You may lose some or all of that margin, and a fee or shortfall may affect what remains. That does not, by itself, establish that the exchange also sells BTC in a separate spot wallet. The exact outcome depends on the exchange, contract, margin mode, and account structure.
What liquidation does—and what “your Bitcoin” means
A Bitcoin futures or derivatives contract gives you price exposure; it is not the same thing as holding BTC in a spot wallet. Liquidation acts on the contract and the margin or collateral governed by its rules. The exchange closes or reduces exposure when the account no longer meets the product’s maintenance-margin requirement.
The available official documentation does not establish that liquidating a derivative automatically sells Bitcoin held in a separate spot account. Whether other balances or positions can support the trade depends on the venue’s account and margin arrangements. Check which wallet and collateral pool the contract uses rather than assuming every balance on the platform is involved.
What triggers liquidation, and what happens first?
Liquidation is a margin-risk process, not simply a sale at a preset “liquidation price.” Binance says its futures process is triggered when available collateral falls below the margin required to maintain a position; Kraken describes action when equity falls below maintenance margin. The trigger and price inputs vary by contract and exchange, and the eventual execution price can differ from both the trigger estimate and the bankruptcy price.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Some venues try to reduce the position before closing it entirely. Binance describes canceling relevant open orders and attempting to reduce the margin deficit with an immediate-or-cancel order. Coinbase Global Exchange says it sells small portions until margin returns to a stated safe level. Depending on the process and how much of an order fills, liquidation may therefore be partial or complete.
Does liquidation take all your collateral?
Not necessarily. The exchange applies losses to the margin or collateral covered by the account’s rules. If a close executes at a better price than the position’s bankruptcy price, some margin may remain. Kraken says of its derivatives process: “If your position closes at a better price than the absolute worst-case (bankruptcy) price, you keep any remaining margin.” This is Kraken-specific, not a universal promise.
A fee can reduce what is left. Binance documents a liquidation clearance fee for certain liquidations, calculated using the applicable rate and notional value; its page says the fee does not apply to a position that is bankrupt following liquidation. The applicable rate and exceptions depend on the contract rules, so there is no universal fee figure.

If execution is worse than the bankruptcy price, the position can leave a shortfall. What happens next is determined by the venue’s loss-handling process; it may involve an insurance fund, liquidity providers, auto-deleveraging, an unwind, or clawbacks. An account-level guarantee against negative balances should not be assumed unless the applicable terms say so.
How exchange liquidation processes differ
Binance Futures: reduce the deficit, then use a venue-specific waterfall
Binance describes a “Smart Liquidation” sequence. After the maintenance-margin condition is reached, relevant open orders are canceled and the system attempts to reduce the deficit with a large immediate-or-cancel order. If the remaining assets are enough to meet maintenance margin after realized losses and the liquidation clearance fee, the process stops. An unfilled remainder can become a bankrupt position that the Futures Insurance Fund takes over to the extent possible.
Binance says its Futures Insurance Fund covers the difference between bankruptcy price and liquidation execution price, and may cover a bankrupt-position shortfall to the extent possible. The fund is a risk-mitigation mechanism, not a refund to the liquidated trader: Binance states that “Traders will not get any of their losses back from a Futures Insurance Fund” and that the fund is not an insurance product.

If the fund cannot cover the loss, Binance says auto-deleveraging (ADL) can automatically close bankrupt positions and some opposing non-bankrupt traders’ positions. Binance’s documentation also cautions that a “99.9% confidence interval” used to calibrate a minimum fund size from historical stressed scenarios is not a claim that ADL will be avoided in 99.9% of liquidation scenarios.
Kraken Derivatives: liquidation, assignment, then possible unwind
Kraken’s Equity Protection Process has three stages: liquidation, assignment, and unwind. It first attempts an immediate-or-cancel market order with a limit price intended to prevent a negative account balance. If the order does not fully fill, remaining contracts are routed to registered liquidity providers that have agreed to take positions in these circumstances.
If providers cannot take the remaining contracts, Kraken describes an unwind: contracts between the trader and counterparties are canceled, and any remaining value in the margin account is transferred to counterparties as compensation. Kraken says an unwind in one margin account does not affect other margin accounts. These steps describe Kraken’s process, not a general rule for derivatives exchanges.

Coinbase: partial liquidation and a contract-dependent waterfall
Coinbase Global Exchange’s help page describes partial liquidation when collateral margin (CM) falls below initial margin (IM): small portions are sold until margin reaches the stated safe IM level. If CM falls below close-out margin (CoM), its described sequence checks for excess CM in other portfolios under the same ultimate beneficial owner, assigns the position to liquidity support providers (LSPs), then uses ADL if LSP capital is insufficient.
The same page says an insurance fund covers negative equity so opposing traders can realize profit and loss (PnL); if the fund is depleted in a large-scale event, opposing-side user funds may cover negative balances through clawbacks. Coinbase International Exchange’s legal trading rules describe LSP availability as contract-specific. Where no LSP program exists, the flow can move from auto-liquidation directly to ADL and then, if applicable, insurance-fund and clawback stages. The applicable contract and jurisdiction terms matter.

With isolated margin, collateral is assigned to a particular position under that product’s rules; with cross margin, a wider eligible balance or set of positions may support it. The labels alone do not settle which funds are exposed: the venue’s exact wallet and account arrangements do.

These examples are venue-specific. Before opening a position, identify the contract’s margin mode, which wallet holds its collateral, and whether the venue’s rules let other positions or balances support it.
What to check in your exchange’s rules
- Trigger and reference price: Find the maintenance-margin rule and the price inputs used to assess it.
- Liquidation method: Check whether the venue reduces exposure in increments, submits a single order, or closes the position outright.
- Collateral scope: Confirm whether the position is isolated or cross-margined and which wallet or account balances are in scope.
- Execution and fees: Look for the distinction between liquidation, execution, and bankruptcy prices, plus any liquidation or clearance fee.
- Loss waterfall: Check whether the contract terms provide for an insurance fund, liquidity-provider assignment, ADL, unwind, or clawbacks—and the order in which they apply.
Exchange help pages and legal trading rules can change. Binance, Kraken, and Coinbase’s cited documentation was current as captured on October 7, 2026; verify the current terms for your product and jurisdiction before relying on an account-specific outcome. The cited pages do not provide a comparable exchange-wide dataset showing how often liquidations occur or how much traders typically lose, so no general average loss or typical percentage of Bitcoin taken is established.
