A Tale of Two Markets in 2026: Mega-Caps Lead as Yields Pressure Other Stocks

Mega-cap technology helped support the cap-weighted S&P 500 in September 2026, while its equal-weight counterpart fell more sharply. Earlier in the year, mid- and small-cap indexes had outperformed.

U.S. stocks did not move as one market in 2026: smaller-company shares outperformed in the first half, but September’s gains and losses were much more concentrated in mega-cap technology. Higher Treasury yields added pressure to rate-sensitive and cyclical stocks, according to VanEck, but the available evidence does not show that rates alone caused those shares to lag.

Why are mega-cap stocks rising while small-cap stocks lag?

The answer depends on the date window and which index you compare. A market-cap-weighted index gives its largest companies the greatest influence; an equal-weight index gives each constituent roughly the same influence. That means strong performance by a handful of mega-caps can buoy a headline index even when many other stocks are weaker.

The contrast was especially clear in September 2026. VanEck reported that the cap-weighted S&P 500 fell 0.35% for the month, while the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index fell 4.81%. Technology was the only sector to finish the month higher, and a narrow group of mega-cap technology shares helped support the cap-weighted benchmark. These are September returns, not a measure of performance through October 7. VanEck’s September market review

Was the market split true all year?

No. The first half of 2026 had broader participation and stronger returns from mid- and small-cap benchmarks than from the S&P 500. S&P Dow Jones Indices reported gains for the first six months of 10% for the S&P 500, 17% for the S&P MidCap 400 and 24% for the S&P SmallCap 600. In a separate August 11 analysis, the firm said more than 60% of stocks beat the S&P 500 in June and July. S&P Dow Jones Indices’ market analysis August 11, 2026 analysis

Those half-year and June–July figures describe a different period from September’s concentrated performance. They show why it is misleading to describe 2026 as one uninterrupted stretch in which mega-caps rose and smaller stocks lagged.

How can higher yields weigh on some stocks?

When Treasury yields rise, borrowing can become more expensive, and future earnings may look less valuable relative to the return available from bonds. That can put pressure on companies whose growth expectations depend heavily on future profits, or whose business models rely on borrowing. Cyclical companies can also be vulnerable if higher financing costs or weaker demand weigh on activity.

VanEck said higher rates and Treasury yields added pressure to rate-sensitive and cyclical areas in September. That is an interpretation of market conditions, not proof that yields alone explain any company’s share-price move. Sector composition, individual earnings and stock selection also influence index returns.

Why did the headline index hold up despite elevated yields?

Large technology companies and their influence on a cap-weighted index are part of the explanation. The Federal Reserve’s July report said the S&P 500 was up about 9% year to date at that report’s cutoff, while the S&P 500 Information Technology industry group was up about 16%. It attributed part of those gains to robust corporate earnings and enthusiasm around artificial intelligence. These are figures and observations from the July report, not current October returns. There is also a dated example of the two forces coexisting: the Associated Press reported a 10-year U.S. Treasury yield of 5.31% on October 5, 2026, while the S&P 500 was near its summer record. That single-day report illustrates that a strong headline index and elevated yields can occur at the same time; it does not establish how broad market performance looked on October 7. What should investors compare when reading market headlines?

  • Check the time period: A September monthly return cannot be compared directly with a first-half return without labeling the different windows.
  • Compare index weighting: A cap-weighted benchmark can reflect mega-cap leadership; an equal-weight version helps show whether the average constituent is keeping pace.
  • Look beyond the S&P 500: Mid- and small-cap benchmarks, sector performance and the share of stocks outperforming the index can reveal whether gains are broad or concentrated.
  • Treat rate explanations as one factor: Yields may pressure some businesses, but earnings, sector exposure and company-specific developments also matter.
  • Put an as-of date on current claims: The October 5 market report is not an October 7 breadth snapshot.
