Germany’s factory orders fell 10.6% month on month in August, but the decline was just 0.1% excluding large-scale orders. The UK construction PMI rose to 46.1 in September from 44.3, yet remained below the 50 mark that separates contraction from growth. Both releases were published on 6 October 2026, after the calendar preview appeared on 5 October.

What German factory orders showed

Destatis reported that real, price-adjusted German manufacturing orders fell 10.6% in August 2026 from July, on a seasonally and calendar-adjusted basis. The figures are provisional. On a calendar-adjusted year-on-year basis, orders were 2.7% higher.

Why the headline drop needs context

Orders excluding large-scale orders fell only 0.1% month on month. The steep headline decline followed an exceptional July surge in ship, rail-rolling-stock and aircraft orders. Destatis revised July’s monthly increase to 3.2%; its release gives the revised year-on-year increase as 14.0%. The August headline reversal therefore does not mean that ordinary orders fell by anything close to 10.6%.

Shorter and longer comparisons

Across the three months to August, orders rose 1.3% compared with the preceding three-month period; excluding large-scale orders, they fell 2.6%. Those comparisons tell a less uniformly weak story than the monthly headline, but they also show that the underlying order picture was not strong across every measure.

What the UK construction PMI showed

The September UK construction PMI was 46.1, up from 44.3 in August and above the 45.0 forecast listed by the Investing.com calendar. A reading below 50 indicates that activity is contracting; the rise therefore points to a slower contraction, not a return to growth.

Reuters reported that the new-orders reading fell to 45.9 from 47.7, a three-month low. It also reported that housebuilding remained the weakest segment, followed by civil engineering, while commercial construction recorded only a small decline. These order and sector details are Reuters’ account of the PMI, rather than figures independently confirmed here from an S&P Global release.

“Total new orders were relatively subdued in September as construction firms reported longer sales conversion cycles and clients deferred decision-making on major projects.”

How to read the two releases together

The German release is a factory-orders measure, while the UK figure is a construction activity survey; they cover different economies and parts of the economy and should not be treated as a direct comparison. In Germany, the outsized monthly move was heavily shaped by large orders and a strong, revised July. In the UK, the index improved from August but stayed in contraction territory, with reported new orders weakening. Neither release alone establishes a durable change in economic direction.
