Moissanite vs. Lab-Grown Diamond Cost: How to Compare Prices Fairly

Moissanite often costs less than a lab-grown diamond, but the difference depends on size, quality and what the price includes. Learn how to compare the stones fairly.

Moissanite usually costs less than a lab-grown diamond, but there is no reliable universal price ratio: size, stone quality, seller and whether you are comparing a loose stone or a finished ring all matter. For a useful comparison, match shape and face-up dimensions in millimeters, then compare each stone’s actual carat weight, specifications and documentation.

What do moissanite and lab-grown diamonds cost?

Available figures are snapshots and retailer estimates, not a single current market price. In a comparison published September 25, 2026, retailer Clairamor listed a 6.5 mm round moissanite—described as roughly a one-carat diamond look—at $225 unbranded or $375 as Charles & Colvard Forever One. Its picker showed a one-carat round lab-grown diamond starting at $640. Clairamor sells lab-grown diamonds but not moissanite, and its examples do not establish a market-wide ratio or a grade-matched comparison. See Clairamor’s dated comparison.

For additional context, Rings.com Research reported September 2026 median listing prices of $510 for a one-carat, $760 for a 1.5-carat and $1,295 for a two-carat lab-grown diamond. Those medians were calculated from 190,184 public loose-stone listings across six U.S. retailers, captured September 17, 2026. The listings varied in shape, color and clarity, and exclude settings; they are not quotes for a particular stone. Read the Rings.com Research listing survey.

Other published estimates use different assumptions. USA Jewels gives approximate one-carat-equivalent round-stone ranges of $250–$500 for moissanite and $800–$1,500 for lab-grown diamond, with the diamond estimate assuming VS2 clarity, G color and excellent cut. These are retailer-authored estimates, not directly interchangeable with either Clairamor’s examples or Rings.com’s listing medians. See USA Jewels’ comparison.

Clairamor’s same-size examples

Clairamor also listed these round-stone examples on September 25, 2026. “Carat look” describes the approximate visual size relative to a diamond; the figures are its seller examples, not current quotes or universal prices.

Round size Moissanite, unbranded Moissanite, Forever One Lab-grown diamond
6.5 mm, about a 1-carat look $225 $375 From $640
7.5 mm, about a 1.5-carat look $275 $600 From $923
8 mm, about a 2-carat look $300 $750 From $1,178
9.5 mm, about a 3-carat look $425 $1,200 From $1,890

These seller examples pair stones with different quality descriptions, so they show how listed prices can differ, not how much a buyer will save on an equivalent stone. Retail listings change; check the live offer and the exact stone record before purchasing.

Why “one carat” can mislead

Moissanite and lab-grown diamond are different materials: moissanite is silicon carbide, while a lab-grown diamond has the same carbon crystal material as a diamond. Moissanite is about 9% lighter than diamond at the same size, according to Clairamor, and many listings describe it using a diamond-equivalent size. A 6.5 mm round moissanite is therefore more clearly described as a one-carat look than as a one-carat moissanite by actual weight.

When comparing listings, use this order:

  1. Match shape and millimeter measurements. Compare face-up dimensions such as diameter for round stones, not only the carat-equivalent label.
  2. Check actual carat weight. Confirm the listed weight rather than assuming a visual-size label is the stone’s weight.
  3. Compare the specifications. Review cut, color, clarity and the grading source or documentation supplied for that exact stone.
  4. Compare like price scopes. Make sure both prices are for loose stones, or both include comparable settings and ring components.

What changes the value of the comparison?

Stone quality and documentation

A price comparison is meaningful only if you know what each listing includes. Check the quality descriptions and documentation for the specific stone; the cited examples do not establish identical grades across options. A broad retailer median can help provide context, but it cannot tell you whether a particular stone is a fair quote.

Appearance and preference

Clairamor describes moissanite as producing more rainbow-colored fire, while diamond has a different, more familiar sparkle. Which look you prefer is subjective, so price alone cannot identify the better choice.

Loose stone versus finished ring

Rings.com’s figures cover loose stones and exclude settings. A finished ring also reflects its metal, setting design, labor and brand, so compare complete ring prices only when the included components are clear.

How to use prices when making a purchase decision

  • Use dated examples to understand the possible price gap, not to predict a universal saving or today’s offer.
  • Ask for the exact stone’s millimeter dimensions, actual carat weight and quality details before comparing quotes.
  • Separate the loose-stone price from the cost of the setting and other ring components.
  • Do not treat either gemstone as an investment based on these price figures; they do not establish resale value.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
