Why is Red Lobster closing locations?
Financial and operating pressure predates the 2026 list
Red Lobster’s May 19, 2024 Chapter 11 announcement said it intended to improve operations, reduce locations, and sell substantially all assets as a going concern. The company said restaurants would continue operating during the process. Its announcement described financial and operational challenges.
Associated Press reporting on court filings said annual guest counts were 30% below 2019 and the company recorded a $76 million loss in 2023. The AP also described rising lease and labor costs alongside longer-running difficulties. Those factors provide context for the chain’s contraction; the evidence does not establish the reason for each 2026 address.

The shrimp promotion was one factor, not a complete explanation
The $20 Ultimate Endless Shrimp offer drew more guests than expected, according to AP reporting. Thai Union CFO Ludovic Garnier told investors, “We knew the price was cheap, but the idea was to bring more traffic in the restaurants.” The promotion’s economics became a prominent issue, but it would be misleading to say the deal alone caused Red Lobster’s closures: the reporting also points to broader operating and cost pressures.
Some closures can have local causes
The Times Square restaurant illustrates why individual sites need separate explanations. Fast Company’s report said construction reportedly impaired access and foot traffic, while the building was planned for conversion into residential apartments. That is a location-specific property issue, not an established reason for the other listed closures.

Red Lobster announced it exited Chapter 11 on September 16, 2024, after acquisition by RL Investor Holdings LLC. At that time, the company reported 545 restaurants across 44 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces. That was the company’s count at exit, not a current restaurant total. The 2026 footprint reductions therefore followed the bankruptcy process rather than occurring during an active Chapter 11 case.
