It separately affirmed a Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of a+ (Excellent). Both outlooks are stable.
What AM Best’s current ratings mean
The distinction is the rating category: A is CG’s insurer Financial Strength Rating (FSR), while a+ is its Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating (ICR). The grades are not two ways of stating the same rating. AM Best’s July 24, 2026 announcement affirms both ratings and gives each a stable outlook.
A stable outlook is AM Best’s assessment accompanying this rating action; it is not a promise that the ratings or CG’s financial condition cannot change.
Why AM Best affirmed the ratings
AM Best says the ratings reflect “CG’s balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as strongest, as well as its adequate operating performance, favourable business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management.” The statement is the agency’s rationale, not an independent verification of CG’s financial position.

The agency also says it expects risk-adjusted capitalisation to remain comfortably at the strongest level under its Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR) measure. It cites CG’s large capital base, extremely low underwriting leverage, favourable liquidity, debt-free position and conservative investment strategy as support for that assessment. The 2026 announcement does not provide a current numeric capital figure.
How CG’s ratings differ by agency
CG’s credit ratings page lists ratings from three agencies. Its displayed AM Best entry is dated July 25, 2025, so the newer July 2026 AM Best announcement is the relevant source for the current AM Best action.
Rank #2
| Agency | Rating shown | Outlook | Date shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moody’s | A2 | Stable | October 23, 2025 |
| Fitch | A+ | Stable | October 19, 2025 |
| AM Best | A (FSR) | Stable | July 24, 2026; latest announcement |
| AM Best | a+ (Long-Term ICR) | Stable | July 24, 2026; latest announcement |
Each agency uses its own scale, and an insurer-strength rating is a different category from an issuer-credit rating. A grade-only comparison can therefore give a misleading impression of which rating is “higher.”

AM Best’s October 19, 2023 announcement reported an FSR of A+ (Superior) and an ICR of aa- (Superior), both with stable outlooks. Those historical grades differ from the 2026 grades. The available announcements do not establish the complete sequence of rating actions between those dates, so the 2026 affirmation alone should not be described as an upgrade or downgrade.
