What can body retinol do?
Retinol is one type of retinoid. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says over-the-counter retinol is routinely used to improve uneven skin tone, pigmentation, and texture. Topical retinoids can also be an option for mild acne, mild pigmentation irregularities, and mild fine lines and wrinkles. For cellulite, the AAD says a product containing 0.3% retinol may have some effect, and it may take six months or longer to know whether it helps. How to start using a body retinoid
- Ask a dermatologist whether it suits you. The AAD advises discussing retinoid use with a dermatologist. People with skin allergies or dry skin may not be good candidates. Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. AAD: Retinoid or retinol?
- Choose the least-intense formula available. Start every other night, then gradually increase use as tolerated, following the product label and a dermatologist’s advice.
- Apply it at night and protect skin during the day. The AAD advises nighttime retinoid use and daytime sun protection.
- Pay attention to irritation. Retinoid irritation can trigger hyperpigmentation, particularly for people with darker skin. Starting slowly and using moisturizer can help reduce that possibility; stop and seek professional advice if you have a concerning reaction.
What to do if you are considering it for cellulite
The AAD advises testing a cellulite cream or lotion on a small area and waiting 48 hours to see whether a rash develops. That is a precaution for trying cellulite creams or lotions, not a guarantee that a retinol product will be effective or irritation-free.
