Measure a campaign against its goal: use tracked conversions for sales, brand-lift measures for awareness, and a controlled lift study when you need to estimate whether exposure caused extra conversions. Report the method, timeframe, costs, and gaps alongside the result.
Start with the decision the campaign should inform
Before choosing a metric, write down what the campaign is meant to change and what decision the result will support. Objectives may include awareness, reaching new audiences, trust or reputation, online sales, or leads. A sales metric alone cannot fully evaluate a campaign designed to change awareness; engagement alone cannot establish sales impact.
In the IAB’s 2025 survey release, awareness and reach were among the most common creator-campaign goals, alongside online sales and conversions. Separately, 40% of surveyed buyers ranked overall ROI as their top KPI. That is a report of buyer priorities, not evidence that campaigns typically earn a particular return. Awareness, consideration, or reputation
Reach and impressions describe delivery: how many people or exposures were recorded. To assess whether perceptions changed, use an appropriate brand-lift measure, such as awareness, recall, consideration, or purchase intent, when available. A survey’s exposed and comparison groups, question wording, and sample size affect how to interpret the result. Brand lift answers a different question from sales attribution.

Engagement and creative response
Track interactions and engagement rate by creator and post to see which content drew a response. These are useful diagnostic measures of attention and creative performance, but they are not profit measures unless a separate, defensible model connects them to financial outcomes.
Sales or leads
Use creator-specific tracking links, discount codes, or platform and ecommerce integrations. Report recorded conversions and their conversion value alongside the campaign cost. State the tracking setup and attribution window so readers know what counts as a conversion.

Additional conversions caused by exposure
Attributed conversions and incremental conversions are not interchangeable. A link, code, or platform integration records conversions associated with a creator under its configured rules. A treatment/control lift design estimates how many more conversions occurred among those exposed than would have occurred under the comparison condition. The latter is a causal estimate for the tested design, not a guarantee that every recorded conversion was caused by the campaign.
Longer-term customer value
If customer value extends beyond the campaign period, a model can incorporate contribution margin, retention, and a stated horizon. The American Marketing Association’s calculator considers 30-, 90-, or 180-day horizons, among other inputs. Such a result is modeled lifetime value, not observed campaign revenue; its meaning depends on the assumptions entered. American Marketing Association influencer marketing ROI calculator

Compare the measurement options
| Method | Best question answered | What it can show | Limitation to report |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform reporting, links, codes, or integrations | What conversions were recorded under this tracking setup? | Practical creator-level attribution when tracking is used consistently. | Some journeys are missed, and attribution-window rules matter. Associated conversions are not automatically incremental. |
| Brand-lift survey | Did awareness, recall, consideration, or another perception measure change? | An outcome suited to upper-funnel goals. | Survey design, exposed/control definitions, and sample size affect interpretation. |
| Conversion-lift experiment | How many additional conversions or how much additional value arose in treatment versus control? | An estimate of causal incremental effect within the tested design. | It requires an eligible setup and sufficient conversion capture; uncertainty and generalizability beyond the study conditions must be considered. |
| Earned media value (EMV) | What benchmarked media value is assigned to exposure or engagement? | A comparison estimate when the benchmark and weighting are disclosed. | It is estimated media-equivalent value, not revenue or profit. |
| Contribution or lifetime-value model | What longer-term value might acquired customers produce? | A way to make margin, retention, and time-horizon assumptions visible. | Outputs depend on model assumptions and are not observed campaign results. |

Calculate financial return without blurring revenue and profit
Use a clearly labeled cost denominator that includes the campaign costs relevant to the decision. For example, define whether spend includes creator fees, production, paid amplification, agency support, and other campaign expenses. Apply the same cost definition when comparing creators or campaigns.
Rank #4
- Attributed ROAS: attributed conversion value divided by campaign spend. This is a revenue-to-spend measure under the stated attribution setup; it is not profit ROI.
- Profit-oriented ROI: (incremental or attributable contribution profit minus campaign cost) divided by campaign cost. State whether contribution profit is measured or modeled and how the conversions were attributed.
For its documented conversion-lift method, Google defines incremental conversions as treatment conversions minus control conversions, and incremental ROAS as incremental conversion value divided by total ad spend. These figures depend on the experiment’s population, timing, conversion capture, and design; they should not be presented as universal results. Google Ads: About Conversion Lift

- The campaign objective and the decision the result is meant to inform.
- The outcome metric and supporting diagnostics, with definitions and denominators.
- The data source, reporting date range, attribution window, and tracking configuration.
- Creator- and platform-level results, total costs, and the cost categories included.
- For a lift study, the holdout or control design, treatment definition, and study period.
- Missing-data risks and other limits, such as purchases that tracking could not capture.
- For EMV, the benchmark and weighting; label the figure as estimated media-equivalent value.
- For a customer-value model, the margin, retention, and time-horizon assumptions.
Links may miss in-app purchases or cross-device journeys; codes miss purchases by people who do not use them; integrations depend on retailer or platform tracking. Attribution is therefore partial. In IAB UK member content, Alicia Van der Meer of Kolsquare describes attribution as “honest reporting on partial visibility, not a complete picture, and a good report says so.” Treat that as practical commentary from a vendor contributor, not an official IAB standard. Why there is no universal creator ROI target
Creator measurement remains fragmented, and proxy metrics can create the impression of ROI without establishing financial return. The IAB’s January 2026 overview discusses these measurement challenges. IAB creator economy measurement landscape
In an IAB and Advertiser Perceptions survey of 453 creator-ad buyers in 2025, 39% selected proving ROI as one of their top three measurement and attribution challenges, while 34% selected attributing sales to creators. For primary creator-marketing KPI sources, 55% named ad-platform reporting, 49% internal or first-party analytics, and 37% internal business KPIs or sales data; respondents could select multiple sources. These are survey responses, not campaign performance benchmarks. IAB 2025 Creator Economy Ad Spend Report (PDF)
