Exchange brokerage generally gives an institution access to trading through a particular venue. Crypto prime brokerage is a broader service arrangement that may combine execution, access to multiple liquidity providers, custody, financing and settlement. Neither label guarantees a specific custody structure, legal protection, best execution or lower cost: those depend on the provider, account, contract, asset and jurisdiction.
The practical comparison is therefore not simply “prime broker or exchange?” It is which legal entity holds or controls assets, how trades are executed and settled, what collateral rights apply, and what happens if the provider or a trading venue becomes unavailable.
What is the difference between a crypto prime broker and an exchange broker?
An exchange brokerage is typically centered on trading through a particular venue. A prime brokerage may bring several institutional services together in one relationship, such as execution, multi-venue access, custody, financing and settlement. The scope varies by provider and product; “prime brokerage” is not a standardized promise that every service is included.
For example, Coinbase markets Prime as combining execution, financing, futures, custody and staking. Kraken describes Prime as offering trading, custody and financing. These are each provider’s descriptions of its own offering, not independent evaluations of the services or their results (Coinbase Prime; Kraken Prime).

How do the models compare in practice?
| What to compare | Exchange brokerage | Prime brokerage |
|---|---|---|
| Trading access | Usually trading through the particular venue providing the service. | May aggregate liquidity or route orders across venues or providers. Confirm the actual destinations and execution methods. |
| Custody | Depends on the exchange account and its legal terms. | May include custody, but custody model, custodian, asset control and protections depend on the specific account and agreement. |
| Financing | May be available under venue-specific terms; availability is not established by the exchange label alone. | May be offered against eligible assets, subject to credit approval, collateral terms and other conditions. |
| Settlement and asset movement | Depends on the venue’s trading and settlement workflow. | May combine services, but some products require an asset transfer or sweep before trading while others permit direct trading. |
| Cost and outcomes | Must be assessed using applicable fees, spreads, financing and transfer costs. | Must be assessed on the same basis; a broader service bundle does not establish lower total cost or better realized execution. |
“May” matters in this comparison. Product names do not settle who holds an asset, whether it is segregated, how an order is routed, or which legal entity is responsible. Ask for account-specific documentation rather than infer terms from a provider’s general description.

Coinbase Help distinguishes among Prime Custody, Prime Trading and Prime Vault. It describes Prime Custody as combining trading, financing, settlement and storage through Coinbase Custody Trust Company, which it identifies as a New York-chartered trust company regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services. Its comparison marks Prime Custody and Prime Vault as qualified-custodian offerings, but Prime Trading as not qualified-custodian custody. It also says Prime Vault assets must be swept before trading, whereas Prime Custody permits direct trading and financing. These statements describe Coinbase’s products; confirm the current account documentation, contracting entity and applicable terms for the institution’s own account (Coinbase Help: Introduction to Prime Custody).
Kraken Prime: provider-described routing and collateral
Kraken says Prime reaches 20+ liquidity providers and uses smart order routing. It also describes financing against assets in custody and collateral remaining in a Kraken custody vault. The 20+ figure is Kraken’s current provider-reported reach claim, not a measured share of market liquidity or independent proof of best execution. The product descriptions do not establish universal custody protections or availability for every client or jurisdiction (Kraken Prime).

These examples show why a provider comparison should distinguish advertised capabilities from the terms that govern a particular account. A service’s stated access to multiple liquidity sources does not by itself prove that every order is routed to them, or that the resulting execution is better than a single-venue alternative.
Is crypto prime brokerage safer than leaving assets on an exchange?
Not necessarily. “Prime brokerage” does not, by itself, determine who legally holds the assets, whether they are segregated or held in an omnibus structure, who can move them, or what recovery rights apply in insolvency. A prime account may combine trading and custody, but the precise structure is product- and contract-specific. The same scrutiny is needed for an exchange account.

Legal protections also depend on the asset, account, legal entity and jurisdiction. In material published May 15, 2025, SEC Division of Trading and Markets staff discussed broker-dealer custody and capital questions and noted the absence of SIPA protection for holders of non-security crypto assets through a broker-dealer. That is a specific warning in the staff FAQ, not a blanket determination about every crypto prime broker, every asset or every jurisdiction (SEC Division of Trading and Markets FAQ material).
Review the operative agreements and obtain legal advice appropriate to the institution and jurisdiction. In particular, establish the treatment of customer assets, segregation, transfer authority, collateral rights, any rehypothecation provisions, insolvency terms and the regulatory regime that applies to the contracting entity.

How should an institution evaluate providers?
Compare actual account terms and workflows, not just whether a provider calls its service “prime.” Use these questions to structure diligence and make providers answer on a comparable basis:
- Identify the counterparty. Which legal entity signs the agreement, where is it regulated, and which law governs the account? Coinbase says the applicable entity can depend on the product and the client’s place of incorporation, so verify the entity for the specific service.
- Map custody and control. Who is the custodian? Are assets segregated or omnibus? Who can authorize transfers? What do the account documents say about customer-asset treatment and insolvency?
- Trace an order. Does an order execute on one venue or route across providers? Which order types, execution support and reporting are included? Ask how execution is measured and what records the institution can review.
- Trace asset movement and settlement. Must assets be transferred or swept before trading? How and when does settlement occur? What permissions and operational controls govern deposits, withdrawals and internal transfers?
- Examine financing and collateral. Which assets qualify, what credit criteria and haircuts apply, and where is collateral held? Review margining, liquidation rights, collateral reuse and the consequences of a dispute or default.
- Check oversight and operations. Confirm available reconciliation, transaction reporting, user permissions, audit evidence, support arrangements and operational escalation procedures under the actual agreement.
- Compare full cost and resilience. Include explicit fees, spreads, financing and transfer costs. Also assess concentration, outages and recovery terms. Use comparable quotes and provider-specific evidence rather than marketing statements.
The cited provider materials do not establish which model has lower total cost, better realized execution or better insolvency recovery. Those questions require comparable quotes, contract review and due diligence; the breadth of a service bundle is not a substitute for that evidence.
