Today, eBay may route eligible second-hand watches through authentication, but that check is not a service record, timing test or guarantee of a watch’s present condition.
Cartier’s Santos: a watch designed for flight
Cartier says watches began appearing in its Maison registers in 1853. Its best-known early wristwatch story begins in 1904, when Louis Cartier made a watch for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who wanted to read the time while flying without taking a hand off the controls to check a pocket watch. Cartier describes the Santos as one of the first wristwatches; that is the Maison’s characterization, not a universally settled ranking. Cartier’s account of its watch style ties the design to practical legibility and a distinctive square case with visible screws.
The Tank: Cartier’s formal geometry
Cartier dates the Tank’s creation to 1917 and credits Louis Cartier with its shape. The Maison identifies the two parallel brancards—the side elements that frame the case—as a defining feature, with the design extending from a square dial into a rectangular bracelet. The Tank’s story is therefore less about solving the Santos’s in-flight reading problem and more about a cohesive, architectural form. Cartier’s history of its designs presents both models as milestones in the Maison’s watchmaking.
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso: protection that became a signature
Jaeger-LeCoultre dates the founding of its Manufacture to 1833. Its Reverso story starts with a challenge in 1930: how to protect a watch’s glass during polo matches. The Maison credits businessman César de Trey with the flip-case idea, his friend Jacques-David LeCoultre with producing the watch, and designer René-Alfred Chauvot with its design. Jaeger-LeCoultre says the Reverso was created in 1931. The Reverso’s official history describes how its swiveling case served that protective purpose.

The case’s defining trick later offered a surface for personalization. Some current Reverso Duoface and Duetto models use the reverse side for a second display, turning the original mechanical solution into a platform for another expression of the watch. Jaeger-LeCoultre reports that it has developed more than 50 calibres for the Reverso range; that is a current brand-reported figure, not a measure of the number of movements fitted to every model. These are separate design histories, not interchangeable versions of the same idea. The cited brand histories establish their respective model milestones; they do not establish the terms or dates of any exclusive Cartier–Jaeger-LeCoultre movement-supply contract.

What eBay authentication does—and does not—tell you
Authentication eligibility depends on the marketplace, the listing and the current rules shown there. On eBay’s cited US pages, certain qualifying watches priced at US$2,000 or more receive mandatory authentication. Eligible watches priced from US$500 to US$1,999.99 may have an optional add-on service. One cited US page lists an US$80 add-on fee; fees and eligibility can change, so check the live listing and current terms before relying on either figure. eBay’s US watch authentication information describes the service and eligibility.
eBay France’s rules are different: Cartier and Jaeger-LeCoultre appear on its eligible watch-brand list, but the described service also depends on category, badge, seller, buyer and shipping requirements. Qualifying items must be listed and shipped from France, Italy or Germany for that service. eBay says the authentication partner checks a watch’s authenticity and whether it conforms to the listing details. The cited US service is not affiliated with or endorsed by the brands sold on eBay, and the partner does not test timekeeping accuracy or waterproofing. Authentication is not evidence that a used mechanical watch has been recently serviced or is keeping time correctly. eBay also allows certain replacement parts under its US vintage policy, including some parts no longer made by the original manufacturer and commonly replaced items such as straps, crystals, spring bars or gaskets. That is distinct from a customized watch, so inspect the specific listing and current eligibility rules. eBay’s US watch service and policy information describes these limits.

- Check the marketplace and badge. Confirm which country’s eBay site the listing uses, whether the listing itself qualifies, and what the current service includes.
- Match the watch to the description. Compare the stated model or reference, photographs, parts and any disclosed modifications. Ask the seller about details that are missing or unclear.
- Read the condition and service history. Look for service documentation and a clear description of known faults. For a vintage or used mechanical watch, consider having an experienced watchmaker assess it, including its timekeeping.
- Review the transaction terms. Check the return terms and shipping arrangements before committing; authentication does not remove the need to understand the sale conditions.
Can a Jaeger-LeCoultre archive extract prove authenticity?
No. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s archive extract can document original technical details based on information supplied by the owner, but the Maison says it does not reflect the watch’s current condition and cannot be considered an authenticity certificate. The cited service page lists a CHF 300 fee and an approximate two-month delivery after payment; both details are subject to change, so confirm the current process and fee with the Maison.
