A practical U.S. baseline from the EPA is a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. For frequent, heavy smoke, the EPA cites a more conservative recommendation of CADR equal to the room area.
How big an air purifier do you need?
Use the tobacco-smoke CADR, not a room-size claim alone, to compare how much filtered air a portable cleaner delivers for smoke particles. Measure the room’s length and width in feet and multiply them. For an open-plan space, include the full area the cleaner is expected to serve.
- Measure the room or open area in square feet.
- Find the purifier’s tobacco-smoke CADR. Smoke CADR is the relevant rating for smoke particles; do not substitute its pollen or dust CADR.
- For wildfire smoke, use the EPA baseline of at least two-thirds the room area as smoke CADR. The EPA’s example is a 120-square-foot room, which calls for a CADR of at least 80.
- If smoke is frequently heavy, consider the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers recommendation cited by EPA: a smoke CADR equal to the room area.
- Size up for ceilings higher than eight feet, heavy smoke, or a large open area. If one unit cannot serve the space, consider multiple cleaners.
These are sizing rules of thumb, not guarantees of a particular indoor particle concentration. EPA’s wildfire smoke guidance and home air-cleaner guidance explain the recommendations.
Which filtration technology should you choose?
Mechanical HEPA or pleated filters
A mechanical cleaner draws air through a filter that traps particles. EPA says HEPA and other higher-efficiency pleated mechanical filters effectively trap smoke particles and do not produce ozone. A HEPA label can help identify a particle-filtering device, but the unit still needs sufficient smoke CADR for the space.

Ionizers and other electronic cleaners
EPA does not recommend electronic air cleaners for smoke removal because their effectiveness is unclear and they may produce ozone. Its wildfire guidance also does not recommend photocatalytic oxidation, hydroxyl generators, or UV-containing devices for removing smoke. Avoid ozone generators in occupied spaces: ozone can irritate airways, and concentrations that stay within public-health standards do not effectively remove many indoor pollutants. For wildfire filtration, EPA advises using CARB-certified air cleaners, which produce little or no ozone. Follow the current certification and operating guidance.
EPA does not certify or recommend specific brands or models, so compare the device’s published specifications rather than treating an agency mention as an endorsement.

What should you compare beyond CADR?
A purifier’s published capacity only helps if you can use it as needed and maintain it. Check these practical details before buying:
- Noise at the needed setting: During smoky conditions, EPA advises running a portable cleaner continuously on its highest fan setting if possible. A quieter lower setting may be easier to live with, but may deliver less filtered air.
- Replacement-filter availability and cost: Smoke can load filters faster than ordinary use. Check that replacement filters are available and budget for them; inspect the filter and replace it as directed or sooner if loaded.
- Room-size claim versus smoke CADR: A room-size label without an identified smoke CADR is harder to compare with a sizing target.
- Actual space and placement: A unit sized for a closed bedroom may not serve an adjoining open area. Consider the full area and ceiling height.
EPA’s clean-room guidance recommends keeping windows and doors closed when outdoor air is smoky where practical, reducing indoor particle sources such as candles, smoking, vaping, and aerosols, and checking filters for loading.

Can your HVAC system or a DIY box fan help?
Central HVAC filtration
If your home has forced-air heating or cooling, a central filter can provide filtration while the system fan runs. EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher, or the highest rating the system can accommodate. Do not install a higher-efficiency filter unless the system can handle it; check the system manufacturer’s instructions or ask an HVAC professional if compatibility is uncertain.
DIY box-fan filter
A box fan fitted with MERV 13 filters can be an option when a commercial cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable, but performance depends substantially on the design and construction. In controlled-chamber tests summarized by EPA, smoke CADR varied across designs:

These are EPA laboratory results for the listed designs, not guaranteed results for every build. In the tested design, adding a shroud increased CADR by 40%. EPA generally prefers commercial cleaners with known CADR when predictable room sizing matters. Its DIY air-cleaner research summary describes the test results.
Portable and DIY cleaners serve rooms or zones, while HVAC filtration can circulate air through the home when the central fan runs. Depending on the system and layout, multiple well-placed room cleaners may be as effective and may cost less to operate than continuous central filtration with a high-efficiency filter.

How to operate a purifier during smoky conditions
- Run the portable cleaner continuously on its highest fan setting if possible.
- Keep windows and doors closed when outdoor air is smoky, where practical.
- Reduce indoor sources of particles, including candles, smoking, vaping, and aerosols.
- Check filters for loading and replace them as needed.
