European shares edged higher in a morning snapshot on Monday, October 5, 2026, but French stocks moved lower. Reuters reported the STOXX 600 up 0.2% at 632.42 points at 0720 GMT, while France’s CAC 40 was down 0.8%. These were intraday readings—not closing results or evidence that the prior week’s decline had definitively ended.
What the morning market snapshot showed
Reuters described most major European indexes as flat to higher, with the pan-European STOXX 600 recovering some of the previous week’s losses. The benchmark was coming off its biggest weekly loss in a month, though the report did not state the size of that decline.
The figures below are from Reuters’ October 5 report republished by Investing.com. The STOXX 600 reading is explicitly timestamped at 0720 GMT; the report does not establish final closing levels for the day.
| Market or asset | Reported move | Context |
|---|---|---|
| STOXX 600 | Up 0.2% to 632.42 points at 0720 GMT | Morning snapshot; not a closing figure |
| France’s CAC 40 | Down 0.8% | Lagged the mostly flat-to-higher regional picture |
| Schneider Electric | Down 7.2% | Fell after announcing its $22.6 billion acquisition of US software company PTC, its largest deal to date |
| Mining stocks | Up 0.5% | Reuters linked gains in precious metals to softer-than-expected US jobs data and expectations that the Federal Reserve would leave rates unchanged that month |
Why French stocks lagged
Reuters tied pressure on French equities to concerns about the country’s fiscal outlook and Schneider Electric’s sharp decline. Schneider’s deal announcement was company-specific news within a weaker French market; the report does not establish that the acquisition alone explains the CAC 40’s fall.
Reuters also said the euro fell to a 17-month low as investors worried about France’s debt burden and political gridlock ahead of the next year’s presidential election. These were the market concerns described in that report on October 5, not a forecast or proof of a lasting cause-and-effect relationship.
Broader market concerns and other regional context
Rising bond yields were another concern cited by Reuters. The report said investors feared they could add to inflation worries and worsen fiscal outlooks. Spanish stocks were largely steady after Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called a snap election for November 29.

A small rise in the STOXX 600 after a weak week is a snapshot, not confirmation of a trend reversal.
