First locate the original record and transaction ID, then verify the transaction on the correct network. That separates a display or import problem from an unprocessed exchange withdrawal or a completed transfer to the wrong address. Keep the evidence and original exports as you reconcile records; correcting a report cannot reverse an on-chain transfer.
Start with the original transaction record
Look for the transaction where it originated, not only in the wallet or tax software that appears incomplete. For an exchange transaction, check withdrawal details, order and activity history, deposits, and statements. Coinbase Exchange documents routes for orders, deposits, withdrawals, balances, and wallet statements in its accounting and tax reports guidance. Also check confirmation emails, bank statements, wallet activity, and any CSV or tax report you already downloaded.
For a custodial withdrawal, note the exchange’s status and whether it has issued a transaction ID. An exchange may show a requested withdrawal before it has processed it. If there is no transaction ID and the transaction cannot be found on the relevant blockchain explorer, check the withdrawal status with the sending platform; an unprocessed withdrawal will not yet have an on-chain record.
Record the details you can establish: asset, amount, date and time, sending and receiving addresses, network, fees, transaction ID, and source platform. Keep a copy of the original record rather than overwriting it while investigating.

Verify the transaction on the correct network
Search the transaction ID on a blockchain explorer that supports the network actually used. A transaction ID from one network cannot reliably establish the status of a transfer on another. Confirm that the explorer result matches the asset and amount, and check its status, timestamp, and destination address.
- Confirmed and sent to the expected address: The blockchain record exists even if a wallet or recipient interface does not display it.
- Pending or unconfirmed: Use the explorer’s status and the sending platform’s information to determine whether it is still processing. Do not treat it as a completed receipt.
- No result: Recheck the network and transaction ID. If the sender is an exchange, check whether it has actually processed the withdrawal and contact its support if its status is unclear.
- Confirmed but sent elsewhere: The record is real, but the destination differs from the one intended. That is a transfer-recovery problem, not a missing-history problem.
Exodus recommends checking a transaction on an explorer, confirming the network and destination, and contacting the relevant platform if a confirmed transaction is not reflected there. See its transaction ID and troubleshooting guidance.

Rule out a wallet display or network mismatch
If the explorer confirms the transaction to the intended address, check that the receiving wallet is displaying the same network and the relevant asset or token. An asset may exist on another network supported by the wallet, and a wallet can fail to display activity until its network data is refreshed. Use the wallet’s refresh or sync function, then check its asset and network settings. Do not infer that funds are lost solely because one wallet screen is empty.
If the chain record is confirmed and the destination is correct but an exchange or other receiving service does not credit it, give that service the transaction ID and ask it to investigate. The service may need to match the transfer to your account; a wallet refresh cannot make a recipient platform process a deposit.

Rebuild incomplete history from all relevant sources
A single exchange report may not include activity from another exchange, a self-custody wallet, or a separate product. Coinbase Taxes, for example, says its Coinbase.com activity scope excludes Coinbase Wallet and Coinbase Pro activity. Check the current Coinbase Taxes report information for the product and activity coverage that applies to your account.
Download the available history from each exchange, wallet, and relevant account, covering the full period you need. Compare exchange trades and transfers with the corresponding on-chain entries. A blockchain explorer can confirm public-chain activity, but it does not by itself provide a complete record of off-chain exchange trades or account activity.

If you use an automated transaction-history or tax import, check which exchanges, blockchains, and transaction types its integration actually covers. Blockpit’s Missing History guidance notes that coverage depends on the connected services. A successful connection is not proof that every transaction was imported.

Classify the discrepancy before editing anything. Common causes include a missing entry, a duplicate, an omitted account, a date or time-zone mismatch, or an incorrect transaction classification. Match the disputed entry against source records and, where relevant, the blockchain transaction. Do not add or reclassify an entry merely to make balances line up if the supporting evidence is unclear.

- Save the original export or report and note the account, product, and date range it covers.
- Compare it with other source histories and the relevant on-chain records; identify the specific entry or gap.
- Check identifiers, amount, asset, network, timestamp, fees, and addresses before deciding whether an entry is missing or duplicated.
- Make a manual correction only when a source record supports it. Keep the transaction ID and a note explaining the change alongside the original files.
- If the source history contains a transaction that an integration missed, provide the service with a marked example and supporting documentation. Blockpit describes both manual addition and support escalation in its missing-history guidance.
Keep corrections distinguishable from original records. This makes it possible to explain later which facts came from an exchange, wallet, or public ledger and which entries were added to repair an incomplete import.
Preserve records and check local requirements
Keep original exports, confirmations, statements, transaction IDs, wallet addresses, and notes about corrections. Tax recordkeeping rules differ by jurisdiction. HMRC’s Cryptoassets Manual says, “The onus is therefore on the individual to keep their own records for each cryptoasset transaction.” Its CRYPTO10400 guidance identifies records including cryptoasset type, transaction date, whether the transaction was a buy or sell, units, sterling value at the transaction date, cumulative units held, bank statements, and wallet addresses.
New Zealand Inland Revenue also lists transaction and valuation records and recommends regular downloads of exchange history. Its cryptoasset recordkeeping guidance says records should be retained for at least seven years. That is New Zealand guidance, not a universal retention period. Check the rules that apply where you file taxes, including any local requirements for valuation and record retention.
Know when a record problem is actually a transfer problem
Syncing a wallet, obtaining an exchange export, or correcting an import can repair an incomplete display or record. It cannot undo a completed transfer to the wrong address. Ethereum.org states that an Ethereum transaction is irreversible. If the address belongs to a known person or a custodial service, contact that recipient or service, but do not assume it can return the funds.
Access to a self-custody wallet depends on the required recovery phrase or private keys. Ethereum.org warns that without them, funds cannot be recovered, and that legitimate services do not ask you to share a seed phrase. Never give a recovery phrase or private key to a person claiming they can retrieve a transfer. See the relevant Ethereum.org wallet and recovery guidance.
