What bereavement fares can—and can’t—do
Bereavement fares are airline-specific offers for qualifying urgent travel after a death or, in some cases, when a close family member is imminently dying. Eligibility may depend on the traveler’s relationship to the person, route, fare class, loyalty-account status, booking channel, travel dates, and documentation.
Some policies describe a discount; others offer flexibility such as reduced change fees. A change-fee waiver does not necessarily eliminate a fare difference if the replacement flight costs more. Delta and AAA both caution that ordinary promotional fares may be cheaper than a bereavement fare. AAA’s overview
Six airlines with bereavement or compassionate travel options
Alaska Airlines
AAA reports that eligible travelers, generally Mileage Plan members, may receive 10% off the lowest available rate fare when booking by phone. Travel generally must take place within seven days of the death of an immediate family member. These terms are AAA’s 2026 account; the current Alaska and Hawaiian shared policy page did not provide readable details for independent confirmation, so verify eligibility and the offer directly with Alaska before relying on it. Delta Air Lines
SkyMiles members can ask a Delta representative about a bereavement fare; availability is limited. Delta describes the benefit as waiving service fees on the outbound and/or return part of a trip, while fare differences may still apply. The ticket must be purchased and travel must begin within seven days of the death or imminent death. The policy applies only to Delta-marketed and Delta-operated flights and Delta Connection flights. Delta’s immediate-family definition includes a spouse or domestic partner; parents and certain in-laws; children and certain in-laws; siblings and certain in-laws; grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Check the policy or ask the representative whether your relationship qualifies.

Air Canada
Air Canada’s policy covers Air Canada, Rouge, Express, and codeshare flights in specified economy fare classes. Travel must occur within 10 days of booking, and the trip cannot exceed 60 days. Economy Basic is excluded for travel within North America but is eligible for international travel under the policy. Requests are made by phone. Air Canada requires supporting proof within seven days after your return. Accepted documentation can include a death certificate, funeral director’s statement, coroner’s statement, registration of death, or a physician’s letter concerning imminent death. If the required documents are not supplied, you may have to pay the difference between the special fare and the regular fare. Completed travel cannot be submitted for retrospective consideration.

Hawaiian Airlines
AAA reports a “Neighbor Island Emergency Travel” rate for travel between Hawaiian islands due to the hospitalization or death of a close family member. Under the reported process, the traveler books normally and requests the emergency fare after travel; if approved, the difference between the original ticket and discounted rate is refunded. WestJet
WestJet offers bereavement fares for imminent death or a death in the family. Travelers need a WestJet Rewards account and must book by phone. The offer applies to Econo and EconoFlex fares, not UltraBasic, Member Exclusive, Premium, or Business fares, and it excludes partner-airline travel. The entire trip—including outbound and return travel—must be completed within 30 days of booking. The airline’s linked help page did not provide readable details to confirm specific eligibility, documentation, or fare conditions, so ask Qantas directly before making plans. How to check whether a special fare is worthwhile
- Compare the full price. Ask for the bereavement or compassionate fare, then compare it with publicly available fares for the same flights and dates. Include any fees and the cost of likely changes.
- Confirm that the itinerary qualifies. Check the operating and marketing carrier, route, fare class, and whether partner flights are excluded.
- Check the relationship and membership rules. Ask whether the airline recognizes your relationship to the deceased or ill family member, and whether a loyalty account is required.
- Verify the clock and booking channel. Confirm when travel must begin, when the return must be completed, and whether the airline requires a phone booking.
- Get evidence instructions before departure. Ask what documents are accepted, when they must be submitted, and where to send them. Air Canada’s policy, for example, requires proof within seven days after return.
- Clarify what flexibility means. Ask whether a change-fee waiver covers the full itinerary and whether you would still owe a fare difference for a more expensive replacement flight.
- Keep the answer and booking details. Record the representative’s instructions and retain receipts and required documents in case you need to make a claim or change.
Other options if these six do not fit
The six airlines are not a complete worldwide list. Loganair publishes a compassionate-fares policy that includes bereavement-related urgent travel. It requires supporting documentation and prior approval, which is discretionary, and applies only to Loganair-operated services. Its policy covers close family and specified step, half, adopted, great, in-law, same-sex, and clergy relationships. Check the airline’s terms for the relationship definition and approval process. If no special fare applies, compare flexible tickets or consider using miles or points. Travel insurance may help only if the policy terms cover the circumstances; do not assume an existing or newly purchased policy will cover a known event or reimburse a particular ticket.
