On Jan. 30, 2026, corn and soybean futures were lower in overnight trading after weekly U.S. export sales fell, while a CoBank report described brisk fall soybean selling and increased crop storage. The same day’s agriculture roundup also reported winter advisories and cold-weather forecasts for parts of the northern Plains and central and southern United States. These are historical market figures and forecasts from that news cycle, not current prices or weather guidance.
1. Corn and soybean futures fell after weaker weekly export sales
Successful Farming’s Jan. 30, 2026, roundup reported that U.S. corn export sales for the week ending Jan. 22 fell 59% from the previous week to 1.65 million metric tons. Soybean sales declined 67% to 819,000 metric tons, and wheat sales fell 10% to 558,200 metric tons. The figures were attributed to USDA data in the roundup.

The weekly sales totals measure new sales in one week. They are distinct from the marketing-year shipment totals, which cover exports accumulated since the start of each crop’s marketing year. The roundup reported corn exports since Sept. 1 at 32.1 million metric tons, 53% higher year over year; wheat shipments since June 1 at 16.2 million metric tons, up 21%; and soybean exports at 20.5 million metric tons, down 38% year over year. It connected the soybean decline to the U.S.-China tariff conflict, which it said ended at the end of October; that explanation is the roundup’s characterization, not an independently established cause here.

2. CoBank described fall soybean sales and changing storage patterns
The roundup, citing a CoBank report and its lead grains and oilseeds economist Tanner Ehmke, said farmers sold soybeans aggressively in fall 2025 and moved a record amount of crops into commercial storage to make room for a record corn harvest. The reported share of commercial-stored crops owned by companies shifted in different directions by crop.

For corn, the roundup said Dec. 1 inventories reached a record 13.3 billion bushels, 10% above a year earlier. It reported 8.7 billion bushels on-farm, up 14%, and printed the off-farm figure as “4.58 million bushels,” up 3.9% year over year. That off-farm number is out of scale with the reported total and on-farm amount. Because the original CoBank report was not independently checked, the printed unit should not be silently changed or treated as a verified quantity.

Ehmke’s interpretation, as quoted in the roundup, was that a market rally following a trade truce encouraged farmers to price more soybeans, while corn and wheat pricing lagged. He said this supported cash basis in some regions but could leave selling pressure if prices rose, especially for corn because more stocks remained on farms. As Ehmke put it: “The increase in on-farm storage for corn in particular implies there is more corn in the countryside also waiting to be priced, pressuring both flat price and basis.” These are attributed views about the report’s market implications, not a guarantee of future prices or basis movements.

- Eastern Montana and western South Dakota: Winter weather advisories were reported. In western South Dakota, the forecast called for as much as 1 inch of snow and 0.1 inch of ice over the weekend, with gusts up to 35 mph, patchy blowing snow and slippery roads.
- Southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma: Overnight wind chills were forecast around −15°F.
- Central Kansas south into Texas and east along the Gulf Coast: The roundup described extremely cold conditions across this broad area.
