market quote or last trade is not necessarily a reliable indication of where the stock will trade once the regular session opens.
Trading systems may show different prices
Extended-hours systems are not linked in the way investors might expect. Two systems operating at the same time can display different prices, so a quote on one platform does not establish that another venue offers the same execution.

What are the risks of trading before the market opens?
- No execution: An order may not find a counterparty and can remain unfilled.
- Partial execution: Only some shares may trade, leaving the rest unfilled.
- Unfavorable pricing: A wide spread or a price move can make execution less attractive than during the core session.
- Price mismatch: The extended-hours price may differ from the regular-session close or the next opening price.
- Venue mismatch: Prices can differ across extended-hours systems.
- Order-handling differences: Brokers may restrict securities, order types, routing, or what happens to an order that remains open at the session’s end.
A limit order can set the worst price you are willing to accept: for a buy, the limit is the maximum; for a sell, it is the minimum. It does not guarantee execution. If your limit is more attractive than available counterparties are willing to trade, the order may not fill.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether to use pre-market
- Confirm access and the session window. Check your broker’s extended-hours trading page or order ticket for the specific security and the hours it supports. The SEC advises investors to contact their brokerage firms to determine if and when extended-hours sessions are available.
- Review order restrictions. Verify which order types and routing options are accepted. Do not assume an order entered outside regular hours will be handled like one entered during the core session.
- Check the quote, not just the last trade. Look at both bid and ask, the spread, and whether quotes are actually available. A last-trade price may be stale or from a different system.
- Choose a limit with the execution trade-off in mind. A limit can cap the price you accept, but a strict limit may leave the order unfilled if the market does not reach it.
- Find out what happens at 9:30 a.m. Check whether any remainder is canceled or carried into regular hours, and whether you need to cancel it yourself.
Pre-market can be useful when a trader needs to respond before the core session, for example after company news, but the possibility of wider spreads, sharp price changes, and no fill is part of that choice. There is no universally better session: the relevant comparison is whether the available access, execution conditions, and order rules suit the specific trade.
