How to Choose a Bank for an FCNR(B) Deposit

Choose an FCNR(B) bank by matching the currency and tenor to your plans, then compare dated rates alongside early-closure, funding, maturity and insurance terms.

Choose the bank whose written terms fit your currency, intended holding period, access needs and funding route—not simply the bank showing the highest rate. Compare offers only after matching currency, tenor, amount band and rate-card date, then check early-closure costs, maturity instructions, repatriation and the treatment of your specific deposit under DICGC rules.

Start with the currency you want at maturity

An FCNR(B) account is a foreign-currency term deposit. The currency you choose determines the denomination of the principal and interest payable at maturity. That makes your likely use of the proceeds the first decision: consider whether you expect to spend them abroad, remit them, or convert them to rupees.

This differs from an NRE deposit, which is denominated in rupees. Do not compare the headline rates of FCNR(B) and NRE deposits as if they were equivalent: the currency exposure and maturity proceeds differ. Canara Bank’s June 2026 comparison of NRE, FCNR(B) and a forward-covered variant illustrates useful comparison dimensions, but its promotional or tax descriptions are not a substitute for the contract or personal advice: Canara Bank’s NRI deposit information.

Then check which currencies the bank actually accepts for the product and whether it can pay maturity proceeds in the way you need. For example, Federal Bank lists USD, GBP, EUR, JPY, AUD, CHF, CAD, SGD, NZD and HKD, and describes certain funding routes; availability and operational requirements should be confirmed against its current terms: Federal Bank FCNR deposit.

Compare rates only on a like-for-like basis

Rates change, and an offer for one currency or maturity is not a meaningful benchmark for another. Request each bank’s current rate card and compare the same currency, tenor, amount band, interest convention and effective date. Confirm whether the quoted rate applies to a new deposit or a renewal.

RBI rules limit the maximum FCNR(B) maturity to five years. The minimum and available terms, however, should be checked for the specific bank and offer. Federal Bank states a one-to-five-year period on its product page; that is its stated product range, not a promise that every tenor or currency is available at every time.

Do not treat old regulatory rate-ceiling announcements as current deposit offers. RBI’s circular index records a temporary increase in ceilings to ARR + 400 basis points for one year to under three years and ARR + 500 basis points for three to five years, effective December 6, 2024 through March 31, 2025. That relaxation expired; banks’ actual rates may be below applicable ceilings and vary by date and product. See the RBI circular and RBI circular index for context.

Check how interest is calculated and paid

Ask whether interest is paid out or compounded, how often it is credited, and how the bank calculates the final partial period. RBI directions and bank product descriptions specify a 360-day basis and 180-day intervals for FCNR(B) interest; the selected bank’s current terms determine the applicable payout convention. Federal Bank says its FCNR(B) interest is calculated on a 360-day year and paid at 180-day intervals, then for the remaining actual number of days. Verify that detail for the offer you are considering: Federal Bank FCNR deposit terms.

Read early-withdrawal terms before booking

An FCNR(B) deposit is a term commitment. RBI directions require scheduled commercial banks to permit premature withdrawal on the depositor’s request, but no interest is payable if the deposit is closed before the scheme’s minimum stipulated period. After that threshold, the rate used and any penalty or cost recovery depend on the bank’s disclosed terms.

Before opening the deposit, obtain written answers to these questions:

  • What is the minimum period that must elapse before any interest is payable?
  • How will the bank calculate interest if the deposit is closed early?
  • What penalty applies, and how is it calculated?
  • Can the bank recover swap costs, and under what circumstances?
  • What happens if you convert an FCNR(B) deposit to an NRE deposit before maturity?

RBI permits banks, at their discretion, to levy a penalty to recover swap costs, and conversion between FCNR(B) and NRE before maturity is subject to premature-withdrawal penalties. Ask for the policy at booking rather than relying on a general product summary. The governing rules are in the RBI Master Directions on deposits and accounts.

Make sure the funding and opening process works for you

A competitive rate is of little use if the account-opening or funding route does not fit your circumstances. Confirm with the bank:

  • Eligibility, KYC documents and whether you need an existing relationship or account.
  • Permitted funding methods and the source account or remittance requirements.
  • Minimum deposit and any amount bands that change the rate.
  • Transfer, conversion or other charges, and expected processing time.
  • Whether you can complete servicing from your country of residence.

Documentation and operational requirements are bank-specific. Ask the chosen bank for its current checklist and written instructions rather than relying on another customer’s experience.

Plan maturity, renewal and access to the proceeds

Check what happens at maturity: whether the bank pays out automatically, renews the deposit, or requires instructions from you. Ask about the payout route and currency, how to prevent an unwanted auto-renewal, and how the bank handles a deposit when instructions arrive late. RBI permits overdue renewal only at the bank’s discretion and subject to stated conditions, so do not assume an expired deposit will renew on the original terms.

If you may return to India for permanent settlement, ask how the bank will handle the deposit. RBI directions allow scheduled commercial banks, at their discretion and subject to conditions, to continue qualifying FCNR(B) deposits to maturity at the contracted rate for a depositor returning to India. The bank should explain the applicable conditions and any options for converting the proceeds to an RFC or resident rupee deposit. See the RBI Master Directions.

Also verify repatriation procedures and any loan facility you might use. Federal Bank states that principal and interest are freely repatriable and advertises loans against FCNR deposits; those are bank-published product statements, so confirm current conditions, availability, pricing and paperwork directly with the bank: Federal Bank FCNR deposit.

Ask how DICGC insurance applies to this deposit

DICGC states a maximum insurance limit of ₹5,00,000 for principal and interest per depositor, per insured bank, aggregated across branches when held in the same right and capacity. Its guide also lists “any amount due on account of any deposit received outside India” among exclusions. Because the exclusion and the way a particular FCNR(B) deposit is received and held matter, do not assume either that your deposit is covered or that it is excluded. Ask the bank to explain the treatment of your exact funding arrangement and check the DICGC guide and FAQs.

Treat tax as a personal cross-border question

Tax treatment depends on your residence status, applicable Indian law and the rules where you are tax-resident. A bank’s general statement about tax is not an individual determination. If residence, a planned return to India or tax in another country could change the outcome, get advice specific to your circumstances before choosing the deposit or maturity route.

Use this checklist to make the final choice

  1. Write down the currency you want to receive and how you expect to use the maturity proceeds.
  2. Choose a tenor you can realistically hold, then obtain same-date rate cards for the same currency, tenor and amount band.
  3. Compare interest calculation and payout conventions, plus the bank’s written early-closure and swap-cost terms.
  4. Confirm eligibility, KYC, funding method, minimum amount, charges and processing time.
  5. Get clear maturity, renewal, payout and repatriation instructions, including what changes if you return to India.
  6. Ask how DICGC’s foreign-deposit exclusion applies to your particular deposit, and seek individualized tax advice if cross-border status affects your decision.

A dated rate card can illustrate why the date and bank-specific terms matter: Bank of India’s indexed official page identifies a rate card effective July 2, 2026 and a 1% premature-withdrawal penalty after 12 months. Those are that bank’s dated terms, not a market-wide rate or universal penalty. Check the bank’s current card directly before booking: Bank of India interest rates.
