India’s vehicle retail sales rose 20.77% year over year to 15.51 million units in the first half of FY2027, but dealers warned that new vehicle price increases could weaken the affordability gains they associate with GST changes. That is a risk dealers are watching—not evidence that the hikes have already caused a measurable sales slowdown. FADA’s October outlook remained optimistic, with 75.57% of surveyed dealers expecting growth.

Sales grew strongly in H1FY27, led by two-wheelers in volume

Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) figures reported by Mint show 15.51 million vehicle retail sales in April–September 2026, up 20.77% year over year. All three major segments cited in the report grew, though at different rates:

Vehicle segment H1FY27 retail sales Year-over-year change
Two-wheelers 11.04 million Up 20.43%
Passenger vehicles 2.54 million Up 24.48%
Commercial vehicles 585,217 Up 21.48%

Two-wheelers accounted for the largest reported unit total. Passenger vehicles had the fastest growth rate among the three categories shown. These are reported retail figures, not factory dispatches or a measure of how many individual buyers benefited from GST changes.

Which automakers raised prices in 2026?

Mint reported multiple price increases across carmakers and two-wheeler makers. The examples below are not an exhaustive price history, and the figures are not directly comparable: some are maximum rupee increases, some are percentages, and some apply only to selected models or a weighted average.

Automaker Reported 2026 changes
Maruti Suzuki India Three increases: up to ₹30,000 in June, up to ₹30,000 again in August, and up to ₹20,000 on selected models in September.
Hyundai Motor India About 0.6% in January, up to ₹12,800 from June, and up to 1% from September.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles A 0.5% weighted average increase for internal-combustion-engine (ICE) models in April; up to 1.5% across its portfolio in July; and up to ₹25,000 in September.
Mahindra & Mahindra Up to 2.5% in April and an average 2.7% increase for SUVs in July.
Hero MotoCorp A cumulative blended average increase of about 4.5% across its ICE portfolio since late February.
TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto Management said their companies had implemented price increases in FY27; specific amounts were not stated in Mint’s report.

Mint also reported a Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles executive’s assessment that manufacturer price increases since GST cuts had remained below 5% industry-wide. That was an attributed assessment, not a separately measured price index.

Why dealers see affordability as a risk

A lower tax burden can support demand by reducing the purchase price, but subsequent price increases can narrow the benefit a buyer sees at the showroom. The effect depends on the model, the size and timing of its price changes, any available consumer offer, and the buyer’s budget. The reported increases vary by company and do not establish how much of any GST-related price benefit remains for a particular vehicle.

FADA president Sai Giridhar said consumer offers could help cushion increases: “The silver lining out here is that, apart from the price hikes, there are consumer offer schemes. Because in the last year, when there were price reductions, the consumer offers were practically eroded,” he told Mint. In other words, discounts and promotions may affect the effective deal even when a vehicle’s listed price rises.

There are also cost pressures on manufacturers. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles managing director and chief executive Shailesh Chandra said, “The concern for us as a business is that it is not possible to pass on these increases to the market at the speed at which the prices (of commodities) have increased.” Mint reported his comments that only a limited portion of higher costs had been passed through and that further increases might follow, citing cost pressures associated with the West Asia war and supply-chain and logistics effects. These are the company’s explanations, not an independent estimate of the causes or consumer impact.

Price is not the only demand risk

FADA president Sai Giridhar said price increases and possible Reserve Bank of India rate hikes would shape the coming months. Higher borrowing costs can make financed purchases less affordable, while price increases raise the amount buyers may need to borrow or pay upfront. The report did not quantify the effect of either factor on sales.

In a 9 September note quoted by Mint, analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities also pointed to possible moderation in rural demand amid rainfall deficits in some states, alongside demand effects from price increases across vehicle categories. These are risks identified by analysts, not proof that rural demand or price changes had already reduced retail sales.

FADA expected October growth despite the warning

FADA’s 6 October 2026 note, as quoted by Mint, reported that 75.57% of surveyed dealers expected October growth, 19.46% expected a flat market, and 4.98% expected contraction. The share expecting growth was up from 67.09% heading into September, according to the same note.

Dealers expected festive demand to translate into deliveries around Navratri, scheduled for 11–20 October, and Dussehra. FADA said some buyers had held back during Pitru Paksha and expected a concentrated mid-month pickup, while the first 10 days could be quieter. That is a forecast about timing and dealer sentiment, not an October sales result.

FADA’s note described the challenge as “Protecting the GST gain is, to our mind, the key to converting the festive season into durable growth.” The report therefore presents two things at once: strong realized retail growth through September and dealer optimism for October, alongside concern that rising prices could make it harder to sustain demand.

What the figures can—and cannot—show

The sales numbers describe year-over-year growth, while the October percentages describe surveyed dealer expectations. Neither establishes that manufacturer price hikes caused a slowdown: the reports do not provide transaction-level prices, a consistent model-by-model price series, the underlying FADA dataset or survey methodology, or a quantified estimate isolating the effect of price changes on demand. The evidence supports a market risk and a dealer outlook, not a measured causal conclusion.
