It can be a costly trap if you mistake the required minimum for a sensible payoff plan. The minimum is the amount your issuer requires by the due date to keep the account current; paying only that amount can leave much of your balance unpaid, accruing interest for longer. It is not inherently a scam, and paying it is better than missing a payment—but, when your budget allows, paying more usually reduces interest and shortens repayment.
What does “minimum due” mean?
Your minimum due is the smallest payment your card issuer requires for a billing cycle. Pay at least that amount by the due date to avoid being late. A missed or late minimum can lead to a late fee and other account consequences; it may also put promotional terms at risk or affect your credit history. The exact consequences depend on your account and circumstances.
The minimum is a contractual floor, not a recommendation to carry the balance for as long as possible. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises paying more than the minimum when you can, to lower interest costs and pay the balance off faster. See its credit-card payment and interest guidance.
Why can minimum-only payments cost more?
Interest is charged on balances according to your card’s APR and terms. If your payment mostly covers interest and fees, only a small portion may reduce the principal. As the balance falls, the minimum may fall too, depending on the issuer’s formula, which can slow repayment further if you keep paying only that smaller amount.

For covered U.S. consumer credit-card accounts, Regulation Z generally requires periodic statements to include a minimum-payment warning and repayment estimates, subject to the rule’s conditions and exceptions. The warning says that paying only the minimum each period means you will pay more interest and take longer to repay. In some cases, if the minimum is less than the interest charged, the statement must warn that minimum-only payments will not pay off the balance even if you make no new charges. Read the CFPB’s periodic-statement rule for the precise scope.
The statement’s payoff estimate is not a promise about what your account will actually cost. Under the CFPB’s repayment-disclosure calculation assumptions, estimates use the current statement balance, applicable APRs for balance portions, and the card’s minimum-payment formula. They assume no new charges and minimum payments each month; promotional rates are handled through their expiration. New spending, a changed rate, or paying a different amount can change the result.

How is the minimum calculated?
There is no single formula used by every card. An issuer’s formula may combine a flat minimum, a percentage of the balance, interest, fees, or other terms. Your agreement and statement are the right places to check how your issuer calculates it, which APR applies to each balance, and when any promotional rate ends.
Do not apply one country’s rules to another. For example, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) notes that Quebec’s minimum-payment requirement is 5% as of August 1, 2025; that is a Quebec-specific rule, not a universal Canadian or U.S. standard. See the FCAC’s credit-card repayment guidance.
What difference can a larger payment make?
The following FCAC illustration compares payments on a $2,000 balance at 18% interest. It is an example, not a forecast for your account: your issuer’s formula, APRs, fees, balance mix, and new spending can produce different results.
| Monthly payment | Time to repay | Interest | Total paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| $60, the minimum-only scenario | 3 years, 11 months | $793 | $2,793 |
| $160, $100 above the $60 minimum | 1 year, 2 months | $231 | $2,231 |
These are FCAC’s worked figures, published in 2025, for its stated $2,000 balance and 18% interest example. The comparison shows how a fixed payment above the minimum can reduce both the repayment period and interest in that scenario; it does not establish what is typical for cardholders.

What should you do if you cannot pay the full balance?
- Pay at least the required minimum by the due date. If you cannot pay more, meeting the minimum helps you avoid being late.
- Check the statement before choosing an extra amount. Review the due date, minimum-payment warning and estimate, APRs for different balance types, and any promotional-rate expiration.
- Choose a larger payment you can sustain. If your budget permits, paying a fixed amount above the minimum can reduce the balance faster. The benefit depends on your account terms and payment history.
- Pause new charges when feasible. New purchases can increase what you owe and make the statement’s no-new-charges payoff estimate inapplicable.
- Get help if the minimum itself is unaffordable. Consider reputable credit-counseling or debt-management guidance. Applicable U.S. disclosures direct consumers to information about credit counseling; verify any organization’s reputation and terms before sharing financial information.
What if you can pay the statement balance in full?
Paying the full statement balance by its due date can help avoid interest on purchases when your account’s grace-period terms apply. Grace periods and exceptions are account-specific, so check your agreement and statement rather than assuming every balance receives the same treatment. The CFPB explains payment timing, APRs, and interest in its credit-card guidance.
