In Q2 2026, revenue rose 28% year over year to $60.8 billion while net income fell 14% to $15.85 billion. That is a real pressure point, but it does not by itself show that Meta’s advertising business is weakening structurally. The available results also do not establish what period a “bad year” refers to or quantify Meta shares’ return over that period.
What changed in Meta’s latest results?
The contrast is between stronger sales and lower quarterly earnings. Meta reported Q2 2026 revenue of $60.8 billion, up 28% year over year, and net income of $15.85 billion, down 14%, according to Meta’s results release. The Associated Press report attributed the profit decline to legal expenses and severance costs. Those costs help explain the mismatch between revenue and net income; the figures alone do not establish that customer demand or advertising sales have turned down.
Strong annual earnings provide context, not a guarantee
For fiscal 2025, Meta reported $60.46 billion in net income and diluted earnings per share of $23.49 in its 2025 Form 10-K. That full-year result demonstrates substantial profitability, but it should not be treated as a forecast for 2026 or as evidence that every quarterly cost increase will be temporary.
Why are investors focused on spending?
Meta is committing much more capital to build capacity for future services, including AI-related infrastructure. Its 2025 Form 10-K reports capital expenditures of $72.22 billion, including principal payments on finance leases. The company’s outlook for 2026 rose between two dated statements:

| Statement and date | 2026 capex figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Q4 2025 prepared remarks | $115–135 billion | Forecast stated at the time, not realized spending. Meta’s prepared remarks. |
| After Q2 2026, as reported by the Associated Press | $130–145 billion | Later forecast reported by AP, not a final annual result. AP’s Q2 results report. |
These are company-wide capital-spending forecasts, not a separately stated AI-only budget. The increase signals a higher planned cash commitment, but capex by itself does not show whether the new infrastructure will earn attractive returns. To judge that, investors need to follow the spending alongside operating cash generation and the revenue and profit ultimately supported by that capacity.
Meta’s balance sheet offers capacity, not proof of returns
At the end of 2025, Meta reported $81.59 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities, alongside $58.74 billion in long-term debt in its 10-K. Those balances help describe the resources and obligations it had at that date; they do not establish the future payoff of planned investment or substitute for tracking operating cash flow.

What does Meta expect next?
For Q3 2026, Meta guided to revenue of $61–64 billion. It also said it expected 2026 operating income to exceed 2025 operating income, according to its Q2 2026 results release. These are forward-looking expectations, not reported outcomes. Comparing later results with that guidance will help distinguish whether sales growth is translating into operating earnings while investment rises.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the company’s view of AI in the Q2 statement, as quoted by AP: “AI is accelerating our core business today, powering our next generation of products, and opening the door to entirely new enterprise opportunities.” That is management’s characterization; the cited results do not independently establish how much AI has contributed to revenue or whether returns will justify the planned spending.

What could undermine the growth outlook?
Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies legal and regulatory developments—including privacy, data use, competition, youth safety, consumer protection and advertising rules—as risks that could adversely affect advertising revenue. These risks matter because strong current sales do not remove the possibility that rules or legal outcomes could affect how Meta targets, measures or monetizes advertising.
Execution is another uncertainty: the company must turn large infrastructure commitments into products and services that sustain growth and earnings. The figures available here do not quantify expected returns on that investment, free cash flow, Meta’s valuation, its annual stock return or its performance relative to peers.

How to assess whether Meta’s resilience is holding
- Track revenue and earnings together. Continued sales growth alongside operating-income progress would be a different signal from revenue growth that fails to support earnings.
- Compare actual spending with dated forecasts. The $115–135 billion range was stated in Q4 2025 prepared remarks; the later $130–145 billion range was reported by AP after Q2 2026. Neither is realized 2026 capex.
- Look for evidence of returns, not just AI announcements. Management’s explanation of strategic intent is not the same as disclosed, measurable returns on infrastructure spending.
- Separate company performance from share performance. A stock’s result depends on the dates measured and the price series used. Without a defined “bad year” period and a verified market-data series, the operating results here cannot establish how much META shares rose or fell or whether earnings caused a particular move.
