Lease vs. Finance a New Car in 2026: How to Choose

Leasing and financing serve different needs. Compare written offers for the same car and time period, including mileage, contract terms, total cost, and what happens at the end.

There is no universal winner between leasing and financing a new car in 2026. Financing is generally the better fit if you want to own the car, drive without a lease mileage cap, and keep, sell, or trade it after payoff. Leasing may suit you if you prefer changing cars regularly and can meet the contract’s mileage, condition, and return terms. Compare the full cost of each option for the same car and the same period—not just the monthly payment.

This is general U.S. guidance, not a personalized calculation. Your best choice depends on the vehicle, location, mileage, credit, actual offers, and how long you plan to keep the car.

What financing and leasing payments actually buy

With an auto loan, payments go toward the vehicle’s purchase price and the cost of borrowing. Once the loan is paid off, you own the car. You can keep, sell, or trade it, though a sale or trade while you still owe money must account for the remaining loan balance.

A lease is an agreement to use a vehicle for a set period and number of miles. Payments generally cover the car’s expected depreciation during the lease, plus a rent charge, taxes, and fees. They do not automatically lead to ownership. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains the distinction in its guide to leasing versus buying a car.

Lease versus finance at a glance

Decision Finance with an auto loan Lease
What payments cover Purchase price over time, plus borrowing costs. Expected depreciation during the lease, plus rent charges, taxes, and fees.
At the end You own the car once the loan is paid. You return it, unless the contract gives you a purchase option that you choose to use.
Mileage No contractual lease mileage cap, but mileage can affect resale or trade-in value. The contract typically sets an allowance; excess mileage may result in a charge.
Condition Wear and damage can affect resale value and maintenance costs. Excess wear, damage, or missing equipment may trigger charges under the contract.
Flexibility You can keep, sell, or trade the car, subject to any remaining loan balance. Return, purchase, or extension options depend on the contract and lessor; early termination can be costly.
Typical term 3–7 years, according to a CFPB page last reviewed in 2023; actual loan terms vary. 2–4 years, according to the same CFPB page; actual lease terms vary.
Typical mileage limit No lease mileage limit. Most leases restrict mileage to 10,000–15,000 miles per year, according to the CFPB page last reviewed in 2023. Check the specific contract.

These typical term and mileage figures are general guidance, not guaranteed 2026 offers. For additional consumer guidance on loan and lease costs, see the Federal Trade Commission’s guide to financing or leasing a car.

How to compare actual loan and lease offers

Use written quotes for the same vehicle and compare them over the period you expect to have the car. Include upfront, recurring, and end-of-contract costs, along with what you will own or owe at the end. A lower lease payment alone does not establish that leasing is cheaper overall.

  1. Get the written out-the-door purchase price. Ask for the total price before discussing financing. Review taxes, fees, and optional add-ons so you can compare dealers on the same basis.
  2. Choose one time horizon. Compare the expected cost of keeping a financed car for your chosen period with the lease payments and charges over that same period. For the loan, account for any remaining balance and the car’s value; for the lease, include likely return costs or the cost of using a purchase option.
  3. Review every lease input. Check the negotiated vehicle cost, residual value, rent charge or money factor, term, mileage allowance, amount due at signing, taxes, fees, wear standards, purchase option and its price, return or disposition charges, and early-termination terms. The CFPB identifies vehicle cost, residual, down payment, trade-in value, rental charge, mileage limit, and purchase option as factors to examine or negotiate.
  4. Compare the full loan cost. Review the annual percentage rate (APR), term, amount financed, down payment or trade-in, and total amount paid. The FTC recommends comparing financing from banks, credit unions, and finance companies, as well as considering dealer or manufacturer incentives. See its financing guidance.
  5. Use your real driving and ownership plans. Estimate annual mileage honestly and decide how long you expect to keep the car. High mileage may lead to lease charges or lower resale value, depending on the option you choose.
  6. Verify the offer that applies to you. Rates, incentives, residual values, taxes, and fees can vary by vehicle, buyer, contract, and location. There is no universal 2026 cost comparison that determines which option wins for every shopper.

When financing may fit better

  • You want to keep the car after the payments end.
  • You expect to drive more than the mileage allowance on a lease you are considering.
  • You value being able to sell or trade the vehicle, while accounting for any outstanding loan balance.

Ownership does not make mileage or condition irrelevant: both can affect the car’s eventual value, and loan interest adds to the cost of buying.

When leasing may fit better

  • You prefer a shorter vehicle cycle and expect to replace cars regularly.
  • You can stay within the mileage allowance and meet the contract’s return and wear requirements.
  • You are comfortable with the contract’s end-of-lease choices and understand that early termination may be costly.

A lease may have a lower monthly payment than financing the same car, but that payment does not by itself show that the lease has the lower total cost.

If you may want to buy the leased car

Check whether the lease includes a purchase option, when it can be exercised, and the stated purchase price and applicable fees. The residual value affects the lease payment and, when the contract includes an option, the purchase amount. Do not assume you can buy the car at lease end unless the agreement provides for it.

Federal lease-disclosure rules address matters including payment schedules, early termination, wear and use, maintenance responsibilities, and purchase options. The CFPB’s Regulation M resource, 12 CFR Part 1013, says it was most recently amended January 1, 2026. The CFPB cautions that its online resource is not a substitute for the official legal edition.
