A September 2026 report described a services collaboration connecting Ginkgo Datapoints’ biological data generation with Eli Lilly’s TuneLab AI/ML drug-discovery platform. The October article said Ginkgo shares doubled, but the available reporting does not provide the price dates needed to verify that return independently or show that the deal caused it.
What company is the article about?
It is Ginkgo Bioworks Holdings, Inc., which trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker DNA. The stock is not another company involved in a separate Lilly transaction.
Ginkgo’s 2025 annual report describes two operating businesses: cell engineering, which provides biological research and development services, and biosecurity, which provides services to identify, monitor, prevent, mitigate, and respond to biological threats. A July 2026 company announcement filed with the SEC describes autonomous laboratories and cloud-lab contract research services offered through its Datapoints and Solutions businesses. These capabilities help explain how Ginkgo could supply biological data to an AI-assisted discovery platform. Ginkgo’s 2025 annual report and its July 2026 SEC-filed announcement provide the company background.
What was the Eli Lilly deal?
The reported arrangement connects Ginkgo Datapoints’ biological data-generation services with Lilly TuneLab, Eli Lilly’s collaborative AI/ML drug-discovery platform. A September 16, 2026 report said those services were being integrated with TuneLab. That is best described as a commercial services collaboration: the available account does not characterize it as an acquisition or an equity investment. The September report on the TuneLab collaboration describes the service relationship.

The reported details do not establish the agreement’s financial terms, exclusivity, research targets, milestones, or expected revenue contribution. They also do not show that the collaboration has produced a drug candidate or clinical result. The distinction matters: a connection between data-generation services and a discovery platform is not itself evidence of a validated medicine or a material contribution to Ginkgo’s sales.
Did Ginkgo shares really double—and did the deal cause it?
An October 5, 2026 Motley Fool article identified Ginkgo and reported that its shares had doubled after the Lilly announcement. The article’s wording is the available support for that performance claim, but the cited coverage does not give the dated share prices or measurement window needed to reproduce the calculation. It should therefore be read as an attributed report, not as a precisely verified return over a defined period. The October 5 article makes the claim.

The timing of a stock move and an announcement does not establish that the announcement caused the move. The collaboration may have drawn investor attention, but the available reporting does not isolate its effect from other influences on the share price. Investors assessing the move should check the relevant trading dates and price series rather than assume the entire gain reflects the deal.
What do Ginkgo’s financials say about the risk?
Ginkgo’s 2025 Form 10-K reported meaningful service revenue, alongside a substantial net loss. The figures below are historical results for the year ended December 31, 2025, not current October 2026 balances.

| 2025 filing item | Reported amount |
|---|---|
| Cell engineering revenue | $132.7 million |
| Biosecurity revenue | $37.4 million |
| Net loss | $312.763 million |
| Cash and cash equivalents at December 31, 2025 | $167.2 million |
| Marketable securities at December 31, 2025 | $255.4 million |
The same filing says cell engineering revenue fell from $174.0 million in 2024 to $132.7 million in 2025, while biosecurity revenue fell from $53.1 million to $37.4 million. It attributes the declines to contract-specific and government-program factors. These results are reported in Ginkgo’s 2025 Form 10-K.
For a personal-finance reader, the main implication is that a headline-making partnership and a rising share price should not be confused with proven profitability. A large net loss and declining year-over-year revenue in both reported businesses make future execution and the terms of any new work important considerations.

The announcement establishes a service role, but it does not answer several questions needed to judge the deal’s financial significance. If further disclosures emerge, focus on whether they clarify:
- What Ginkgo supplies: the specific biological data-generation services, their scope, and how they fit into TuneLab.
- Access and exclusivity: whether the platform or services are shared, open, or exclusive to particular parties or research programs.
- Economics: fees, milestones, revenue-recognition details, and whether the relationship is expected to contribute meaningfully to Ginkgo’s results.
- Scientific progress: whether activity advances beyond data generation into validated preclinical findings or clinical development.
- Delivery capacity: whether Ginkgo’s existing business and financial resources can support the work sustainably.
Ginkgo has also pursued partnerships outside drug discovery. For example, Solvay announced a collaboration focused initially on sustainable biopolymers and said it would acquire a Ginkgo laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. That is separate from the Lilly arrangement and does not establish anything about TuneLab’s terms or performance. Solvay’s announcement describes that distinct collaboration.
