A father calling The Ramsey Show asked whether making his college freshman an authorized user on his credit card would help build the student’s credit—or teach him a risky habit. He said the card was meant for modest campus living expenses and that his son already had a debit card. The answer is not that every student needs a credit card, or that authorized-user status will reliably raise a score: cash and debit generally do not build a reported repayment history, while a card helps only if the issuer reports the activity and the account is managed responsibly.
What happened on the call
The caller, Kevin of Mobile, Alabama, described adding his son, a college freshman, as an authorized user on a parent’s credit card. He asked whether he was “doing him a disservice teaching him to use a credit card to build credit” and whether “building a credit file [is] actually necessary to move forward in life.”
Kevin said he might “encourage him to shred that card and just use cash” if building credit was unnecessary and not worth the risk. That was Kevin’s possible course of action, not a report that the card was shredded or a universal recommendation from the hosts. The discussion also turned to budgeting and living within one’s means. The Ramsey Show episode page provides the call context.
Can a student use cash or debit instead?
Yes. A student can pay campus expenses with cash or a debit card without taking on credit-card borrowing. But those payments generally do not show that the student repaid borrowed money, so they typically do not create the repayment history used to build a credit file. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains that reported, on-time use of credit products can help establish credit history; debit and cash are not substitutes for that reported borrowing history. See the CFPB’s guide to starting or rebuilding credit history, last reviewed September 13, 2024.

Whether a credit file is necessary depends on what the student will need to do. Credit history can matter when applying for credit, but the available guidance does not establish that every person must borrow or carry a credit card to move forward in life. A family can choose not to use a card for campus spending; it should simply understand that cash and debit spending usually will not build reported repayment history.
What authorized-user status can—and cannot—do
An authorized user may be able to make purchases on the primary cardholder’s account, but that status does not guarantee a credit-building benefit. Issuers differ in whether they report authorized-user activity to the credit bureaus. Before relying on a parent’s account to help the student build credit, ask the issuer whether it reports authorized users’ account activity and to which bureaus. The CFPB’s credit-report and score key terms explain the authorized-user distinction and the reporting caveat.

| Option | Can activity build reported history? | Who is responsible for payment? | Costs and risks to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash or debit for campus spending | Generally no reported repayment history from those transactions, according to the CFPB’s credit-history guide. | The student uses available funds rather than borrowing on a credit account. | Does not provide a credit-borrowing track record; spending still needs to fit the student’s budget. |
| Parent’s card with student as authorized user | Possibly, but only if the issuer reports authorized-user activity; reporting differs by issuer, according to the CFPB’s key terms guide. | The parent, as primary account holder, remains responsible for charges. | Check issuer reporting, spending limits, fees and interest. Excessive charges or missed payments can harm the parent’s credit. |
| Student’s own credit card | Credit-card activity can help establish history when reported and paid on time, according to the CFPB’s credit-history guide. | The student is responsible for the student’s account. | Check reporting, fees, interest, repayment capacity and the consequences of a high balance or missed payment. |
| Secured card or credit-builder loan | The CFPB identifies these as possible credit-building tools; confirm that the provider reports the relevant activity. | Depends on the account and its terms; the borrower must meet the payment obligation. | Review fees, interest, terms and reporting practices before committing. The CFPB discusses these options in its credit-history guide. |
A cautious way to decide as a family
- Ask what the goal is. If the immediate need is only to pay for ordinary campus expenses, a credit card is not required for the transaction itself. If the goal is to establish credit history, focus on whether the activity will be reported.
- Verify reporting directly with the issuer or provider. Ask whether authorized-user activity is reported, and whether a separate card or loan reports the borrower’s payments. Do not assume the account will build a file just because it is used.
- Agree on responsibility and limits. For an authorized-user arrangement, the parent remains liable for account charges. Set clear spending boundaries and decide how purchases will be monitored and repaid.
- Check the full cost and repayment plan. Compare fees, interest, terms and the student’s ability to pay on time. A credit-building account is not useful if its obligations exceed the student’s budget.
- Choose the option the student can manage consistently. If borrowing would encourage overspending or repayment is uncertain, cash or debit may better fit current spending needs. If the family chooses a credit product, reported activity and dependable on-time repayment are central to its potential credit-building value.
