The right place to sell video games depends on what you have, how much work you’ll do, and whether you want cash or store credit. Start by sorting and pricing each item, then compare likely proceeds after fees and shipping—not just the listed price. For U.S. sellers, eight channel options to consider are Amazon, eBay, GameStop trade-in, local sales channels, gaming-focused retailers, retro-game specialists, and other established online marketplaces. These are options to evaluate, not a ranked list: the available terms do not establish that any one always pays more or sells faster.
How to sell video games online, step by step
-
Inventory and sort your games and equipment
Record each item’s platform, exact title, edition, condition, completeness, and included accessories. Separate consoles, controllers, loose cartridges or discs, complete-in-box games, and collectible editions. Original packaging, manuals, and low wear may affect value, so note whether they’re present.

Check authenticity and working condition
For valuable retro games, check authenticity before listing. If you test a cartridge, disc, controller, or console, describe what you actually checked and the result. Don’t call an item tested or working unless you verified it.
-
Estimate realistic proceeds
Compare current offers and reliable market evidence, including completed sales where available. Then subtract marketplace fees, shipping, packaging, and optional service costs. An asking price is not a payout, and the official fee pages do not provide a universal value guide for individual games.

-
Choose a sales route for each item
Broad marketplaces may give common games and collectibles access to a wider audience, while local sales can avoid shipping. A retailer trade-in may take less listing work, and a retro specialist may reach collectors. These are channel-level trade-offs; confirm each service’s current rules, item eligibility, fees, and location coverage before relying on it.
-
Create an accurate listing
Photograph the actual item from several angles. Show wear, damage, labels, and included accessories; state the platform, edition, completeness, and condition precisely. For retro or collectible items, be especially clear about authenticity and testing.

-
Pack and fulfill shipped orders carefully
Choose protective packaging suited to the item and shipping method. Pack games and consoles to limit movement and impact, ship promptly, and provide tracking where available.

Eight places and channel types to compare
This is a practical comparison set, not a verified ranking of eight named services. Current terms for local channels, gaming-focused retailers, retro specialists, and other marketplaces vary; check availability, fees, eligibility, and geography directly before listing.
| Option | May suit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Sellers considering a broad online store for games, consoles, or accessories | Referral fee by product type, selling-plan cost, eligibility, and optional service costs |
| eBay | Sellers considering a broad marketplace for common or unusual items | Category-specific final-value and insertion fees, shipping, and account terms |
| GameStop trade-in | Sellers prioritizing a retailer transaction over listing and shipping items | Whether the product and store participate, the condition assessment, and whether cash or credit is preferable |
| Local sales channels | Sellers looking to meet buyers locally and avoid shipping an order | Local demand, safe transaction arrangements, and any platform rules or fees |
| Gaming-focused retailers | Sellers comparing retailer options for newer games | Current item acceptance, payout method, condition criteria, and shipping or store requirements |
| Retro-game specialists | Sellers with retro or collector-oriented items | Authenticity requirements, audience fit, current buying or listing terms, and payout method |
| Other established online marketplaces | Sellers comparing additional online audiences | Current category rules, fees, seller protections, shipping expectations, and eligibility |
| Another local buyer channel | Sellers with items for which nearby demand may matter more than a national audience | Whether the channel reaches likely buyers and what arrangements or fees apply |
The final five entries describe channel types, not verified endorsements of specific services. Don’t assume a channel accepts every game or console, or that convenience guarantees a better net return.

What Amazon, eBay, and GameStop charge or offer
Amazon: selling-plan and referral fees
Amazon’s U.S. seller pricing page, checked in 2026, lists a 15% referral fee for video games and gaming accessories and 8% for video game consoles. It lists the Individual plan at $0.99 per item sold and the Professional plan at $39.99 per month; optional services may add costs. Amazon notes that the fee category assigned to a product can differ from its storefront category, so confirm the applicable category and costs for your listing. See Amazon’s U.S. seller pricing.
eBay: insertion and final-value fees
eBay’s U.S. fee page, checked in 2026, lists up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month for most categories, followed by a $0.35 insertion fee per listing. Final-value percentages depend on category and sale amount, and eBay also charges a per-order fee. The fee applies to the total sale amount as eBay defines it, so don’t estimate proceeds from the item price alone. Check the current category-specific schedule and your account terms when listing. See eBay’s U.S. selling-fee details.

GameStop: selected-item trade-in
GameStop accepts selected games, consoles, controllers, and other devices for cash or trade credit at participating locations in the United States and Guam. The company determines condition and trade value; availability depends on the product and store, and trade values can vary. Its terms state, “All trades are final.” Check eligibility and the offer for your specific item before making a trip. See GameStop’s trade-in information.
How to compare offers without confusing price and payout
Use the same item and condition description when comparing channels, and calculate what you would actually keep:
- Marketplace sale: expected sale amount minus applicable listing and selling fees, shipping, packaging, and optional services.
- Trade-in: the offered cash or credit for the item, compared with your likely net from selling it yourself. Treat credit separately from cash if you would not otherwise spend it at that retailer.
- Local sale: expected payment minus any channel costs and the time or travel involved in meeting a buyer.
For eBay or Amazon, check the live fee schedule for the item category and your account. For trade-ins and other retailer channels, confirm the current item-specific offer and requirements. A higher displayed offer can still produce less after costs or be less useful if it is store credit rather than cash.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that cost sellers money
- Using asking prices as expected value: Compare realistic market evidence and net proceeds instead of assuming an unsold listing price will be achieved.
- Mixing up condition or completeness: A loose disc, a complete-in-box copy, and a collectible edition are not interchangeable descriptions. Identify exactly what the buyer receives.
- Omitting flaws or accessories: Missing manuals, damaged cases, wear, and included controllers should be shown or stated clearly.
- Ignoring fees and shipping: A sale price alone does not reveal what you keep. Check the applicable charges and fulfillment costs before accepting an offer.
- Assuming a trade-in is guaranteed: GameStop’s program is limited by product and store, and its staff determines condition and value.
- Overstating testing or authenticity: Describe only checks you performed and claims you can support.
