Why Western Digital and Seagate Shares Rebounded After Toshiba’s HDD Expansion Report

Western Digital and Seagate rebounded after a selloff tied to Toshiba’s reported HDD expansion plan. Here’s why analysts saw limited near-term impact—and what could change over time.

Western Digital and Seagate shares recovered on October 5, 2026, after falling two trading days earlier when reports said Toshiba planned to expand hard-drive production. The rebound reflected analysts’ view that the plan would not quickly translate into a surge of HDD supply—not evidence that Toshiba had dropped its expansion or that the competitive risk had disappeared.

The reported gains varied by trading window: Yahoo Finance cited premarket increases of about 1.7% for Western Digital (Nasdaq: WDC) and 1.6% for Seagate (Nasdaq: STX); 24/7 Wall St. later described session gains of about 7% and 5%, respectively. These are separate October 5 snapshots, not a single end-of-day comparison.

What Toshiba reportedly plans—and when

October 2 coverage said Toshiba planned to invest about ¥60 billion (roughly US$380 million) in HDD facilities in the Philippines, with a goal of doubling production capacity by fiscal 2027. Tom’s Hardware reported that the plan included expanding nearline HDD assembly. Yahoo Finance’s October 5 account said Toshiba’s fiscal 2027 ends in March 2028. The investment and target are reported plans, not evidence that the additional capacity is already operating or that Toshiba has delivered twice as many drives.

Capacity is also not the same as market share. As reported in the October 5 account of Bernstein’s investor note, the market had conflated a target to nearly double Toshiba’s capacity by fiscal 2027 with an immediate doubling of Toshiba’s share of global HDD output. Actual deliveries would depend on timing, product mix, component availability and customer demand.

Why analysts saw less immediate supply risk

More capacity takes time—and depends on components

Investing.com reported that Citi analyst Asiya Merchant said Toshiba relies on outside suppliers for important components, including media and heads. Those suppliers would also need to expand capacity for Toshiba to double output. That makes the reported factory target different from an immediate increase in finished drives available to buyers.

The market was described as undersupplied

A separate market report attributed to Citi and Morgan Stanley the view that HDD supply remained behind demand, and that a possible Toshiba increase would not close the gap immediately. In that setting, the reported expansion could take time to affect the overall balance between supply and demand.

Some output may serve Japanese demand

Investing.com also reported LYNX Equity Strategies’ interpretation that Toshiba’s investment might be aimed more at meeting Japanese supply needs than aggressively capturing global share. This is an analyst interpretation reported by a secondary source, not Toshiba’s stated guidance.

Why Toshiba can still matter over the medium term

A slower near-term supply effect does not make the expansion irrelevant. Boursorama’s October 2 coverage summarized Rosenblatt’s concern that additional capacity could give customers more bargaining power. If Toshiba eventually delivers more drives, buyers may have another source to negotiate with, potentially affecting competition and pricing even without an immediate supply shock. This concern is secondary reporting; the original analyst note was not directly available.

The October 5 rebound was a market response to how investors and analysts interpreted the timing and likely supply impact. It does not establish that the plan has changed, resolve how much capacity Toshiba will add in practice, or determine what the effect on pricing will be.

Recent results provide context, not a share-price forecast

Company Reported fiscal 2026 results What the figures show
Western Digital For the fiscal quarter ended July 3, 2026, revenue was US$3.75 billion, up 44% year over year; GAAP gross margin was 54.1%, non-GAAP gross margin was 54.4%, and cash flow from operations was US$1.39 billion. Its Q1 FY2027 revenue outlook called for growth of 42% to 49% year over year. Western Digital reported strong recent revenue growth and margins, as well as a positive near-term revenue outlook. These are company-reported results and guidance, not a measure of future stock returns.
Seagate For the fiscal year ended July 3, 2026, Seagate reported Q4 revenue of US$3.6 billion and full-year revenue of US$12.2 billion. These company-reported figures establish recent revenue scale, but do not by themselves show how Toshiba’s expansion will affect Seagate.

Western Digital’s annual report identifies Seagate and Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage as HDD competitors and describes a high-capacity roadmap spanning ePMR, OptiNAND, UltraSMR, HAMR and triple-stage actuators. That is Western Digital’s company-reported description, not an independent ranking of the competitors’ technology positions. The available figures also do not establish which stock is cheaper or the better investment.

What to watch next

  • Toshiba’s delivered output: whether it meets the reported capacity target, and when additional drives reach customers.
  • Component supply: whether suppliers of media, heads and other inputs expand enough to support Toshiba’s plans.
  • Customer commitments and product mix: whether new capacity serves particular customers or markets, and how much is relevant to global nearline demand.
  • HDD supply and demand: whether the reported supply tightness persists or changes as production and demand evolve.
  • Company results: what Western Digital and Seagate report in later updates about demand, output and business conditions.

Those developments will show more about the competitive effect than a one-day share-price rebound. October 5 trading captures investors’ reaction to the reported plan and analysts’ timing arguments; it cannot settle the longer-term impact.
